Virgilio Marti sings four songs in the soundtrack to the movie "Azucar Amarga",
which he apparently recorded just before he died. Two, "Guaguina" and
"Tambores pa Yemaya," are Cuban rumbas he wrote himself. A third, "Munequita
Linda," is a heartbreakingly beautiful, simple ballad. The fourth is an
unusual version of "Lagrimas Negras", seguing into Marti's "Cuba Linda",
without guitars -- just his voice, percussion, a kind of new age underlay, and
a final great trumpet part by Fermin Cruz. It is very moving, despite the
synthesizers. There is other good stuff in the record.

Can anybody post or send me any information on Marti? I can't find him in the
record stores, I had never heard of him before, and he is obviously a great
singer. I have not heard him mentioned in any of your recent discussions on
great soneros, which has been enlightening.

Arturo, based on some of your postings, this seems like your territory.

Regards.

He appears as both vocalist and percussionist on the Grupo Folklorico
Experimental Albums(now on cd). He also has a solo album on the Caimán label
where he has his own version of "Todos Vuelven".

Virgilio also appeared in two releases by Carlos Patato Valdez.

1.  Authority  (LP Ventures 393)  1976
2.  Ready For Freddy  (LP Ventures 419)  1976

These were released by LP Ventures which was a record company run by the
instrument makers LP.  Maybe contact them to find out if those releases

Unfortunately those recordings have not been re-issued on cd. I, along
with many others have tried to get the masters to re-issue them but we
have not had any luck...

Virgilio Martí is also on the legendary Patato Y Totico album on Verve that
sadly has never been re-issued completely, although 2 of the tracks appear on
the Verve, 2-CD compilation, "More than Mambo". The Patato Y Totico album has
been pirated on LP/CD with a cover that shows Patato sitting by a palm tree
here in Miami. Virgilio Martí also has a late 60's Lp on Gema (never
re-issued) with HIS earliest version of Todos Vuelven. Virgilio is also on the
original soundtrack album for El Super, where he has a killer track called, Y
Cambie El Viento. Moreover Virgilio appears on the Dos Mosqueteros album with
Pacheco Y Pupi where he has another gem called, El Penado. Finally "El
Ruiseñor de la Rumba", Virgilio appears on several LP's with Patato, Totico Y
Kako e.g Lo Ultimo en la Avenida and other LP's of the 60's & 70's either as a
percussionist or as a singer.

That album has always been one of my favorites. besides the musicians
mentioned, it also features Arsenio & Cachao. and a great version of the
Brazilian tune "Mas que nada". i never knew it was a pirate! it says RVC
Records (Hialeah, FL) on it, and i've had it for over 20 years now.

Virgilio Marti's solo album on the Caiman label was re-released by the
British label GlobeStyle under the title "Saludando a los Rumberos".
I have it on vinyl but it might be on CD.

This is the address on the back of the album.

Hello Marcane!

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to get some clarification. I just recently found the "Patato y Totico" album with Patato sitting by the palm tree, and based on my internet search, I'm gathering that this album was originally released on the RVC label and then re-issued and re-mastered on Verve.. are you sure it's a pirate? I need to know! Thanks!
