corrections should be emailed to ani...@rmta.org

1. Who is Ani Difranco?

Ani Difranco has been described as a 'punk-folk' singer. Through her
intense touring schedule, she has built up a huge
following, playing to over 6,000 fans in September, 1997. Although
initially obscure, her popularity has only grown with each
album she has released.

2. How many albums does Ani have?

There are 13 records released on the Righteous Babe Records Label.

Ani Difranco (the first album)
Not So Soft
Imperfectly
Puddle Dive
Like I Said (songs 1990-1991)
Out of Range
Not A Pretty Girl
Dilate
The Past Didn't Go Anywhere (Utah Phillips and Ani Difranco)
More Joy Less Shame (EP)
Living In Clip
Little Plastic Castle
Up, Up, Up, Up,
Up, Up

3. What is Righteous Babe (aka RBR)?

RBR is Ani's own independent record label which she formed in 1990.
Initially, the label was run out of Ani's manager's living
room but is now the full time employer of 8 employees (including Elizabeth
Difranco, Ani's mother). RBR can be contacted by
calling (but only call if you REALLY have to, don't just call to talk to
Ani's mom, she wouldn't appreciate it) 1-800-On-Her-Own
or by snail mail at:

righteous babe records inc.
p.o. box 95 ellicott station
buffalo, ny 104205-0095

4. Which album should I buy first?

Of Ani's 12 albums, it is just a matter of taste which one you want to buy
first. The first few albums are mostly lyrical and
guitar. Not A Pretty Girl begins Ani's punk-ish and experimental phase.
Dilate is a controversial album among Ani fans, but is
an experimental album about her love affair with "goat boy". Living In
Clip is a live album, compiled during her 1995-1996
tour. Little Plastic Castle is her newest foray into studio work.

5. Where can I get Ani's albums?

Ani's albums are available at most big music stores and at little
independent stores all over the country. Or, you can call RBR
in the US at 1-800-ON-HER-OWN. You can also buy her albums online at
places like www.cdnow.com or
www.cduniverse.com or www.soundstone.com, these compan ies deliver all
over the world!

In Europe, they're rereleased on the label Cooking Vinyl, or you might
find imports. (See the answer to question 20 for
catalog numbers) The Cooking Vinyl rereleases contain bonus cd's with
extra tracks. However, the bonus tracks are not
different from the tracks on earlier albums--so don't buy a cooking vinyl
release if you alr eady have the RBR release.

Cooking Vinyl's address is

Cooking Vinyl,
PO Box 1845
London W10 4BT
England

They had a website at:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/cookingvinyl but it seems to be
down right now.

6. What movie soundtracks feature Ani's songs?

Ani is on the soundtrack to the film My Best Friend's Wedding. with a
cover of a tune called "Wishin' and Hopin'" ( originally a
hit for Dusty Springfield ). It's used in the opening sequence. She's also
on the soundtrack to All Over Me , with the track
"Shy". In addition, she can be found on the soundtrack to She's the One.
Joyful Girl (Peace and Love Mix) can be found on the
sountrack to "The Jackal." Million you Never Made is on the soundtrack to
"Hanging Garden."

6.5. What else has Ani been involved with ?

Ani's work can also be found on some musical compilations such as:
"Women's Work," "Folks Live," "Gap Grooves,"
"Amazing Grace," "Live from 6A--Conan O'Brien" and "Live from Mountain
Stage, Vol. 8." Ani also contributed to Janis Ian's
album "Hunger," sings on Pamela Means' album "Bone Spurs," and produced
Dan Bern's album "Fifty Eggs." She's both
found on and producing a Woodie Guthrie tribute album to be released from
RBR later this summer and a Peter Seeger
tribute album out now from Appleseed Records covering "My Name is Lisa
Kalvelage" and contributing to the liner notes.

7. Where can I find Ani stuff on the Internet?

You could look for the Righteous Babe Records web site, which is
apparently 'coming soon', at
http://www.righteous-babe-records.com .

