To: bbs...@cray.com

John Rettenmayer reacts to Jim Tarantino's request for information on chorus
issues of new membership, quartet promotion, and teaching the craft. His
reaction is that maybe this director is stepping out of bounds. John says that
these issues should be addressed by the Music VP, not the director.
I'm afraid I don't know much about the general organization of SPEBSQSA chapters
but I think I can assume that each is somewhat autonomous in deciding how they
organize their chapters. This is true in Sweet Adelines. While there is quite
a bit of consistency in organizations, there are significant differences which
remain within the bounds of accepted practices.
While I can't speak for other chapters, I can jot a few notes about how the
Rich-Tone chorus is administered. I'll admit it isn't perfect, but we've
managed to struggle on for a few decades. This chorus has two leadership
bodies, the Music Committee (MC) and the Board of Directors (BOD).
Just a few comments about the BOD: our 12-member BOD has a president, vice
president, treasurer, recording secretary, and corresponding secretary. Each
BOD member is assigned responsibility for an area usually worked by committee
(e.g. publicity, costume, etc.) The BOD is largely reponsible for financial
administration of the chorus.
The Music Committee head is the director. The MC consists of the choreography
team, section leaders, and music-qualifiers. The MC is supplemented by members
of Show Production committees as they are formed. The President of the BOD is
also a member of the MC, but all music related (whether they are what you call
"direct" or not) administration. This includes concerns regarding the issues
about which Jim has requested information.
The issues, new membership education, quartet promotion, and teaching the craft,
are all music education issues. Everyone believes that introducing new voices
to the craft, singing in a quartet, and general advanced education in the craft
are important to the performance of a chorus. It is very important to the
director to be involved in this education of the membership as this strongly
affects how well and how the chorus performs what the director is directing.
Now, I will comment that there are overlaps in the BOD-MC structure which
sometimes causes conflict. John, my reaction to your reaction is that you let
your directors too far off the hook!

Subject: Response to Directors as administrators.
Yesterday I wrote a request for information concerning new member
orientation, quartet growth, and barbershop craft education. This
request incited a valid question/criticm of chorus directors who wear
too many hats and often play in the administration domain. While I
agree with the concern,However we must be careful not to over-
constrain the input of the director. Directors (particular
in my case) have a level of musical knowledge and experience that
earns them the director position. Assuredly, a director's number one
responsibility is directing the chorus, but shouldn't the director
also have the latitude to influence those systems that would
facilitate his/her musical direction. For example, my request was for
information that all have a direct impact on musical growth (i.e.,
orientation, quartetting, and craft). Strong processes in these areas
are worth strong political capital because they are indeed related to
chorus performance. The way new members are trained, placed, and
motivated should be congruent with the director's approach to musical
direction. Not doing this can result in a tug-of-war between the
quality level the director expects and the quality level the music
team is providing.
Another point to raise is that we must be careful not to
generalize our individual chorus structures and philosophies on to
other choruses. Some choruses are acquiring new leadership and they
need different types of direction/guidance than other more "intact"
choruses. Also, some choruses just may have more active directors
than others; it's a matter of individual differences and style. If a
chorus has a active director and they feel that this contributes to a
winning formula, then more power to 'em. If the chorus desires a
more passive director, then the membership should express that
sentiment.
Our chorus is currently using the team approach to problem
solving. It just so happens that I am on a team with our director
and the director is our team leader (by consent of team). He is so
because of his knowledge and experience in developing music systems.
I was "assigned" the task of info collection given my interest, access
to resources, and willingness. So, "assign" in this case may have
been an inappropriate word choice. I should have said "empowered"
since this was my idea to this in the first place. My director liked
the idea of soliciting feedback from other choruses, thus he lit the
fire under me to get me going.
By the way, I have indeed recieved lots of outstanding feedback.
For those of you who wrote - thank you. For those of you with ideas,
I'd love to hear them. Hopefully by compiling chorus successes and
publishing them here, we can make all of our chapters better places to
sing and make the lives of our directors a little easier.
Cheers!

I came up with the truly awful verse:

So tack on your own verse and post it back to the list. Don't break the

going flat a full third every song, his tenor showed up half an hour late

Does AOL give you the ability to ftp now? I had thought they were

I take it my import hint list helped out and you have the import process
down, now. Cool... Please tell me how you ended up doing it (Mac to Sun
xfer) for future reference.
Thanks for the data, but I've got a problem! The email transfer worked
great (uuencode, mail, I uudecode), but I couldn't view it! It translated
into what looks like a legitimate FrameMaker 3.0F document, but I have
no way to see or print it. Even with almost 200 unix workstations and
PCs locally, we don't have a single copy of FrameMaker up, nor could I
find a converter that accepts FrameMaker as input (I need to eventually
get it to PostScript for printing). Can you please save it in another
format? Any bitmapped standard should be good.
I have the XViewer (XV) as my primary viewer, and various converter
routines. I can import these formats to XV:
* Alias, IRIS bin dumps, Cubicomp/Vertigo, the old .di dithered images,
* Unix faceserver, MacPaint, MOVIE BYU .PIC, Wavefront RLA, Sun, Targa,
* xbm, xwd, Abekas yuv, SGI RGB, and FIT.
Also, XV can handle directly:
* GIF87, GIF89, JPEG, PBM/PGM/PPM, TIFF, PDS/VICAR, Sun Rasterfile and
* all X11 Bitmap formats
Once into VX, all of these formats can then be colormapped, scaled and
converted to Color PostScript for printing on our Color PS printer/plotters.
I *could* also take a Color PostScript file and just print it, but I lose
the ability to manipulate it, and have to print it to view it. Scaling
and color compression or translation were all I really needed to worry
about, and that won't be important if it is already set up for the size
format and colors we will be using. I then plan to take the "proof" to
Kinko's for final printing.
As far as images go, color would be sharper, but would increase our printing
costs. At this stage I think full color is fine since we aren't making
hundreds. You may wish to use a reduced color set for simplicity (no
fine blended or graduated shades in the image, just basic colors).
Can you supply the graphics in one of the above formats?
- - Keith
PS - Three things:
1) I'm CCing this message to the list. Now everyone else knows what image
formats I can handle, if they wish to submit art for consideration.
2) Please CC Janet Joyce <7650...@CompuServe.COM> to keep her in the loop.
[To the List - a new badge option... 2 1/2" "Buttons by Janet". We're
exploring creating & printing the graphics and making customizable
buttons. I still like the idea of an "Ascii-Art" graphic to keep the
"net feel", but we may be able to do it in color and make them look
sharp...]
3) I just noticed a posting about a bbshop graphics archive. I'll go
raid it to see what's there. What formats can *you* import into your
graphics routines? With XV, once imported, I can convert *to*:
* GIF, PM, PBM (raw, ascii), X11 Bitmap (xbm), Sun Rasterfile,
* BMP, PostScript, IRIS (RGB), JPEG, or TIFF.
In addition to colormap editing, intensity and scale controls, the
Color options on saving are:
* Full Color, Reduced Color, Greyscale, or B/W Dithered.
I could also convert it to:
* MacPaint, NeWS, PICT, or yuv
by saving it in my SGI Iris format (scaled and colored correctly) and
then using an SGI converter. Before anyone suggests it, I don't have
Jef Poskanzer's PBM utility package running yet (it converts anything
to anything), since I had some trouble compiling it on my SGI Crimson
and don't have time to investigate. If I find anything applicable in
the bbshop image archives, I can convert it into a useful format and
forward it to you, or let you know so you can grab it. Can you FTP
to the site yourself and convert formats?

I just got this from a bass player friend, and thought I should post it.
It is a Staff and Tab paper printout in PostScript. If you want it via
FTP, go to:
ftp.uwp.edu /pub/music/lists/bass/lessons/staff_and_tab_paper.ps.Z
Note that if you get it via FTP, the first line (%!PS-Adobe-2.0) is
missing and it won't work. I have added it back in here.
Is there a PostScript fiend that wishes to modify this for the standard
barbershop dual staff like we buy? If so, please feel free to tweak it and
repost the new version. (Sorry, I'm rather busy right now with IHC :-).

Here's the *real* winner, also from my bass player friend. This program
will generate a Chord Formation Wheel when sent to a Postscript Printer.
I've just printed it on a transparency, and "voila", instant plastic version.
Just like the other one, it is available via FTP at the same site:
ftp.uwp.edu /pub/music/lists/bass/lessons/ note.wheel.readme
/pub/music/lists/bass/lessons/ note.wheel.ps
Should I post this to the list? It's REALLY long (67K total text).
I'm not sure it would survive the 50K limit imposed by older intermediate
machines.
I could post it in two parts, but some netters may be connected via a
service that charges you by the nnK xferred, and may not wish to pay for it.
I don't want to be an FTP server, so please don't ask me to fetch it for you.
I can post the "FTP by Mail" instructions from DEC for those that need it
another time. (I'm STILL busy with IHC and work! :-).
I've just included the .readme file here as a description.
BTW, this site is a goldmine for music buffs. It has chords and tabulature
for TONS of songs, for the instrumentalists among us...

