The Nylons' version of "Good old a cappella" is one of my favourite
songs when performed live.
Did the Nylons actually write that song? If not, what group wrote
and recorded the original version?

I can't say for certain whether The Persuasions wrote the tune, but they
did record it on their 'We Still Ain't Got No Band' album, circa '73.
If I remember, I'll check the liner notes.

According to the credits on the "4 On The Floor" cd, it was written by
L. Carter and O. Nevado and was published by Max Hound Music Co..
However, it also credits Paul Cooper with additional lyrics.
The Trenchcoats also do a great arrangement of this song and they too
have altered the lyrics to put their own stamp on it.
Does anybody know when this song was written? It almost seems like a
traditional song. I was actually surprised to see songwriters
credited.
Also, what are the legalities of adding to or changing the lyrics of
a cover tune for either a live or recorded performance? I'm also
thinking of Sean Altman's additonal stanza in "Zombie Jamboree" and
also covers by the Flirtations and there must be others.

Well, speaking as a guy who has just sent off dozens of forms to the Harry
Fox Agency to purchase mechanical licenses for copyright permission, I can
authoritatively say that there is a clause in the Harry Fox contracts which
says "Lyric changes must be approved by the publisher" meaning the
copyringht owner(s) of the song, who sometimes are hard to find. Buying a
mechanical license only entitles you to reproduce the song, using an
essentially unchanged basic melody and structure of the song, which
inlcudes unchanged lyrics.

The song is from the album *GOLD*. Words and music by Les Carter and
Susan Sisko (1973).

True. This is even more important when publishing music, since a lot of
the copyright holders want to inspect the final product. I won't even
begin to tell you what we went through trying to get permission to use the
Rockapella version of "Zombie Jamboree", and the fact that all the different
recorded versions had been done under mechanical licensing (under which the
original copyright holder retains the rights to the new version) didn't
really help much.
I must say, though, that the folks at the particular company involved,
TRO Music, were extremely helpful and responsive to my plaintive whimperings
3 days before we were due to go to press! Now, if Sean will forgive me for
letting the wrong Performance Notes slip through (grovel, grovel)...
-Anne.
Thanks Colin and everyone else who replied.
This was the info I was looking for!
