I saw in "Calle 54" on DVD Giovanni Hidalgo playing congas with
synthetic skins with the LP brand.

I own a pair of Salsa model congas by LP with Remo Fiberskin synthetic
heads, but I'm not completely satisfied of their sound.
They have an high-pitched resonance which it takes it far away from
the natural skin sound.

Maybe the LP synthetic skins works better?

Yeah all the great players seem to endorse plastic drums and
heads!
You know like the "patato" fiberglass conga that LP sells (and I
own
one of!)

Um, that would probably be because Fiberskin heads suck!

You got that right. However I will say that in a large grouping
of drummers those heads are LOUD and you can easily dominate
the whole affair with them (if that were your goal).

Yes, and no. As far as I've seen the "LP" synthetic
heads are actually Evans synthetic heads with an
LP logo stamped on. Evans conga heads are MUCH
better than the old fiberskyn heads (also known
as "mondo"). However, many congueros complain
about a "weird overtone" problem. I've played
them on a number of different congas and they
sound pretty good to me but I do know what they
are saying about the overtone thing. A friend of
mine put a set on his congas and then took them
off because of it.

What I use are the new Remo NuSkyn conga heads.
These are the best you can find. They look
especially cool because unlike the Evans'
heads which use a drumset type hoop, the
NuSkyns are flowered around a ring like
a real hide head. Looks are too cool for
words.

The tone is not quite up to hide heads, but
still nice. Bass tones are excellent!
Open tones are also very loud and bright.
On the quinto the tone is a bit toward the
"weird overtone" category and the open
is a bit thin but on other size drums
they aren't half bad. Slaps on the
quinto are killer, while slaps on
the tumba take flawless technique to
get a decent sound with these heads.
It CAN be done, but exepct some practice
time.

The absolute BEST thing about the NuSkyn
heads is that they hold a tune FOREVER!
Rain or shine, hot or cold, you name
it and the drums out of the bag are
right on! No more drums tuning themselves.
No more tuning drift everytime you
play outside! Yes, all that pain
in the butt is gone...and only
at the cost of a slight degradation
in tone.

Yeah, I know there are guys
here who will be getting out the barf
bags at the thought of putting
plastic heads on a tumbadora
but hey, if they work in a nice
air conditioned studios with
hyper expensive drums, fine.
They will be getting the best tone.
Hell, they probably have drum techs
to tune their congas for them
anyway! :-)

Bottom line: If you want synthetic heads
look into the Remo NuSkyn jobbies.
NOT cheap, but the best you can do for now.

I know that LP carry Evans synthetic heads in its catalog.
The Evans heads are white; the ones I saw in Calle 54 played by
Giovanni Hidalgo are yellow, more similar to Remo Fiberskin.

Maybe LP developed customed synthetic heads?

Hi Elio, hope all is well! Giovanni Hidalgo endorses Evans conga heads, but
I don't know if he ever use them. Anyway, Remo has a new set of synthetic
conga heads,
"Nuskyn" heads. Less overtones than the Fiberskyn 3. They look and feel like
a regular raw hide head. For more info check out: http://www.remousa.com

Hope this helps!
