section A \): Introduction/Thanks
a-1: Introduction
First off, i'd like to let it be known that much of the
information contained
within the faq is based on what has been said in various
interviews and such.
It is well known that many of the statements made to the media by
Mr. James is
pure BS. Please do not flame me saying "he was lying when he
said "X"
in the interview from "X" mag." because it is virtually
impossible for
anyone to filter through the fact and fiction. For the majority
of
the time I will take what he says in interviews for face value.
a-2: thanks
thanks to everyone at the IDM list and several people who flamed
me on how
much my preview of the FAQ sucked. Also specific thanks to the

For making kick ass music and doing stuff
(__,-, \

(/ \\
section B \): General Information
b-1: What does aphex twin mean?
Most likely the "aphex" part is named from Aphex Inc.,
manufacturer of
various musical equipment. On more recent releases he has a
copyright notice
about "aphex". The "twin" most likely is a referene to his
collaberation
with Tom Middleton (of Global Communication) on the second half of
Analouge
Bubblebath One, who has a birthday on the same date as Mr. James.
Or the
twin could be a reference to the fact that Aphex had an older
brother, named Richard
who died as a child. Richard (the Aphex Richard) was named after
the original
"Richard D. James" Or it could just be Aphex screwing with our
heads?
b-2: What names has this guy released songs under?
MANY: Aphex Twin, AFX, Polygon Window, Caustic Window, Dice Man,
Powerpill, GAK, Q-Chastic, Blue Calx, Soit-PP and several many of
us
don't know about.:-)
b-2b: What's the difference between the two "diceman"s?
Well, RDJ released one track as Diceman on Warp's Artificial
Intelligence comp. then he was informed that there was another Diceman
and he forfited
the name. AI is the only release (that I know of) with RDJ as
"The Diceman"
all other Diceman releases are not Richard.
b-3: Who Is Richard D. James?
Well, I really couldn't say, since I don't know him personally but
here's a quick bit of info:
Richard D. James (b: Augest 13, 1971 Cornwall England D: not yet!)
:-)
b-4: Is Richard James really the only man in aphex twin?
Yes, he performs completely as a one man operation on most of his
albums, usually out of his home studio. But there have been
instances where he
has worked with other musicians, such as Mike Paradinas, of
mu-Ziq. But this
(excluding the collaboration with Tom Middleton on AB1)work is
released under
different names.

b-6: Where Does He Get those crazy titles?
In the Aphex Twin Word Play Essay Kent Williams narrowed it down
to 6
catagories:
1. Obsession with 'Ph' (Isoprophlex(sp) Phlange Face(sp) Tamphex,
Aphex)
2. Chemical names (Isoprophlex, Salbutamol), though usually
garbled.
3. Brand names (Aphex, Tamphex, Ventolin, Alberto Balsam)
4. Anagrams (more recent titles)
5. Silly wordplay (Analogue Bubblebath)
6. Total Head Scratchers (Icct Hedral)
b-7: What Is his live show like?
His live show either consists of just him sitting at a computer with
an effects box or
something totally different (see section c-2). With the vast amount
of material he
has recorded each set is different
"For each set, I usually have about 35 or 40 tracks," he says. "It could
be
a minimum of about 25, or a maximum of about 45. It's just like having a
small box of records where you can structure every record and determine
its speed in the mix."
b-8a: What equimpment does Aphex Twin use?
Now a days the majority of his "equipment" is just a computer. Or
so he says.
He claims to have programmed a sequencer, also. He used to use
homemade and
modifed equipment.
b-8b: How does he make/modify equipment?
He says that he usually takes the outsides of an insturment and
just
guts out the entire innards. He claims he built his first sampler
when he was 14. :-)
b-9a: What is Aphex's connection to Mu-Ziq?
Mu-Ziq has released music on Rephlex records (see section a-6).
mu-Ziq remixed "on". Mike Paradinis, the master mind behind mu-ziq
worked
with Mr. James on the release "expert knob twidlers" under the
name of
Mike & Rich
b-9b: What is Aphex's connection to Luke Vibert aka Plug aka Wagonchrist?
Vibret and James have been long time friends. Luke Vibert remixed
Ventolin,
on the single of the same name. Aphex remixed "Redone" on the
redone
ep. Richard says that he and Vibert have worked together on a few
tracks that
are yet unreleased.
b-10a: Where can I Find RDJ stuff on the World Wide Web?

