I have seen a few postings about "JYDE" in the past but I have never
heard of them.
Can someone, anyone tell me about "JYDE"? Who they are? Where they
are? How I can get a recording of them? I am dying to know. People
rave about them, and I consider myself pretty in touch with the a
cappella community, but I still know nothing about "JYDE"

Thanks!

Jyde was a group that existed in St. Thomas in roughly 1998-1999. They had 7
members, 4 of which I knew

- Greg Dodson, former member of UVA's Academical Village People,
graduated 1997
- Chris Hawkins, former member of UVA's Hullabahoos, graduated 1997
- John Stanzione, former member of UVA's Hullabahoos, graduated 1998
- Dave Cary, former member of UVA's New Dominions, graduated 1998

I think Andrew Breen also sang with them for a while (also a former
Hullabahoo), but I'm not sure about that. I DO know that Samrat Chakrabati,
former VP for FOCS, was their vocal percussionist.

They spent about a year performing in St. Thomas, but they are no longer
together, and their website (http://www.jyde.com) is now for sale. BUT,
Stanzione ("If it's not Scot-tish, it's CRAP!") did post a letter to the
Hullabahoos Alumni web site that captures most of the information about the
group.

I hope this helps!

Hey, is that the same Andrew Breen that was with Blind Man's Bluff???

Mere vocal percussionist? Samrat was their musical director and insanely
prolific arranger (excepting a Hullabahoos arrangement or two, out of thirty
or so).

They also tried to hold a east coast reunion tour in October '99, but they
only got through three shows (including one at Brandeis that I drove five
hours to see [and it was worth the drive]) before something happened and
they cancelled the remaining dates.

Aaaaaaaaaand rounding out the Top Seven:

- Nick Niles, former member of BC's Bostonians ('97)
and The Hyannis Sound ('97-98)

here,
let me shed a little light on JYDE.

K-dog has some of his info a little mixed up, but the thought was
good.
JYDE was formed in October of 1998 in Burlington, NC at the residence
of one David Cary (former New Dominion and alum of (The) Hyannis
Sound. Dave said to me one day during the summer of 1998 "hey, what
if we started a group and went towards a tropical location"? To which
i replied, "sounds good, sign me up. anyone in mind to sing in this
group?"
Dave suggested that he knew a guy or two from UVA (John Stanzione and
Chris Hawkins) and he had also been thinking about asking Samrat
Chakrabarti (a member at that time of (The) Hyannis Sound and also a
former member of FOCs. So Dave mentioned it to Samrat and he said
"I'll do it if i can get my friend Nick Niles (Bostonians and Sound)
to sing too. Samrat talked to Nick and he said yes, and so, the
brainchild of David Cary was born. We had no name, and no 7th member,
but we set out to NC to begin rehearsing and to try and find a place
where we could sing. We decided on St Thomas. Next came the task of
a 7th guy. Innitially we had thought about calling John Clark from
the Tufts Amalgamates. He is a fantastic arranger, a great singer, a
wonderful Percussionist, and the most Bad-assed a cappella recordiong
engineer i have ever had the pleasure of working with. John wasnt
available. At the same time we were thinking about John, we were also
being introduced to Greg Dodson by way of emails and recordings that
the UVA guys had. Greg has a phat bass voice and a butter solo voice.
Greg took a leave from his job at Capital one (was teased with emails
of colorful photos of the USVIs) and he joined us in NC. The group
was complete, but the group had no name and no repertoire...
Samrat suggested JYDE a combination of jeckle and hyde. He said it
would symbolize the metamorphosis of human voice to instrument sound.
We liked it and JYDE was born. (this is a long post!)
so, now, repertoire.
Samrat was at the helm as our cheif musical director (although John
Stanzione or "Z-1" brought some great tunes to the band) and before
long he had 7 cover tunes, and two originals (one written by Nick
Niles, and adapted by Samrat) Z-1 brought us "No one is to blame" from
his B'hoos catalogue.
we rehearsed for 3 weeks or so, and then headed for C-ville VA, home
of UVA and some amazingly beautiful women. We recorded our tunes at
Virginia Arts studio and in one week we had an unmixed CD.
Myself, Dave "DC" Cary, Nick Niles, Greg "G-Reg" Dodson and Chris
Hawkins then drove Dave's dad's Van to Miami and put it on a barge
headed for the USVIs and we boarded a plane. Samrat and Z-1 stayed
back to mix the CD and would join us later.
We arrived on St Thomas and took a Cab to our apartment and unpacked.
The view was amazing, and the beach was a mile away.
eventually, Samrat and Z-1 joined us with our CDa dn we began pounding
the pavement looking for singing work. This was NOT EASY! Seems that
unless you are a one guy band with a guitar and a midi set up of
accompaniment and only want $100 and a beer, there is very little
performing work to be had down there.
eventually we found work singing at Windam Sugar Bay resort. We sang
for food and some money, and the bar was open for us (i think...?).
we had day jobs and spent lots of time rehearsing and learning more
tunes. (24 in all) and eventually recorded the rest onto a Live CD
called "JYDE LYVE at Global Village, St John. Global Village was by
far our best and most lucrative (sp?) gig. In Fact, when the group
began talking about when we would leave the islands, they offered us a
steady gig for much more money than we had been payed yet. I am still
not sure how we ended up leaving. Anyway, we recorded our last show
and sold a ton of them, as well as selling probably 3000-4000 CDs in
our time there.. I still have 3.
Jyde got back together for a one week tour of the east coast in
October 1999. We sang at a resturant in DC, at UVA with the B'hoos and
at the Paramount Theater in Burlington, NC. Our last stop on the tour
was Brandeis (Samrats old school where he founded Voice Male)
the show was fantastic and truly was a "last hurrah" as we kept
calling it.

Now, JYDE is nothing but some amazing memories for its members, and 2
recording of 24 songs that will always be the best a cappella we (the
members) will ever be involved with.

Today:
Dave Cary, Greg Dodson, Chris Hawkins and John Stanzione live outside
of the DC area.
Nick Niles is attending Columbia for some post post post grad work.
Samrat Chakrabarti received a Masters in Acting from Harvard and is
now actively pursuing a career in the theater in NYC.
Nathan Altimari (myself) is a pre school teacher outside Boston and
has sung in a few a cappella projects, including Groove, Bostons 2002
Harmony Sweeps Champs.

If you are friendly to me i would be glad to run off a copy of either
of the JYDE cds in exchange for a blank CD and return postage.

Jyde lives on, and who knows, maybe one day we will sing together
again.

thanks for asking.

Nathan Altimari (utility guy)

ps. Breen is a friend of JYDE but was never a member.

Anyone would be crazy not to take Nate up on this offer. Jyde Lyve is
the best production-free a cappella album I own. Swear to God. Do
it. Now. Blank CD and postage for those discs is the best deal in
the history of a cappella.

Hyperbolically yours,

(who's still kinda ticked that the Jyde boys lacked the foresight to
swipe me straight outta my junior year of high school... heh.
Kidding.)
