WHO WE ARE

Each year, the 25-show tournament brings together more than 1,500
college a cappella singers in hundreds of groups from across the
United States, Canada, and Asia. Out of the 300 groups who apply to
compete, only seven groups – representing the South, New England,
MidAtlantic, Northeast, Midwest, West, and Asia – have advanced to the
finals, held on April 25 in New York City's Town Hall Theater. There,
they will compete for cash prizes and the title of International
Champion.

In a time when American Idol is the hottest show on television, the
popularity of this vocal music competition continues to grow,
garnering attention from the New York Times, the Today Show, and MTV.
The number of college a cappella groups is also growing, from only 150
groups in the mid-'80s to 900 groups registered in the U.S. and Canada
today, with hundreds more forming worldwide.

Already the largest a cappella competition in the world, the ICCA
expands this year to include a sister tournament in Asia, whose
finalist, a group called H202 from National Cheng Kung University in
Taiwan, will appear in this year's finals. Next year, the tournament
will expand to include high school groups.

The ICCA is a production of Varsity Vocals, an educational
organization dedicated to promoting a lifelong interest in vocal
music. Other Varsity Vocals programs include the Varsity Vocals
Scholarship as well as the Best of College A Cappella (BOCA) and Best
of High School A Cappella (BOHSA) compilation discs.
