I was in my local library today and pulled out the issue of People magazine
from January 1984 with the cover story on Dennis' death. I found the article
very fascinating especially the part about how the Wilsons and the Loves fought
over how to conduct his funeral. But here's something I never knew: Murray
Wilson lost an eye when he was young. I forget exactly how they said it
happened, but it's a strange coincidence in that Brian lost his hearing in one
ear when he too was young (allegedly because of one of Murray's beatings).
I've read quite a few things of Murray Wilson (mostly negative) and I've
never seen a reference to this.

Peter, you should read Heroes and Villains book by Steven Gaines.
He writes that Murry lost his eye where he worked (contrutruction site, or
something).
Anyways the book is great in my opinion, go read it :)

OK...I'm thinking "rubber factory" as the eye-loss site, and, when you lose
your hearing because someone smacks you over the head w/ a 2x4 when you're
a kid, it's not a coincidence.

Now...if you want to see an animated rendering of Murray getting so mad
that steam comes out his ears and his glass eye pops out, go to
http://www.icebox.com, and find the link for "Rock and Roll Dad" and watch
all 4 - 3 minute episodes.

Really?? Wow, that's interesting...actually, it's a well-known fact
about Murry. Apparently he had two glass eyes -- one normal and one
bloodshot for when he drank...

Didn't Murry put Dennis under a scalding hot shower for bringing his
bloodshot eye to school to show off?

In addition to making Brian look at the scarred socket to freak him
out, he'd also rub the glass eye against Brian's cheek to make it even
more gruesome. And this even happened after Brian was a young adult
according to "WIBN."

Amazing that someone would know that Murry was an abusive dad and never
knew he had a glass eye. It looms so large in his legend.

Yeh, you're right! Steven Gaines writes about that, Murry tormenting the
boys with his glass eye during dinner. Poor boys!! hehe

Anyways, yeh Murry or Murray, whats the big deal.
It's a simple mistake.

Agreed...since the name that sounds like "Murry" is usually spelled
"Murray"...

I'm eventually going to put a list of commonly misspelled Beach Boys
names on my Web site [under "List of Beach Boys Lists"]...whom do we
have so far???

Murry Wilson
Audree Wilson
Jack Rieley
Ricky Fataar [I've seen it "Rikki" on official releases, but on most
Beach Boys things he's on it's spelled "Ricky," and that's how he
autographed my "Shangri-La" E.P.]

I know I've thought of others, but my memory fails me right now...

If you count typos, you could add *Brain* Wilson. I have also seen Van Dyke
Parks' name misspelled, esp. on bootlegs made in Europe.

Or Brad Eliot ;-)

Jeff (who knows it's "Elliott")

Or the classic misspelling of Mark Linett, which I've probably just spelt
completely wrong as I've mentioned it... misspelled so often that apparently
he's considered changing the spelling of his name (jokingly, I assume).

You spelled his name correctly. I know, because I once mispelled it in a
message to him, and I've felt embarrased ever since...