Although there are lots of Ani pages out there, a few of the most useful
are:

Tour itinerary at Fleming/Tamulevich site:
http://www.flemtam.com/ad-itin.html
Megazone's Ani Page (home of the rbr lists):
http://world.std.com/~megazone/Ani/anihome.html
Marg's Ani Page (the first):
http://www.cc.columbia.edu/~marg/ani/
Alan Storm's Page: http://www.isc.rit.edu/~aps0104/ani/
Miriam's Ani Page: http://www.columbia.edu/~mrp29/music.html
The Ani Difranco Webring:
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/2625/ring.html
Complete Lyrics (released and unreleased):

Guitar tab information:
Leigh Marble's Ani Tabs: http://www.netspace.org/~leigh/ani/
Nathan's European Tab Mirror:
http://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~neg/ani/

plus, of course, r.m.a.a-d and the rbr mailing lists

8. What's rmta ?

rmta is rec.music.tori-amos. The two people who proposed and wrote the
charter for this newsgroup are rmta-er's, and a lot
of people on rmta like ani, so there'll probably be quite a few of us
about.

9. Who is Napoleon about ?

Nobody really knows who Napoleon is about ( except possibly Ani.) I think
that it's about the music industry in general.

10. Who is Ani's booking agent ?

Ani's booking agents are Fleming Tamulevich & Associates. You can contact
them at:

Fleming Tamulevich and Associates
733-735 N.Main St.
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Phone: 313-995-9066
Fax: 313-662-6502
E-Mail: f...@pobox.com

They can be found on the web at http://www.flemtam.com.

11. Does Ani write her own songs?

Yes.

12. Who is "Goat Boy"?

Goat Boy is Ani's q sound man. He can be seen at
all of her shows, he has a long reddish ponytail
and a goatee. They married in the end of May, 1998.
bi.

13. Who is Alana Davis? (or, Why do I keep hearing 32 flavors on the
radio?)

Alana Davis is an artist on Elektra Records who did a cover of Ani's 32
Flavors which can be found on Not a Pretty Girl. Alana
Davis DID get Ani's permission to cover the song. She DID omit a few
verses. She hadn't even heard Ani's music before she
covered it.Discuss this topic at your own risk, it can be very
controversial.

14. Where can I find tour dates and ticket information?

The Fleming Tamulevitch website has the most up-to-date information. The
URL is http://www.flemtam.com/ad-itin.html.

15. How can I get live Ani tapes?

The most comprehensive place to go is the Ani Live Connection, the URL is:
http://users.lanminds.com/~ksimon/aniboot.html. Keep in mind that trading
bootlegs for profit is ille gal. So don't do it.
Usually trading for blanks and return postage is an acceptable alternative
to the tapeless.

16. Does Ani have any videos?

There are two that have been seen on MTV, one is for In or Out and the
other for Joyful Girl. A video for Shy from NAPG did
exist at one point, but was never played on MTV and there are rumors that
a Blood in the Boardroom video existed as well,
but it has never been seen.

17. What's the deal with the bootleg CD (aka Women in (e)motion) ?

It was recorded at Schauburg, Bremen, Germany on 8.7.94 by Radio Bremen
Jazzredaktion. The catalogue number is T&M
105. It's Ani and Andy, and the track listing is

* buildings & bridges
* letter to a john
* face up and sing
* out of range
* not so soft
* lullaby (sic - actually cradle and all)
* asking too much
* sorry i am
* in or out
* if he tries anything
* blood in the boardroom

you can get it quite easily in the UK for about 14 to 15 GBP, and in the
US for about $20 to $25. OR, you can buy it online at
www.cdnow.com or http://www.rahul.net/hrmusic/discos/adidisc.html.

18. Who is the mysterious sunglasses man in Loom?

Greg Brown is another musician. He & Ani seem to have a mutual respect for
each others work, and have a running
conversation going back and forth between them in their songs. It started
with Ani writing this bouquet to Greg. He
responded with Vivid, and the latest song in this so far trilogy is loom,
off of Little Plastic Castle. (this answer was blatantly
cut and pasted from Alan Storm's page)

19. How old is Ani?

Her birthday is September 20, 1970.

error.

22. What's the deal with the Diva CD?

The UK magazine Diva featured a CD with 6 Ani tracks as a free gift on

actually, posting the response letter written by suzanne vega regarding
that rumour would be much more appropriate. she adamantly denies the
song being written about her....but then again, wouldn't you? i've also
heard that the song was written about lisa loeb, how she was a classy
little folk-ditty-singer, and then rode the "stay" fame to typical
celebrity. the song could be applied to a lot of different people, but
what does it matter? who cares.