Hi,
Here I include a tool for beginner. It is a PS file. Print it and you will
get 2 circles, one bigger than the other. Put the small circle on top of the
other. The large circle contain the 12 notes. The smaller 12 numbers :
I ii II iii III IV IV+/Vo V V+/vi VI/VIIo vii VII
And the name of the interval from the tonic (i.e. I).
You get it ? By turning the circle you'll be able to find chords formations.
let take two examples :
1)
say you want to find what notes compose a Dmaj7, you should
know that the formula for Dmaj7 is : I III V VII
then turn the I (smaller circle) to be in front of the D
(second circle) then read the note above I III V VII.
2)
say you have 3 notes D G Bb to find the name of this chord :
- put the I in front of the D then try to find a pattern that
you know
- put the G in front of the I then you find that Bb is in front of iii
and D in front of V .. Yes, it's a Gm
- ...
Hope with these small examples you get the idea.
Let me know of any improvment,
Pascal.

This is a first posting, although I've been enjoying for quite a while.
Is there anybody out there from East York? Maybe somebody who was around in the early 50s when the newly-crowned Buffalo Bills came through, and when
the Schmitt Brothers were joined in Massey Hall by the SAI quartet(te),
the Big Four (and they were!)? I guess there aren't many left from the
chorus of that era.
BTW, there's a morality tale here. I went to high school not 100 yards
from the East York chapter meeting place. I was active in both church and school music programs, but never was I contacted by a barbershopper. Shucks,
if I hac been, maybe I'd be one of those Golden Moldies, and might even have
some kind of medal.
I know, for instance, that Bob Wiffen (a year ahead of me) has been active
in Scarborough and in quaartets, but I don't think that came from a
school contact. We had a pretty good program (such things as Brigadoon,
Pirates of Penzance, and Judas Maccabeuss(s?), no less, but nobody
from the barbershoppers tapped that talent pool. Our Collegiate Quartet
contest shows how rich it can be.
Please, from a guy who might have had another 30 years of singing,
instead of just hearing those wonderful chords in his head, or
getting in trouble with the church choir director for singing
a neat note, MAKE ways to at least let high school kids know
that barbershop is available. Use/develop/find contacts with the
schools--the kids will at least have a chance to say no, or maybe
come back when they realize what they are missing!

I grew up in the town of Bemidji, located in northern Minnesota. They had
both SPEBSQSA and SA (no I back then) chapters and I knew most of the
members from both groups. My parents and I used to attend all of the shows;
we love barbershop.
Later, in junior high and high school, I was on the stage crew and ALWAYS
volunteered to work (usually lighting) for the shows. They were always fun.
I thought it would be fun to join the SPEB group when is was "old enough."
All of the men were middle-aged so it seemed like one of those things you
can't do until you're over 21. It's partly my fault that I never checked
about any age requirement but, heck, I sang in church choir with several of
the barbershoppers and had done summer stock shows with their director;
surely they would have mentioned something to me...
Years later I moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. After settling in, I found the
Greater St. Paul Area Chapter. I recall my first visit: there was some
young kid, around 10 or 11. I asked if he was visiting with his dad and was
told, "No, he's a member." It was then I learned there really is no age
restriction (at least not in SPEBSQSA), but typically the younger members
attend with their father.
Boy was I pissed! I thought back to the 15-20 additional years I could have
enjoyed this great hobby but, since NOT ONE of the members from the group
back in Bemidji, even those who knew me from years of singing together in
church choir, EVER invited me down to a chapter meeting.
Both the SPEBSQSA and SAI chapters of Bemidji are now defunct. The reason
they folded was because their members moved away, died or quit to the point
where only a handful were left.
There's a moral to this sad tale: He who doesn't bother to bring guests to
chapter meetings may not only rob someone of years of enjoyment, but may
also find someday there is no more chapter!

Subject: Specific Arrangement Request
I was just listening to the "King's Singers - 10th Anniversary Album" which
is a live recording of the close harmony portion of that particular
performance. The first cut on the 2nd side (yes, it is an LP) is a
barbershop song entitled "When Pa Was Courtin' Ma". I think the lyrics are
quite good (and humourous..."by heck, how they could neck...") and wonder
if anyone has seen an official arrangement of this song. Let me know if
you can help.
By the way, I've checked the Harmony Marketplace Catalogue to no avail.
Thanks in advance,

Here's the patter I know:
"There's a shanty in a town, on a little plot of ground,
With the green grass growing all around, all around,
With the roof so worn, so badly torn,
That it tumbles on down, 'til it touches the ground.
"There's a queen waiting there in a rocking chair,
With an honest to goodness platinum gown,
Lingers on my mind, 'most all of the time,
Keeps calling me back to that little old shack."
The version I sang repeated the patter twice, then tagged off with:
" ... Keeps calling me back (and I want to go back),
To that little old shack (to that little old shack),
In old, shanty town."

TWO VOCAL GROUPS TOUR TEXAS
by Grady Kerr - Dallas
Two very fine vocal groups will soon tour our area and should on
your list of "things to see".
VOCALITAS is an eight man a capella group from Austria that formed
in 1980 as former members internationally famous of the "Boys Choir
of the Viennese Woods". Their repertoire includes renaissance,
romantic, twentieth century, jazz, pop, and barbershop. Winner of
numerous awards they are also known for their many radio and
television appearances and tours of United States, Canada, and
Great Britain.
NOTA BENE is an ensemble of five couples from Vocalitas' home town,
Gumpoldskirchen, Austria. Exposed to a rich musical heritage, Nota
Bene has dedicated themselves to fostering the traditional Austrian
folk songs, but also enjoy international "traditionals" as well as
pop music. Their motto, "For the fun of singing", is displayed in
their performance.
Their home town, GUMPOLDSKIRCHEN, is a traditional wine growing
village on the southern slopes of the Vienna Woods and celebrated
its 850th anniversary in 1990. Although only 20 kilometers from
Vienna, it has maintained its rural character and produces "royal"
wines.

First, thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about "I Dream of Jeanie".
Second, best of luck to everyone on the distribution list who'll be
competing or performing in Pittsburgh next week. Would have been nice to be
on the big stage again myself, but hopefully the guys from Nashua will do
themselves proud in my absence and everything will go smoothly with the new
arrival's delivery (and there's always next year...).
Finally, I've listed my contest predictions below. No disrespect intended to
any contenders I've omitted, I suspect the folks in the judging pit are
going to have as tough a time narrowing it down to five medalists as I did.
(On the "by order of scores" lists, there's only 36 points difference
between the 5th and 13th choruses, and only 32 points difference between the
5th and 12th quartets. It'll likely be a logjam throughout the top 10 in
both contests...)

You can also print out staff paper by editing a file and using underlines
to make the staff lines, then printing the file on a printer. An advantage
of this is your printer doesn't have to understand PostScript. For example,
I have a file that has 12 staves, each staff consisting of 5 lines, each line
made from 176 underline characters, and each staff separated by 5 blank lines.
I print it out on a PostScript printer using the Courier5 font. For an 8
staff page I use 110 underlines per line and the Courier8 font.

