Blues guitarist Jimmy King, one of the city's premier modern blues players,
died Friday after his brother found him unconscious at his Whitehaven home.
King, whose real name was Manuel Gales, died at Methodist Healthcare-South
about 3 p.m. He was 37.
His body was taken to the Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office to determine
the exact cause of death.
Gales had been talking to his girlfriend on a cell phone from his house when
something went wrong, according to a police report.
She called his brother, Daniel Gales, who went to the house and called an
ambulance after he found the musician lying across his bed near the cell phone,
not breathing.
The police report said Gales arrived at the hospital in "full arrest."
Manuel Gales was part of a talented musical family - one of three brothers who
played guitar left-handed and upside-down.
While brothers Eric and Eugene veered toward a hard rock-funk sound, Manuel
Gales was drawn to a sound that owed more to the blues.
His guitar licks and his stage name were inspired by two other left-handed
guitar players - blues legend Albert King and rocker Jimi Hendrix.

how sad. i feel for eric and eugene. i lost my uncle earier this year,
and this kind of thing make you think about your own mortality.

i remember, after seeing his brother eric gales play at b.b. king's
club last year, frequently checking the web under "beal street". and,
i would see little jimmy king's name quite often, always playing on
beal street.

we need to find some bootlegs of ljk! i went to a local record store,
and he never officially released anything (or at least anything still
in print). the blues definately lost a legend!
