It is either because it has been spelled both ways for over 40 years in and out
of Cuba, in English or Spanish.
I personally always write it as Beny because in Spanish the 2nd n is superflous
and Benny is an English name.

Dunno, take your pick. I personally take the RCA spelling: "Beny Moré,
que banda tiene usted".
>Ok Grupo, which one iss eet? Benny Moré or Beny Moré? Or is it both?
Well, I just came back from the Beny More' Disco in Cienfuegos ..
does that help?
Beny
"Arturo..to add my two cents to the Beny/Benny question. When I was in Lajas I
took a picture of his tombstone . It reads BENNY."
So despite the majority of responses in favor of Beny, his own grave marker
states Benny....things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Where did you obtain this information. In the more than 25 years I have been a
fan and collector of Beny's music and biographical data, I have never seen any
reference to Beny being a homage to Beny Goodman. I have to vehemently
dissagree with the origin of this as their is nothing to indicate this could be
possible. All facts point to Beny improvising his name on the spur of a
moment....here's the situation.
After a month long stay in Mexico City in 1945, Conjunto Matamoros for which
Beny was the lead singer, decided to return to CUba. Beny at this time was
still called Bartolo, short for his given name, Bartolomé, in México it was.
is? a custom to name burros Bartolo ala Fido for dogs in the USA, so upon their
departure, Miguel Matamoros gave Bartolo a bit of advise, change your name for
artistic reasons, and according to all written reports, Bartolo in the best
tradition of the improvisation/soneo skills he possesed, instantly declared to
Matamoros, "yes!, from now on I will be Beny"

"Francisco Aguabella is the John Coltrane of the Conga drum"

From Bembe Feb. 1998 p. 20:
"Su orquesta la fundo al estilo de las grandes bandas de
jazz, el mismo llego a confesar su gran admiracion por Benny
Goodman y esto explica su nombre artistico ya que el de pila
era Bartolome Maximiliano More Benitez. Ademas, en aquella
epoca los musicos preferian las grandes orquestas. No hay
que olvidar que el sello caracteristico de los anos cuarenta
fueron sin duda las grandes orquestaciones del tipo jazz
band."
Rough translation:
He formed his orchestra in the style of the great jazz Big
Bands. He confessed his great admiration for Benny Goodman
and this explains his stage name for the name given at birth
was Bartolome Maximiliano More Benitez. Furthermore, in
those days musicians preferred the Big Bands. Let's not
forget that the jazz Big Bands are the defining
characteristic of the 40's."
I don't think it detracts from Beny's unquestionable and
legendary status as a sonero to realize that the name did
not just spring out of nowhere. And just to make things
really fun, consider this:
Bartolome Maximiliano More Benitez - BENITEZ - BENI - More
Beni - Beni More ... ;-)

Beny Moré would roll over in his grave, to have a disco named after him.

Marcane:
You are of course absolutely correct on both counts, however...
I've heard from two different sources over the past seven years, that Beny
actually preferred "Benny" as in Goodman. Beny apparently was a fan of
the swing bands and eventually acquired quite a library of recordings by
all the U.S. bands of the 30s and 40s. But Benny Goodman was his favorite
which was a determining factor when he was looking for a name to use other
thatn Bartolo. The allegation makes more sense when you remember
recordings like "Oh Vida" and "Devuelveme El Coco" plus "Hoy Como Ayer"
which have obvious swing elements.