Subject: Fred Gielow Update
Well, I finally got all the books mailed out just before leaving for a week at
the beach last week, so all of you who ordered them should have them or will
get them in the next couple of days...just in time for that long plane flight
to Pittsburgh!
Speaking of Pittsburgh, I will not be making the trip (sob!) but will be one
of those "rabid" barbershoppers eagerly looking for news on the Internet as it
happens! So those of you going who can send reports each day, they'll be really
appreciated!!
Anyway, back to Fred Gielow...I got a letter back from him the other day, and
he set me straight on a couple of things:
1) Last year he sent in four videos of quartet parodies to the Rush Limbaugh
TV show (not the radio show), done by a sort-of pickup quartet called
"Order in the Chord". Two of these videos were aired. Then they were
replayed last summer and one again recently while Rush was off on his
honeymoon. The first to make it on the air was a takeoff on "Happy Days Are
Here Again", beginning "Crappy days are here again..." The second was a
modification of "Wonderful One" with rewording to make the "wonderful one"
none other than Rush himself (probably a guaranteed way of making it on
the air!!).
2) Regarding additional copies of his book, "Laughter, Love and a Barbershop
Song," he is basically "out", but says he did leave a supply of "some size"
to his old chapter in Poughkeepsie, NY. There have been orders trickling in
over the years, but there may still be some left. He says to contact
Bud Fair, 15 Sheraton Drive, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 (phone 914-462-6564). He
thinks Bud is asking the jacket price ($9.75) plus $2.00 postage/handling.
And by the way, he is utterly delighted that the requests from you all were
so enthusiastic! He really appreciates your interest.
(as a side note, I'll say I've been receiving your checks and notes telling
me you're already enjoying the book, and will certainly let Fred see your
comments...I'm glad you like it. It is a great book.)
3) I asked him about a possible sequel to his book, a more up-to-date version,
and he said, in a word: "absolutely not under any circumstances, no way,
forget it!" I guess I'll put that down as a "maybe"...:) He says there's
just not enough interest to make it economically feasible. If anyone else
thinks they can take up the challenge, Fred says, "Go for it!"
4) Fred's latest quartet is a long-distance one, with Fred on bari in Florida,
Fritz Jones on bass in Poughkeepsie, Bill James at lead in Virginia, and
Bill Easterling singing tenor from Tennessee! They had one rehearsal back in
January and will have had their second rehearsal at a family cottage on
Lake Michigan this past week! He sent me a tape of some of their songs,
their repertoire is already at about 25 songs, and they sound like a fun
group!
Anyway, that's the latest on Fred. I think I've still got two outstanding late
orders for the book, and I'm trying to get my hands on a couple and will get
those mailed out asap. In the meantime, please keep those checks coming if you
haven't paid yet (and thanks to those who've already sent it in!)...I didn't
have a chance to ask Fred about his preference for the donations, but the
overwhelming vote is for the Museum/Archives at Kenosha, so that is where they
will go. I know Fred will be delighted.
Anyway, one last shout of GOOD LUCK!!! to all the competitors going to the
International Convention next week! I wish I wish I wish I could go...maybe
next time.

In fact, it seems that he also "modernized" some of the words to the
song, and rearranged the order in which they are sung. Making the
arrangement more coherent in the 1980's. I don't have the lyric
handy, but saw it last week, and noticed the differences.
I definitely agree that the original verse is quite good.

It's true that there is no minimum age in SPEBSQSA, but individual
chapters would be well-advised to adopt some sort of policy before the
need arises.
Most chapters have some sort of rule that a minor (under 18) must be
accompanied by his father, or by some other adult who is willing to
accept responsibility IN WRITING for the boy. There are just too many
things that can happen while out of town (or even in town), starting
with the kid getting drunk and leading to who-knows-what, and the last
thing a chapter needs is a lawsuit from the kid's parents.
In one of my chapters, an 11-year-old boy wanted to join, and we adopted
the above rules. He was disappointed that he couldn't join. But the
barbershopper who first brought him to a meeting was later arrested for
alleged child molestation! (And the police picked up the guy during our
CHAPTER MEETING!!) So we were very glad we had adopted the policy and
denied the boy's membership. It would have been awful to have had our
chapter somehow tied in with this man's crimes.
(Note: I feel fairly safe in relating this story, since I've been in
seven different chapters and I'm not saying which chapter this happened
in...there are readers of this list who already know the whole story.)

Just a comment...
Conversations about "why wasn't I invited to join when I was a child" and Tom
A's discussion of what to beware of when allowing minors to join ellicit this
response from me:
In SAI (I don't know if it's International or just our region), there is an
organization around introducing the youngest generation to the barbershop style
of singing. We call it Young Women in Harmony. High schools, daughters of
members, and others can join in an education process to the point where they
participate in chapter productions and contests (given the consent of parents).
There are others on the net (Susie..) who know much more and are even involved
who could provide more information if there is interest.

My chapter doesn't have a written policy, but I have heard this subject
discussed on several occasions. In general the chapter will help youth
groups interested in barbershop, and they always welcome to visit and sing.
But the chapter does not actively recruit minors.
I was told this has nothing to do with liability, children simply have too
many activities to choose from as it is. We don't want the reputation of
"stealing" talent from local high school groups or the college. However, if
a young guy insists on joining we won't say no.
It is my belief that if we give young men a positive experience with

Hello Tom, Dave, et al,
Of course, Dave. I was the lad's dad. And I never for a moment regretted
him singing in either the St. Paul Chapter, or the Great Northern Union,
which gave my son, Tom (now 18 and a member of the 91 voice
Minnesota High School Chorale which is in France to celebrate the liberation
of France at Normandy), the opportunity to compete in 5 international
competitions, and 4 medal finishes. He has friends from around the world
because of his barbershop love. From Rostov, to Hellsingborg, to the UK
and then the Down Under. He attended Harmony College and buddied
up with other young guys from around the country. Now when he is in
competition with other fine choruses, he actually knows some people in them.
And now, he will be attending University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point
as a Music Education Major. And I can't begin to tell you what barbershop
has done for him.
If anyone wants any comentary on any aspect of his 7+ years in this "adult
oriented" activity, let me know and I will testify to the end of time about the
positive nature and outcome of his participation. And if you don't believe me,
then ask Roger Harris (Family Ties) of Jaynesville/Beloit, Wisconsin. He'll
tell you how it helped Keith to start the journey to become a professional
music man. How it helped young Paul develop into such a fine young man.
Those of us Dad's who took the chance and included these young guys as
full members, are proud to talk about the great influence barbershop AND
BARBERSHOPPERS have had on their kids.
In response to Tom's cautions about the dangers present if the parent is
not present: I too share concern. But it also has to be measured in the
same light as the fact that several young men have been active in the Twin
Cities world of barbershop, because one guy cared, and sponsored
them. That guy is a special friend of all three of us (Tom, Dave, and I).
He is Doug Chapman. Baritone of the former Night Howls. He has
personally sponsored several young men, who presently are active
in some form of singing as adults because of their barbershop start.
Doug is a fine guy and such a credit to barbershop. I first met him some
28 years ago when he was the alumni advisor for a fraternity I was joining
in college. He had us singing already, back then.
If we start writing all of our rules on the exception of one bad apple, then
we will strangle our own organization. What could have occurred has
nothing to do with barbershop. It is an ugly phenomena that has struck
across all aspects of our life, and even the Boy Scouts didn't escape it
unmaimed.
Meanwhile, you chapter officers and members, make those young guys
AND their dads, a vital part of your organization.

Glad to have the update on Tom -- congratulations!
I too, saw the wonderful effect barbershop had on fathers and sons (and
audiences) during my 10 years in El Paso and later with the GNU. Barbershop
provided a great father-son outing, supplied us with pure, hard to find tenor
voices, that seemed in short supply in Border Chorder land. And... wowed
audiences wherever we performed, since it was unexpected.
We had up to five in the El Paso chorus at our peak. They always knew their
music and their moves. Since the kids had to stand in the front row to see
the director, they got an immediate reaction from the audience. I remember
crowds peering around the director to check them out, and having fun at
afterglows trying to match them up with their fathers.
The benefit was a two-way street, not only did the choruses and the fathers
gain, but the boys learned a deeper appreciation for music that often flowed
into bands, orchestras, choirs, and even rock groups. One is now a
successful dentist. I've lost track of the others (but fully expect they are
doing well -- and that all are drug-free!)

Another college quartet update : The bass from the 1993 second place

Obviously the college quartet contest is attracting a number of talented

Yes, Doug is a great role model for how we can get younger members to
join and STAY in a chapter. He not only made friends with us and made
us feel like part of the gang, he also was the first to offer rides
for us when the chorus sang out of town and car-pooling was not centrally
controlled. (Back in the early 80's, the St. Paul chapter had at least
a dozen guys who were under 22 years old.)
He also made weekly trips to the University of Minn., when several of us
were students there living in the dormitory without cars. If it weren't
for Doug, we simply wouldn't have been able to attend chapter meetings.
(I don't think we would've had the guts to call around looking for
rides; *Doug* called *us*.)
P.S. -- Doug is a professional writer and I keep telling him that he
would absolutely love interacting with this bbshop mailing list,
but he's still holding out...if you know him, help me apply pressure! :-)

Can someone send me more information about Young Women in Harmony.
We are in Colorado (Boulder/Longmont area).
My daugher is 11 and is counting the days until she can join a
womans barbershop group. If I understand the rules correctly,
this would be when she was 16 provided she could get a sponsor.
I'd love it if there was a program which would get her in sooner,
or at least some exposure.
Kelly's dad is a barbershopper. Kelly's biggest disappointment
in life (so far :-) was when she found out that there was
absolutely NO WAY for her to join SPEBSQSA.
Right now Kelly is in a wonderful Children's Chorale and in Band
(trumpet). The Children's Chorale is a wonderful experience and
Kelly is learning alot, but the music is very formal and hard for
a girl who LOVES barbershop.
Short story - when Kelly was getting ready to audition for chorale,
she and my husband practiced the required piece carefully, got Kelly
all ready to go and were walking out the door when I reminded them
that Kelly would be auditioning with a piano. Both my spouse and
Kelly looked at me as if I was CRAZY. Sing with an instrument?
So, Kelly waltzes on stage with her pitchpipe and announces that she
is going to audition acapella (sp?). She made quite a hit, but they
made her audition with the piano too.

