I've heard SO MUCH a cappella in commercials lately, and I'm realizing
that the frequecny really hasn't let up in the past decade. In fact, I'll
bet there have been over 50 ads that have featured a cappella music. I'll
start the list with a few:

Chili's Baby Back Ribs
Almond Joy/Mounds - Rockapella (I've heard two differet spots, seperated
by a year?)
Ocean Spray - Bobby McFerrin
Levis 501 jeans - Bobby McFerrin
Burger King - Vocal Percussion
Ben and Jerry's - almost a decade ago ("There Ain't No Haagen, There ain't
no Daas...")

Please add to this list - this is the kinda compiled info that makes the
media take notice...

There was a Fazolli's commercial that was a cappella (Italian restaurant).

And, while I don't think it was a cappella, Richard Bob was the guy who
sang "Fall into the Gap".

Somewhere on (audio) tape I've got an entire reel of commercials that
Rockapella did, including everything from Budweiser to HBO holiday
promos.... it's at least a couple years old by now, but it's still kinda
fun....

up something like 60% and their sales of baby back ribs had almost tripled.

It's funny how many times I heard people in the office singing "I want my
baby back baby back baby back. . ."

To explain, this was a demo tape that Sean brought & played on WERS a

Right -- the Budweiser ad sure did, though, because I got a copy of that
taped off the radio before ever hearing the commercial reel.

One other major ad campaign that comes to mind: Take 6's Northwest
Airlines ads.

Incidentally, there was a Japanese-language NW Airlines ad airing around
that time (I heard it on a Japanese news broadcast waaaaay too early in the
morning) which also featured an a cappella tune. I'm not entirely sure who
was signing it; I was once told that it was Take 6 on there as well, though
it was in a very different style. Who knows...... in any case, it was fun
to hear.....

The original T.J. Maxx commercial (dit-dit-dit dit-dit-dit TJ MAXX) was
recorded by Boston's own National Harmony Sweeps champs, North Shore A
Cappella. They will occasionally break into it during a show.

I believe it is a national commercial.

Here in Utah, America's Best Contacts and Eyeglasses has a commercial with
some a cappella. A man chants "$49.99" while a woman sings "kids get
contacts, eyeglasses" and a little kid chimes in with "eye exam included!"

I don't know if America's best is a chain or not...anyone else seen this

Acappella (the Christian group) -- Kodak film (they used a line from an
Acappella recording, "they are more precious than gold" -- the implication
of the commercial was one's memories, although the original song was about
the laws and commandments of God...)

Dallas-Fort Worth area -- a Tom Thumb commercial with a male barbershop
quartet, standing in the produce aisles -- I kept wondering if it was
Acoustix, or maybe another Vocal Majority-connected quartet

Well, if we're going to go for local commercials, a place outside of
Edmonton, Alberta, is known for the large amount of car dealerships in
the town, and have one of the most annoying commercials on Edmonton
television...

The commercial deals with a whole bunch of people singing "Cars cost less

leading to all sorts of embarrassment from passers-by...

Hey Kyle, so you're the 'Canadaian Universities CASA coordinator" ?
Neat, I didn't know such a thing existed.
My name's Jon Goodine, and I sing with the Maine Steiners right now,
but I'm originally from the Maritimes. The Steiners are looking to
expand their audience, and i was thinking of trying to get them into
the maritimes a bit. Do you know of any groups who are active in that
area?
Or for that matter, does anyone else have any leads in that area?
Thanks for your help,
Jon

How about the one for Sony camcorders that used Acappella (the group)
singing the line "They are more precious than gold" from a song whose
name I can't remember right now, and even gave them credit in the lower
left-hand corner as if it were a music video?

You didn't miss much - we only came up with it as I was driving him to the
airport to go home at the end of last semester and natch, there's not much
for a scholastic ambassador to do during the summer.. <smile>

Aha! So you're him... I *heard* the Steiners were importing talent. <grin>

Our Nova Scotia ambassador (only Atlantic one we've got), Chris Gallant,
is in Vocal Tease - Four the Moment aren't really a cappella anymore, so I
only know of the one group east of Quebec. Anyone else?

I don't know Chris if reads RMAC but I know there are people around here
from all the Atlantic provinces (I've talked to most of you at one point
or another, c'mon, 'fess up to being here...) - someone? Anyone? (If not,
you can get Chris' email/etc at http://www.casa.org/ambassadors.html)

'Course, if you wanna bring the guys out here, I won't argue... <smile>

This note never showed up for me...thanks for quoting it, Jessika.

Too true...I'm in the midst of trying to contact all university choirs in
Canada, and would really appreciate some leads to send e-mails explaining
what CASA is. So far, I've talked to someone from the university of
Regina, and have kept close tabs of my old choir from the University of
Alberta.

If anyone is involved in a Canadian university, would they mind giving me
the names and/or e-mail of anyone who they'd think would be interested of
either joining CASA or contacting me to just talk a cappella? Danke.

Just saw another local commercial for SaskTel (Saskatchewan telephone)
that had to do with saving money on Saturday long distance to the tune of
Duke of Earl. At the end, Saskatoon's StreetNix added their talents to
the commercial...