b-10b: Where can I find RDJ stuff on usenet?
the only ng's right now are rec.music.ambient However, there is a
propsed alt.music.richard_d_james.
b-10c: Where can I find RDJ stuff through mailing lists?
THE IDM (intelligent dance music) LIST!! (mail to:
Majo...@hyperreal.com with subscribe: IDM in the subject.)
b-11: Is it true that James will be getting out of the music biz forever?
Yes and no. On many accounts he has said that he will only release
one or two
more records, until his contract runs out. But I doubt this means
he will stop
making music, just that he's going to keep it to himself. He
always said that he
was just doing the "record thing" so he could afford to make more
music for himself
b-12: I like Aphex Twin. What other music would I like?
Well, it all depends on your musical tastes. Off the top of my
head:
Mu-Ziq, Squarepusher, Autechre, Wagon Christ, Brian Eno.
But that's just my opinion

Section C \): Rumors and Odd Tales
c-1: Does Mr. James really drive a tank?
Yes, it's a Daimler Ferret Mark 3:
From Details, July 1995:
"One great thing about the decline of the British Empire has been
the steady trickle
of old war toys that wash up on English shores. I bought my Daimler
Ferret Mark 3 ank
in a deal that was a bit shady really, kind of an exchange. I paid
some money and swaped some,
um, things with this guy I knew in Cornwall. he gave me his tank
(well technically
it's an armored scout car). He'd gotten it from some guy who used
to rent it out
to movies. Before that the Ferret was, I am told, used on missions
in faraway places
like India, Indonesia, Northern Ineland, and South Africa. Crowd
"control".
My tank was made for the Britisharmy right after World War II. It's
a big toy - larger
than an ice cream truck, heaver than 9,500 pounds when
combat-ready, with big
fat wheels. And a gun. I like the ferret not for its place in
history, but for
the place it occupies in my parents' backyard (I moved from
Cornwall to London
and haven't sent for it yet). When I lived in Cornwall, I'd drive
it around town.
It's easy to get carried away when you're raving down the
thoroughfare in a steel-hulled
tank. You become the colossus of roads. You don't even have to
signal - people simply
get right out of your way."
c-2: What's all this about sandpaper on turnables?
James, from NME interview:
"Er, yeah. It's not like a new set or anything, it was just a favour
for a
club. I thought it would be a bit conventional to just play records so
I did
that instead. Pointless? Well, it probably would've been if it was my
stylus but
they paid for it. I didn't lose anything and I got paid to do it,
which sounds
like a good deal to me. I really liked it actually, it sounds really
mental.
I did it again in New York and there were people there who danced to
it. I think
they thought it was death metal or something. I suppose people might
feel a
bit ripped off if they paid to see me. Do I care? Erm, I don't know
really. Most
people seem to be into it, which is a bit disappointing really. I'd
rather do
it down Ritzy's on a Friday night and get people really mad."
c-3: Does he really go for days without sleep?
He claims that the answer is yes:
"I go through phases. Sometimes I sleep, sometimes I don't. For a
while I
only ever got about three hours of sleep a week. Then that fizzled
out to
about two hours a night and now I'm pretty normal, I think. It's
really difficult
to go a week without sleep. I need to be doing the music 'cos
that's the only
thing that keeps me awake. If you go over four days, it gets really
trippy and
you start losing it. You can't think properly. But you sort of get
through that
and then it's just like being stoned. It's alright once you get
used to it.
If people don't believe me... sorted."
c-4: What's this tire commercial all about?
James did the music for the perrelli (sp?) tire commercial. You
know, the
one where Carl Lewis runs through the city with tires for feet.
c-5: Is The Caustic Window Album Really going to have all cuss words for
titles?
no, but here's that rumored track list just for fun:
Caustic Window 'The Caustic Window Album'
CAT023LP / CAT023CD
Tracks:
Pee, Willy, Cunt, Tits, Balls, Wank, Bonk, Pubes,
Poo, Bum, Shit, Cock, Fuck, Arse, Fist, Cum
c-6: What's this Joyrex repress cd?
This is a bad bootleg, with j4 recorded at the wrong speed. It has
been
said to be limited to fifty copies and has been sold for up to $70
a
piece. It contains all the tracks on j4, j5, j9i, and j9ii, but
is
no way worth it. If you want the joyrex track that bad have
someone
dub you them. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS!
c-7: Since Aphex Twin like anagrams so much has anyone made anagrams out
of
his name?
Yes, Kent Williams, who has way too much time on his hands :-)

f-1: Why doesn't this CD have titles?
It does, see section f-2
f-2: What are all those pictures and circles about??
Well, in his original SAWII FAQ Tim Nowaczyk wrote:
"There are 2 CD's, each with 12 tracks. Then in turn, the 12 tracks are
subdivided
into 3 groups of 4 tracks using circles with "pie" slices cut out of them
to represent
the length of the tracks. Itkinda looks like a trivial pursuit playing
piece.
Then inside, there are larger circles with boxes laying on the perimeter,
each
holding a certain picture, texture, or shape. The size of the boxes
holding the
texture pattern also appear to be relative to the length of the track.
Within
each graphics box, there is then another representation of the pie slice
showing
which track each represents."