I have several comments about Kids in Barbershop, if you will hear them.
I am a 10-year member of the Society, and proud of it. I started in my
Dad's chapter when I was 15. I have held chapter offices, directed the
chorus, sang with two quartets, and even put on our annual show as the
chairman in 1994. I plan to do an even better one in '95! I love
Barbershopping!
I've gotten so much out of this organization that I can't say enough
about it. However, the point made about kids having other things to do
is well taken. I would suggest that chapters be open to young men, and
even encourage them, but only as long as there are willing and interested
prospects available. If any of you have ever heard Ev Nau from the
Kenosha staff tell his story about his first Barbershop experience, then
you know about the fears that I have. I would hate to have some quartet
or small group of young men be turned away by any of our membership just
because they "looked" inexperienced. I think "Harmony Explosion" is a
great way to expose young men and women to our hobby and let them take it
from there.
Keep Preserving and Encouraging, and they will come! I'm certainly not
going anywhere. I love this stuff too much!--

To: bbs...@cray.com

IHC FAQ version 1.0 is nearing wrapup. People are going to be hitting the
road soon, and one of the open issues is still the uniforms. We've got a
*lot* of extremely talented individuals joining here. We *do* need to do
something to keep this from looking stupid, yet be quick, cheap, and easy.
The current disagreement as noted by lots of email is that most people
*really* did not want to look like nerds. Here is my suggestion...
Lets do the "Universal Uniform". I've been in several startup choruses,
and this works well:
1) Black from the waist down
- pants, belt, skirt, slacks, shoes/boots, hose, socks, whatever
2) White from the waist up
- shirt, blouse, whatever
Since we are a worldwide, professional community, we should add:
3) Colorful or "power dress" accessories (Professional look)
- scarves, power ties, vests, jewelry, bright colors, etc...
4) We're global! Be regional or ethnic in style! The net is everywhere!
- show off your western boots, saris, (black kilts?), n/s
hemispherisms... etc.
*** Think lightweight (remember: "Middle of July heat"...)!
- short sleeve (after all, this is our "summer" uniform ;-)
*** Think Professional, not Nerd
I've found the black/white line is *more* than enough to make us look
"together", yet the contrast of regionality, professionalism, and bright
colors would be impressive...
Hopefully, *everyone* can do this without going shopping, and gets the
chance to be creative.
How 'bout it? Does this sound acceptable?
(*please* say yes... or suggest something easy and quick...)

The Palomar-Pacific Chapter, FWD, threw another successful "bash" on Saturday
evening, June 18th. Their 27th annual Comedy Quartet Contest featured seven
contestants, to the delight of the sold-out audience in Fallbrook, CA.
Costumes, lyrics and routines were hilarious, from "hobby horses" to
"grocery carts."
Judging for the contest was expertly handled by "The Singing Padres, aka The
Sportsmen Four", last years winners from San Diego's Sun Harbor chapter.
They also had the audience "rolling in the aisles" during a 20 minute
routine in the second act of the show. They were followed by a short concert
performed by the Palomar-Pacific "Music Men" chorus, under the direction of
John Hulbert.
Entries in the contest were "The Forgetters" from Rancho Bernardo; "Variety"
from Downey; "Tried 'N True" from Hemet; "Four On The Floor" from
Bakersfield; "Mutual Fun" from Foothill Cities; "Call 911" from Inland
Cities; and "Finders Keepers" from Palomar-Pacific.
"Finders Keepers" walked off with the first place medals, "Four On The Floor
was second, and a five-way tie was declared by the judges as appropriate
ribbons were awarded.
A great and entertaining afterglow followed, with the incomperable Lloyd
Steinkamp performing as Master of Ceremonies. Everyone is anticipating the
28th next year. SAI and Harmony, Inc. quartets are welcome. It is an event
that should be duplicated in other chapters, 'cause it sure does attract
prospective new members -- and it's FUN!

Even more interestingly, the first MIME message ever sent contains a
performance by a barbershop quartet. The developer of MIME at Bellcore,
Nathaniel Borenstein with a quartet called "The Telephone Chords" sings
a parody of "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" called "Let Me Sing You E-mail"
There is also a digitized photo of the quartet. I haven't listened to
sound attachment so I don't know if the singing is any good or even that
they are actually singing barbershop because I don't have sound
capability, but Borenstein says it is barbershop in the text part of the
message. The sound file is in a format called BASIC SOUND.
If you have MIME and sound capability, you can get the actual file from
my gopher server in the Quartet Information section and give it a listen.

How come nobody is doing a verse? Here's my $.02:
I don't know what all these dots mean,
They have infected my machine,
Something's corrupted my logon,
Can't get to bbshop.com!
{All together now, it's the chorus!}
How do I get on the Internet?
Access routines make me break a sweat,
I haven't figured it all out yet,
Lost in this maze called the Internet!
On a separate (but very related) subject, it occurred to me this morning
that "O Internet" has the same number of syllables as "O Christmas Tree."
Hmmm...

Several of the netters are involved with their respective newsletters and
have stated they will be writing articles. In their mail, they brought up
the subject of pictures. So I guess this will be an easy job that needs to
be added to the job list:
IHC Photographer ("Netographer") - Need one or two photography people.
Should have 35mm camera(s).
Duties - To take pictures of group on behalf of the various newsletter
editor netters. Both black and white (for DTP newsletters) and color
shots (personal, Harmonizer, etc) should be taken, so there are four
ways to approach this:
1) One photography oriented "significant other" with two cameras (BW, Color);
2) One photography oriented "significant other" with a loaner 35mm camera
from someone on the net for the second one, or
3) Two photography oriented "significant others", each with a camera,
4) Mass pandemonium with tons of cameras, someone promising to use BW
film, and a person with pencil and paper to get their addresses for
reprints... <grin> (please, no...)
Option (2) with a Netographer and Assistant, seems the easiest. Volunteers?

Subject: IHC Roster
To: bbs...@cray.com
Date: Tue, 28 Jun 94 16:09:18 EDT
The roster is coming along... We have about 40 *registered* now. Check it
out! We have an *incredible* list of people, including:
Kenosha Employees;
An extremely noted arranger;
An International Quartet Champ (maybe, he's competing again in Pburg);
Many top 5 chorus members;
Quad-voiced Singers;
Directors; and
Section Leaders.
This is why I asked about the uniforms again... So far, feedback has
been very positive on my suggestion (no dissents), but it's still early.
We still need more! Registrations are still trickling in, but I need
to wrap this up so I can distribute the roster and the final FAQ! What
I'd like to see is this:
1) Everyone coming with a group bring in at least *1* more person from it.
2) Announce it at your chapter meeting this week. I didn't think of it
until last week. I did, and I'm getting about 4 more computer-
literate guys in.
3) If you do get them, register them on their behalf (I'll put "c/o" in
the roster for email for now).
If we do that, we'll have *over 80* onstage. WOW! Bigger than some
competing choruses!
I need *EVERYONE* who is planning to be in the IHC (or knows someone who
would like to be in) to send me the following info ASAP (This is still V0.1).
This is required for voice balancing, knowing how many copies of music to
bring to Pittsburgh, etc. Sending for the music is independent of this
roster.
PLEASE JUST REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE, AND FILL IN THE BLANKS! I've had a *lot*
of missing pieces, especially districts, and don't have time to correspond.
Also, *Please* send it in this format (by the numbers), so I don't have to
edit it (much), either...
>Repost... From IHC FAQ Rev 0.1:
*****************************************************************************
+++1.4 Current Membership Count
Current estimate as of 6/22/94 is in the 50-75 range. We have sent lots of
music out, but so far have few people committed to IHC on the actual roster.
Could people *please* confirm with me so we can get a better count, start
voice balancing, and know how many copies of music we still need to bring?
Please email with the Subject "IHC - YES" to:
Keith McClary <mcc...@alp061.alp.ford.com>
Please state in the body of the text:
1) Whether or not you already ordered music or need it at the convention
(so we know how many copies to generate);
2) Both your "common name" and "net name" if not already in your .sig
(my mailer screens it from display, making it harder to compile a list
Please see section 7.0 [Acknowledgements] for the preferred format);
3) Your City/State/Province/Country (if not in your .sig);
4) Organization/District/Chapter affiliation
(ex: SPEBSQSA, Pioneer District, Motor City Metro Chapter, or
SAI, Region ... , ... Chapter).
5) Your Primary Voice Part, and all other parts you *could* sing given
the chosen music and key. We may need to voice balance the group.
6) [optional] Any Chapter/Society offices you may have held, or any special
skill or equipment you may possess (ie Director, Section Leader, Past
President, DTP specialist, have a multitrack recorder for part tapes
production in the future, etc) that you wish to state to help in
matching jobs & abilities.
7) If another person will be singing with us but is not on the net,
please register for them, placing yourself as the email contact.
This is independent of your music order. Getting music didn't commit you
to IHC nor did it place you on this roster. It only indicated that you
wanted a copy of the parodies. That is why we're trying to generate a
roster of those coming from scratch here, so please bear with us ...
*****************************************************************************
Thanks!
BTW, the next rev of the IHC FAQ will be out by Friday. All final comments
are needed ASAP.

Here's the patter I know:
"There's a shanty in a town, on a little plot of ground,
With the green grass growing all around (all around),
With the roof so worn, so badly torn,
That it tumbles on down, 'til it touches the ground.
"There's a queen waiting there in a rocking chair,
With an honest to goodness platinum crown,
Lingers on my mind, 'most all of the time,
Keeps calling me back to that little old shack."
The arrangement I sang repeated the patter twice, then tagged off with:
". . . Keeps calling me back (and I want to go back),
To that little old shack (to that little old shack),
In old, shanty town."
Hope that helps.

How come there are no fearless predictors on the bbshop net?
I won't be there, but here's how I see things coming out in the quarete and
chorus competitions.
Quartets: (1) Nightlife; (2) Standing Room Only; (3) Jokers Wild; (4) 139th
Street; (5) Special Feature; (6) Bingo Brothers; (7) Yesteryear; (8) Great
Stage Robbery; (9) Rhythym and Rhyme (10) Tulsa Tradition. The rest of the
top twenty should include (but not necessarily in this order) Marquis,
Backbeat, Bank Street, Shenanigans, Fred, Arcade, Excalibur, Rumors, Echo
Lane and Harmony works.
Chorus-wise, it's a race for second place. I like (1) Vocal Majority; (2)
Great Northern Union; (3) Phoenicians; (4) Thoroughbreds; (5) Pot-O-Gold; (6)
The New Tradition; (7) West Towns; (8) Dukes Of Harmony and (9) Dukes Of
Harmony. After that it's anybody's ballgame?
Any other opinions?

Sender: d...@sdiv.cray.com
The Norfolk Chapter, The Commodore Chorus, of
Norfolk, Virginia, is seeking a Chorus Director. We are a well
organized chorus of 70-80 active members in an area of over 1 million people.
We compete every year in the Mid-Atlantic District and generally finish
in the upper third of the chorus rankings at contest. We have recently
been 'Most Improved' Chorus for two years in a row. Our membership grew
from 50 to nearly 100 over the past four years; however, this past year
we outgrew our non-musically-trained (but enthusiastic and hard-working)
director. This caused active membership to drop along with the chorus's
morale and collective musical performance. Basically, the musicians in
the group were not being fed musically, so they left. This chorus boasts
several fine quartets, including the Southern Division Champs and Inter-
national contenders, The Old Dominion Line; the up-and-coming 1993 District
Novice Champs, The Hampton Rogues; and the new, but extremely talented and
active, Ocean Highway.
So this call is for a musically talented, enthusiastic, and motivated
director with VISION. We are ready to pick up where we left off a year
ago and give Richmond some competition!
Interested musicians please contact me through e-mail, snail-mail, or phone.
Also, if any of you know of anyone who might be interested, just provide me
with an address or phone number. Yes, we are also looking for "non-member"
candidates.

To: bbs...@cray.com

Interesting... *ALL* (100%) of the email that I had received *except*
for David Melville's net statement has been "uniformly" <grin> in favor of
coordinated dress. Dave George *did* object to wearing (or getting)
black pants, but did not express a "non-uniform" desire, only a wish for
a different choice of color:
> Dave L. George <d...@super.org> wrote:
> I do not like black clothing and I don't have any and don't intend
> to buy any. I'm not Johnny Cash, a minister or any undertaker.
> Tans, blues, grays - yes!
Dave makes a very reasonable request.
Everything from "Thanks for taking it on" to "Wonderful" (John Rettenmayer)
said that I made a good suggestion, and was desired by everyone else so far.
The one really hysterical concept that came up on the "back channel" is
that if we get anyone from "down under", they should have white on the
bottom and black on the top... <grin>
You are right David. *I* don't want to be dragging along another special
outfit either. The *last* thing I want to be involved with is being forced
to come up with another outfit, especially something like: a Sequined
velour tux with the official Internet propeller beanie, gold plated
pocket protector, flashing light tie (computer controlled and syncronized,
of course!), three velcro onstage changes, and flags/guns for the precision
drill routine... <gag, choke...>.
On the other hand, togetherness *IS* fun. I would like to look nice and
relatively similar to others to feel as being part of a group. There is
pride in membership in anything, and I would like to feel proud of being
a part of such a fine group of singers. Group identification with symbols
like badges and looking alike makes it more enjoyable to *me*, and from the
net's response desiring badges (etc), most others seem to think it's fun, too.
Also, a high percentage of anyone who is anyone in [men's] barbershopping
is going to be in Pittsburgh, and I'm coming to the realization that the
*LAST* thing we should do is look like total fools, nor give the impression
that anyone on the Internet is a geek or a loser (white socks, pocket
protectors, Jerry Lewis teeth prosthetic and mannerisms, ad nausium), with
no social sense whatsoever. We're ambassadors for the net, and we're all
professionals to boot. Why not at least look nice?
First Impressions is another obvious reason to look acceptable if we are
going to want to ever do this again, or grow (or live it down... ;-).
Fine. "Uniform" is a horrible word for this, and I hated using it from the
start. It obviously has *way* to much connotation for a few people, but
seemed a reasonable word at the time. I apologise for using the term.
"Coordinated dress" is probably a better term, since the whole *point* of
my suggestion is to *NOT* have to buy *ANYTHING*, and try to make it fit
in to what most people tend to bring along anyways for a nice dinner.
I have noticed over the years that most of us seem to plan to go out to
a nice dinner with *some* group or friend *sometime* during the convention,
and tend to plan on at least *one* reasonable outfit (in addition to the
"comfortable" clothes) as part of the basic packing.
"Black down, white short sleeves up, accessorize to taste" was a no-brainer
for almost everyone, but we did have one person that hates black, and so
should accomodate for it. Dave George *does* have an interesting (and
constructive) suggestion:
> [...] Tans, blues, grays - yes!
Since no one had a problem with white tops, how 'bout this then:
DARK from the waist down (black, navy, deep grey, etc...)
LIGHT from the waist up (short sleeve, white preferrable)
Accessorize "professionally" to taste
Think "I look nice, yet comfortable on a hot day in July"
Good grief... If *this* isn't available in the standard suitcase, what is?
This has *always* been only a suggestion, and up to now had been agreeable
to everyone else. Lighten up, here. This is a discussion, not a mandate.
If you don't want to wear it, fine. No skin off of my teeth. I just know
that if *I'm* getting up in front of most of the [men's] barbershopping
world, *I'm* going to look nice, and I really *would* like to look like
the rest of the group, because it is *FUN*...
I wish to wrap this up and get it into the FAQ, since the final (V1.0) is
being posted tomorrow (my last work day before *I'm* net.dead for the
duration). No changes will be able to be made in the FAQ by me after that,
since I don't have another account, laptop to take with me to PBurg, nor
outside (phone) access to my machine. I will put the group's feeling into
the FAQ if I can hear from all of you by early AM tomorrow. *Please* email
*ME* to tell me if this is acceptable or what you desire.
We hereby have no "Uniform", and mention of how >95% of us will "Dress"
will be placed in the final FAQ tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestions.

OK Harmonetters,
Today's my last day on the net until I return from Pittsburgh (tomorrow's a
holiday and Saturday we - wife and me - begin the great journey), so just
wanted to sign off and say we hope to see you in Pittsburgh. Can you believe
I agreed to a 6:42AM flight out of LAX on Saturday morning?
Again, the Masters of Harmony would like to extend an invitation to each and
every one of you to drop in at either of our rehearsals (Thursday, July 7,
8:30AM-10:30AM, and Friday, July 8, 1:00PM-3:00PM), at the Hyatt Regency, and
say hello, or most especially, to our Masters Class seminar on How to Build a
Chorus, Friday morning, July 8, 9:00AM-10:30AM at the Hilton. Ken Buckner
tells me they're setting up 2,000 plus seats, so we're excited we'll have a
great turnout for this inagural event - I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Finally, good luck to all you competitors, quartet and chorus members alike,
and for me, a special rub of the old rabbits foot for BAM and the Phoenicians
and all of the FWD quartets.
For Keith, thanks for getting the IHC put together, and oh, btw, have you
given any thought to white slacks and royal blue golf shirts? Keith? Hello,
Keith?
Oh well, guess we'll see you in Pittsburgh!

1) Help - anybody know of any available hotel lodging in Pittsburgh? A

E-mail me ASAP if you know of any one who has cancelled or will be cancelling

2)Jay & I met at a barbershop party in 6/85. He was woodshedding with Don
Bagley, Dick Kingdon and a tenor whom I can't remember, and they didn't have
a pitchpipe. Jay said he needed an F#; I sang him what turned out to be an
accurate pitch (he checked it out when somebody finally produced a
pitchpipe). Needless to say, we spent most of the rest of the party
engrossed in conversation.
He proposed to me after coming home from IDAH (the IL Dist. workshop which
was over Valentines Day weekend of '86). After I said yes, he asked me where
I wanted to honeymoon, and I said "Salt Lake City, of course". He couldn't
believe it at first, but it turned out to be wonderful. We got married on
6/28/86 in front of our families, his chorus, my chorus and our respective
quartets.
3 children and 8 years later, we celebrated our anniversary this week - after
coaching on the contest stuff Mon. night with Ev Nau (Becky Sisson and I were
asst. coaches), his chorus serenaded me with "How Deep is the Ocean?" 1 1/2
hours before our official anniversary!

The Pikes Peak Chapter, Highland Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus, of
Colorado Springs, Colorado is seeking a Chorus Director. We are a well
organized chorus of 30-40 active members. We compete every year in the
Rocky Mountain District and generally finish in the upper third of the
chorus rankings at contest. We do an annual spring show each year, and
an annual Christmas Show with the Velvet Hills Sweet Adelines Chapter
from Colorado Springs (to a full house for the Christmas show, I might
add :-) ). Depending on the status of our treasury, we are generally
able to offer a small salary with some decent fringe benefits. We have 4
active quartets presently, and are proud to have in our chapter, the 1993
Senior Quartet Champs, the Rockies IV. They, by the way, are all very
active members of the chorus. The current director, Paul Huff, who is the
baritone of the Rockies IV submitted his resignation due to his heavy
comittments with Rockies IV.
If there is any interest, I would welcome a response via e-mail. Also, if
any of you know of anyone who might be interested, our search committee
(of which I am a part) will be glad to contact that individual. Just
provide me with an address or phone number. Yes, we are also looking for
"non-member" candidates.

Yeah, I sure agree. Can't beat the audience appeal of an ensemble
melding five/six/seven decades of age difference. And one of the
really great things about barbershop is one vivid memory from JAD's
Apple Corps a few years ago: Lou Perry in his seventies with an avid
following of men fifty years his junior.
Southern Gateway has never had fewer than three or four dad/lad pairs
since I can remember. Our 1983 show featured a ten-pair mini-chorus,
and some old-timers claim thirteen pairs at one point, though I wasn't
here then. Jimmy Miller's grandson, Billy Crutcher, won his gold
medal two weeks after his thirteenth birthday.
Although the kids soak up the learning like sponges and often show
great talent, There is an interesting side effect: Most go through
the "chorus brat" stage at some point. Later when the time comes for
them to exercise some leadership, some of the older chapter members
are unable to forget the image of the chorus brat, and don't respond
very well. Sooner or later the frustrated youngster takes off and
carries his talent to another chapter. "Awesome Joe" Connelly and
Scott Brannon are just two of SGC's more notorious fugitives. Our
loss is your gain!
Too bad there is such a liability concern about unaccompanied kids.
That certainly needs to be addressed.
Bill Diesslin writes:
> I was told this has nothing to do with liability, children simply have too
> many activities to choose from as it is. We don't want the reputation of

If the kid is interested-- Gee, we've GOT to find a way! We owe it
to them!

My Dad was never a barbershopper, but has been a fan for fifty years.
(Say Hi to him at Pittsburgh!) He used to take the family to all the
local shows, which usually featured the "Doctors of Harmony" (1947
Champs). My first visit to a chapter meeting was the Niles-Buchanan MI
chapter during my college years. I never had the feeling I was too young
to join, but was just "too busy" until I was out of college.

Sorry, Dick. I've been on and off the net for a year or so, and I'm
still as net.illiterate as the day I started. I'm used to the friendly

Yeah, I meant for that to be replied back to the groupmail thingie. I'd
been whining about quartet names earlier, and the "Note Bene" message
from Grady triggered some more thoughts on the subject.
Uhm. I'm Peter Steiger, a bass with Big D chorus. Managed to nag a few
others into a quartet of the most raw novices, formerly "Three Nice Guys"
(which turns out to already be a registered name), formerly "We Finally
Agreed On A Name", formerly "No, We Still Haven't Got A Name", formerly
"The Yet Unnamed Quartet".
BTW, often I reply to a bbshop@cray comment to the entire list because
_I_ also have no idea what the originating address is. The mailer here
seems to pull names at random, and over half my personal replies get
bounced back to me.

Just wanted to report an event that occured on Saturday, June 24th in
northwestern Wisconsin. With the creative vision, planning and
organization of Wibur Hoppe of the Dunn County Chapter--the Northern
Lights Babershop Chorus, he almost single handedly put together a 100
man chorus consisting of members of 5 chapters of northwestern
Wisconsin. Admittedly it wasn't quite 100 but close (89). Under the
sterling direction of Jim Hall, a marvelous show of golden oldies and
several patriotic numbers were presented to an audience who weathered
some drenching rains. Those who took part in it are still talking about
what a wonderful experience it was to be part of such a chorus. The
audience was very appreciative as well. Other area chapters might be
interested as well. We had three rehearsal prior to the show and
everyone worked hard to make it the best.

Jerry Kirsling's note from yesterday reminded me of a similar event we had in
Eastern North Carolina last September. The Edenton, NC, chapter was just form-
ing, and Charlie Rose, an active RTP and Rocky Mount chapter member, pulled
together with the Edenton boys a charter chapter show that was absolutely
terrific. We had barbershoppers from all over Eastern NC, forming a 100+ man
chorus, and a host of local district quartets came out to make the evening a
real "happening". The show was held in a large auditorium, and since the town
is relatively small, and not many had heard of barbershop before, the local
Edenton boys were very skeptical about getting enough of an audience. Well, let
me tell you, the place was standing room only!! We even had a bigger draw than
the North Carolina Symphony, who usually plays to packed houses on their tours,
(and they even had a FREE concert!). Anyway, the town raved about it for weeks
afterward, and we barbershoppers had a fabulous weekend entertaining them.
So, naturally we're doing it again this fall! We expect a sold out crowd
and a whale of a time! (And, another relatively new chapter down in New Bern,
NC, was involved in the Edenton show and it inspired them to have a similar
one in New Bern this past May. Another great success!) This type of show is
lots of fun if you can collect about 100 guys from different small chapters
who know the same set of music, and have a number (4-5) of reasonably good
quartets to choose from. It's very easy to put together a 2-hour show with a
lot of variety, etc. And giving these guys a chance to sing in a 100+ voice_
chorus is a real kick, especially when their only previous experience is in a
small 20-30 man group. If you're in an area of the country where there's a
bunch of small to medium chapters within a couple of hours of each other, get
them together and put on a show like this! It's terrific.

I can appreciate Jerry's thrill about singing with that 90-man chorus! I
remember the first time I had a similar opportunity. :-)
On a similar note, and in a similar area, the Greater St. Paul Area (MN)
Chapter performs each June, July and August at the pavilion in Como Park in
St. Paul. (This stems, historically, from an agreement with the city from
about 30+ years ago where the city provided them with rehearsal space for
the year in exchange for three freebie concerts in the park -- such a deal
- -- but I digress...). In June the chorus performs alone, usually doing an
encore of their annual show script; in August the share the stage with one
of the local SAI choruses.
In July is the big extravaganza, featuring all of the SPEB chapters from
the Twin Cities metropolitan area (and then some), which has included the
Hilltop, Minneapolis, Bloomington, Minnetonka, St. Croix Valley, Lakeville,
Faribault, St. Cloud and Greater St. Paul Area chapters. One year the area
of representation became even "wider" when we were fortunate enough to have
VOCALITAS, the octet from Austria, as our "headliner."
Each chorus performs three songs, then the whole ensemble of 350-400
barbershoppers come together for a big finale which, in recent years, has
included the stock arrangement (with doctored tag) to "Alexander's Ragtime
Band," Ed Waesche's arrangement of "Sing Me That Song Again," polecat song
"Sweet and Lovely (That's what You are to ME)," the stock arrangement of
"God Bless America (with doctored tag)" and Joe Liles' arrangement of
"Battle Hymn of the Republic."
The pavilion is situated on Como Lake; the sound of the massed chorus
carries across the water and, since the pavilion is usually jammed, many
folks opt to sit on the far shore to hear the concert! (This would be hard
to reproduce here in Phoenix ;-) Sometimes I think they can hear the tags
ring all the way to Milwaukee!
Believe it or not, the whole thing runs under 2 hours, including an audience
sing-along stretch break at the half-way point.
If you are in, or going to be in, the Twin Cities area in mid-July, contact
Ron Young at 612-484-6187 for more information (you can even jump in to sing
with the massed chorus!).
Even if you can't make the St. Paul performance, you could still host a
similar "extravaganza" in your neck of the woods. The trick is to start
organizing things around February and to provide frequent communication to
all of the chapters involved. If you would like additional information on
organizing such an event please contact me directly.

David,
This kind of event looks like a real winner for here in the lower
mainland of British Columbia. We have seven chapters within an hour's
drive from farthest chapter to farthest chapter. We have had exchanges
with individual chapters and occassional interchapter meetings, but
never a giant performance with all joining in together. Please forward
your planning information, as requested. I would love to see this kind
of "harmony" put into action with our local chapters. Hopefully it
would be a real morale boost for the individual members. Thanks,

Just a reminder that there are just as many choruses competing that
will not be in the top 10 than those that will. All of the underdogs
need (and deserve) your support. Please cheer even *louder* when
a group comes on stage that you've never heard of (if you haven't
chosen that set to take a "rest" :-). Our chorus has two guys whose

Hi a cappella fans everywhere,
As I have said before on rec.music.a-cappella, a friend of mine named
Ellaine Downie is studying a cappella music and singers for her Masters
thesis at the Music department here at Monash University, Melbourne,
Australia.
As part of her research, she wishes to conduct a survey of as many a
cappella FANS as possible. I stress, *fans* - you do NOT need to be a
singer to join in this survey. If you have heard a couple of a cappella
groups and liked what you heard (ie everyone on these groups, I would
assume) then you're eligible to fill out the survey!
It might take a while (half an hour or so), but the effort you put in
will be well appreciated. If you could print this out and distribute it
amongst your a cappella-loving friends, that would be great.
Please answer the questions on a separate line, and send your replies to
me at:
sv...@yoyo.cc.monash.edu.au
(which you will do by 'r'eplying to this post)
Thanks very much! If you have any questions, please contact me at the

+++1.0 INTRODUCTION
+++1.1 Group Mission Statement
The Information Highway Chorus (IHC) was formed to bring both male and
female barbershoppers together in close harmony for some good natured
poking fun at how computers and technology have invaded our lives.
+++1.2 GOALS
+++1.21 Short Term Goals
1) Field a MIXED chorus of as many computer-literate barbershoppers (mostly
from the net) that we can get a hold of at the Pittsburg SPEBSQSA
International Convention. We will be singing on Saturday Night, 7/9/94
at the Chorditorium and at several of the afterglow parties.
2) Have a social get-together sometime during the convention (still need
someone to organize it. A dinner, perhaps?)
+++1.22 Long Term Goals
TBD, but it would be wonderful to make this a growing annual event!
This has the potential of becoming another "Capitol Steps" kind of
organization where barbershoppers can "let down their hair"...
+++1.3 Who's invited to sing
Everyone on the "Information Highway" (or who understands and enjoys
computers) that sings Barbershop is welcome to join! We'd like to see
this grow as the Info Highway grows, until we rival the Vocal Majority!
[well, at least in size... :-) kmc]
+++1.4 Current Membership Count
Current estimate as of 7/1/94 is in the 50-75 range. We have about 50
registered now, but expect more to join at the convention. To join the
group:
Please email with the Subject "IHC - YES" to:

1) Whether or not you already ordered music or need it at the convention
(so we know how many copies to generate);
2) Both your "common name" and "net name" if not already in your .sig
(my mailer screens it from display, making it harder to compile a list
Please see section 7.0 [Acknowledgements] for the preferred format);
3) Your City/State/Province/Country (if not in your .sig);
6) [optional] Any Chapter/Society offices you may have held, or any
special skill or equipment you may possess (ie Director, Section Leader,
Past President, DTP specialist, have a multitrack recorder for part
tape production in the future, etc) that you wish to state to help in
matching jobs & abilities.
7) If another person will be singing with us but is not on the net,
please register for them, placing yourself as the email contact.
This is independent of emailing your music order. (We're trying to
generate a roster from scratch here, so please bear with us ...).
+++1.5 Recruiting
*PLEASE* email or talk to your computer-literate barbershop friends
(especially those in your own group) that are going to the convention.
Tell them about IHC, and try to get them to commit, even if they are not
part of this mail list (or even the net) yet. The more, the merrier.
It would be GREAT to go with over 75 the first year out!

+++3.0 MUSIC
+++3.1 Current Song list
#1 INFORMATION HIGHWAY (Let Me Call You Sweetheart "_")
#2 IN THE DAYS OF THE APPLE IIe (In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree "_")
#3 DOWN BY THE OLD BIT STREAM (Down by the Old Mill Stream "_")
Music arrangements:
Heritage of Harmony Songbook - SPEBS# [...NEED ORDER NUMBER HERE...]
>From David Melville <melv...@trg.trglink.com>:
> Arrangements to these three songs can be found in the "Heritage of
> Harmony Songbook". I DID take the liberty of beefing up the tag to "Old
> Bit/Mill Stream", making it more fun for the tenor. ;-) And some of the
> rhythms were "adjusted" to fit some of the "twisted" echoes. If you learn
> the arrangements out of the book, it won't be hard to pick up these minor
> alterations.
+++3.2 Getting the Music - in advance and at the convention
All music and parody lyrics are available from:
David Melville <melv...@trg.trglink.com>
In advance of the convention:
Music may be obtained in advance by sending $2 for copies and p/h to
David Melville <melv...@trg.trglink.com> at the following address:
David Melville
240 S. Litchfield Road, #208
Litchfield Park, AZ 85340-4710
Deadline for advanced copies is Friday, 6/24/94
After the deadline, contact David Melville at the convention site by
finding the Phabulous Phoenicians chorus at the [NEED HOTEL] hotel.
Check at the registration desk for David's location.
The cost at the convention will be $1.50 (for royalties only, no postage)
Please contact David at <melv...@trg.trglink.com> in advance, if possible
to insure he has sufficient copies.
>From David Melville <melv...@trg.trglink.com>:
> Copies of the music will be available in Pittsburgh if you want to "wing
> it." But I'm only planning on bringing around 100, so don't EVERYONE
> put it off until the last minute!
***IT IS NOW AFTER THE DEADLINE*** Please notify David via email that you
will need a copy at the convention [so he knows how many are needed]
(BTW, In case anyone is wondering, David is making no money from this.
All monies collected are for royalties due SPEBSQSA/Harmony Foundadion
for the use of their arrangements with our lyrics.)
+++3.3 Lyrics, Arrangement changes from sheet music
#1 INFORMATION HIGHWAY (Let Me Call You Sweetheart) -
VERSE
Journalists are hyping you day by day,
Information Highway is your name, they say.
Mail to "cray dot com" I post,
It gets bounced from host to host,
Barbershoppers coast to coast
Ride on you.
CHORUS
Information Highway, I'm on-line with you.
If you've got a modem you can join us, too.
Keep those packets moving so my mail gets through.
Information Highway, I'm on-line with you.
TAG
Information Highway, I'm on-line, on-line with you
(I'm on-line with you).
#2 IN THE DAYS OF THE APPLE IIe (In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree) -
CHORUS
In the days of the Apple IIe
Sixty-four K was plenty for me.
I knew nothing of MIPS
As I twiddled those bits,
It was modular coding, you see (argumentively). [echo starts with 4 8th
notes in ms 15]
Now we're all using graphical stuff (graphical stuff) [bass echo only]
Sixty-four K just isn't enough.
So I've out-lived the lives
Of my old floppy drives,
And have dust on my Apple IIe.
TAG [tenor melody]
Now the Apple's not good 'nuff for me.
#3 DOWN BY THE OLD BIT STREAM (Down by the Old Mill Stream) -
VERSE
My darling I am dreaming of the time we met,
When you and I were newbies on the Internet.
My hardware's obsolete now,
And all my software, too,
But still I will remember
Where I first met you.
CHORUS [Lead pick-ups]
Down by the old bit stream (old bit stream)
Where I first met you (I first met you)
Your reply came through (came through)
And my mailbox grew.
>From your .sig I knew (From your .sig file I knew)(I knew) [latter
echo bass only]
That you loved me true (That you loved me too, oh so true)
You were sixteen (sweet sixteen)
And eight bit clean (eight bit clean)
By the old bit stream.
TAG
You were sixteen (hex ten, I mean)
And eight bit clean (from screen to screen)
By the old bit stream (Down by the old bit stream).
MUSIC CHANGES to this song (those ms different than the HoH Songbook
arrangement)
Ms 49: Bass echo on "eight" drops to low Ab (same as the Polecat version)
b = flat
# = sharp
n= natural
^ = note above staff (or in between staves)
1/4,1/8 = quartert note, eighth note, ...
Ms 51-52: text "clean from screen to screen"
Tenor: Eb dotted 1/4; 1/8 Ab^; 1/8 Bb^, 1/8 Bb^; 1/4 An^
Bari: Ab dotted 1/4; 1/8 Eb^; 1/8 En^; 1/8 Eb^; 1/4 Eb^ (this is a FUN one!)
Bass: Ab (low) dotted 1/4; 1/8 Ab(octave); 1/8 G; 1/8 Gb; 1/4 F
The other changes to the arrangement are purely rhythmic to accomodate the
echoes; you can probable figure them out...
************************************************************************
+++4.0 Dress
+++4.1 "Uniform" (Coordinated Dress)
It is officially decided that "we have no uniform", since this is intended
to be a fun activity. Instead, the unanimous decision is to "coordinate
our dress". Attitude is to be "Professionional", not "Nerd". Coordination
is as follows:
1) DARK FROM THE WAIST DOWN - (black, navy, dark grey, etc)
pants/slacks, belt, socks, hose, shoes/boots, dresses/skirts, etc.
2) LIGHT ABOVE THE WAIST - (short sleeves [summer], solids/white preferred)
shirts, blouses, etc.
3) ACCESSORIZE "PROFESSIONALLY" TO TASTE - Feel free to show off your
regionality, since we ARE a global community. We want to look sharp.
power ties, string ties, dress scarves, jewelry, etc
4) DRESS COMFORTABLY FOR THE WEATHER - ie: Think "hot day in July..."
The intent here is to NOT force anyone to the store, but hopefully use one
of the "nice dinner" outfits you are probably bringing anyways. By going
the Light/Dark route, we *should* look like we belong together when done
without being formal about it.
+++4.2 Badges
The badge committee is:
Coordinator/Designer Keith McClary <mcc...@alp061.alp.ford.com>.
Artist/Designer Paula Giffey <pgi...@ida.org>
Button Production Svsr Janet Joyce <7650...@CompuServe.COM>
We have decided on a 2 1/2" Badge-A-Minit format. There will be a space
for your email address on it.
Paula Giffey <pgi...@ida.org> and Keith McClary are finishing up the
artwork now and Keith will produce the blanks. You will have to fill
in your email address later at the convention. We could probably use a
calligraphic (or good penmanship) writer or two to help out at the
convention.
Janet Joyce <7650...@CompuServe.COM> will be bringing the materials
to the convention, and we will produce them there. They will be produced
at cost (somewhere around $1), so hopefully everyone will get one.
*** TIME AND LOCATION FOR OBTAINING YOUR BADGE IS TBD *** We'll see what
we can work out with the BarberShopper's Shop. It would be nice to set
up either there or at the Registration area. SEE THE BULLETIN BOARD
AT THE CONVENTION. We'll try to corner a little slice for IHC.
The current design will be for the Pittsburgh convention only. If it is
decided by the group to adopt this as the official logo, we will keep it.
Suggestions for ASCII-Art logos are still being solicited. Please email
them as soon as possible for consideration. Multiple ASCII-Art "highway",
"staff", and "barberpole" variants are under consideration, along with
computer references such as "tractor feed paper". Current opinion is
leaning more towards something that could be somewhat duplicatable in
ASCII-Art (vs graphics image) as it looks more "computerey" and can be
used in .signature files.
+++4.3 Giveaways/Promos
Nothing for Pittsburgh due to time, but we may end up designing a "smiley
quartet" address label sticker or some such thing for placing on the
registration badges for the next one.

+++5.0 Convention Schedule/Issues
+++5.1 Meetings - Practice place(s) and times
6/15/94:
>From David Melville <melv...@trg.trglink.com>:
> It looks like the meeting time will be between 5:00 and 6:00 on Friday.
> The place has yet to be confirmed; it will either be at Bay Area Metro's
> rehearsal spot or the Lobby of the Headquarters hotel. I'll let you know
> ASAP. This puts it during the "free time" between the World harmony
> Jamboree and the Quartet Semi-Finals. Some districts, including FWD, are
> having some sort of a "spiel" during that time; however, Gary Bolls & I
> thought this time might work best for most. Besides, even if you can't
> make the "rehearsal", we still hope you will sing with us on Saturday.
UPDATE 6/22/94:
>From David Melville <melv...@trg.trglink.com>:
> Well, there's good news and bad news....
> The bad news is that, between the Phoenicians and Bay Area Metro, we were
> unable to secure a gathering/rehearsal location because their rooms are not
> available at the time we need them. Also, Gary Bolles and I, along with any
> other IHCers from FWD have a conflict with our originally planned meeting
> time of 5-6 p.m. because the FWD is having a pep rally at that time.
>
> The GOOD news is that 4-5 p.m. on Friday IS available (we'll just sneak into
> the rally "stylishly" late), and we will simply meet at the lobby of the
> Headquarters hotel. Actually the HQ is probably a better location since it
> will be the most convenient for all.
>
> To recap, the meeting time and place is FRIDAY, JULY 8, FROM 4-5 P.M. IN THE
> LOBBY OF THE HEADQUARTERS HOTEL.
>
> In the event we are able to finagle a room at the HQ hotel (or thereabouts)
> there will be a sign posted in the HQ lobby, emblazoned with "IHC" to catch
> your attention. While this is unlikely, look around for the sign if you
> don't see a gathering in the lobby.
+++5.2 Current performance schedule/locations
Performance(s): I'm hoping to get us a spot in the Chordatorium on
Saturday night. If there is enough interest, perhaps we could also visit a
few of the larger hospitality suites later on. Again, details will be
forthcoming.
**** ATTENTION ALL ***IHC*** 'NETTERS! ****
>From David Melville <melv...@trg.trglink.com>:
> It would be useful to find out the whereabouts of the various district
> hospitality rooms for our Saturday night roundabout. If any of you are
> privee to such information, please scoot it my way ASAP.
[ED NOTE: Please send a copy to me too, for inclusion here... - Keith]
+++5.3 "Headquarters" Room / Coordinator contact at the convention
TBD
+++5.4 Contact names/hotels - General list
See the "Roster" published separately
+++5.5 Bulletin board/Announcements posting location
One of three locations will be used (currently still trying to get
permission):
a) the HQ lobby
b) the Convention Registration Area,
c) the Information desk at the Convention Center, or
d) the bulletin board at the Convention Center.
(a) or (b) are the most likely areas now.
We will try to get a "slice" of a bulletin board in the main Registration
Area for IHC announcements, or set up an easel. One way or another, look
for an IHC sign. If possible, a sign with our logo (the Pole-Scroll logo
posted about a month ago) will be made. It is still in progress.
Can someone please bring thumbtacks, and string for this purpose?
+++5.6 Supply locations (ie badges)
Badges - We were going to try to arrange for leaving all Badge materials
at the BarberShopper's Shop in the Headquarters Hotel, but since
we are now going to make them as we go we are unsure of logistics...
SEE THE IHC BULLETIN BOARD IN THE REGISTRATION AREA FOR MORE INFO
Music - Contact David Melville at his hotel.
+++5.7 Internet Reporter contact at convention
Internet Reporter Janet Joyce <7650...@CompuServe.COM>
Internet Assistant John Rettenmayer <jr...@gemini.nlu.edu>
Janet is coordinating the typing assistance schedule. If you wish to be a
volunteer to help keyboard/compile the stuff for uploading, see her for a
time slot.
+++5.8 Social events
We have a volunteer to case the area for a possibility of having a dinner
on Thursday at 5PM, place TBD:
> From: e...@imagers.k3ejg.sai.com (Gene L. Fegely)
> Subject: IHC Dinner
>
> I will be arriving in Pittsburgh on July 1st, Friday evening. If
> there has been interest shown for a dinner, let me know and I will
> find a place. My suggestion is for Thursday at five pm.
(We did...)
> My access to e-mail is probably none until Friday night, but my daughter
> is <lm...@cmu.edu> and can accept and forward to me. Use gene fegely
> as the subject.
>
> gene l fegely <e...@imagers.k3ejg.sai.com> or 7005...@Compuserve.com
Nothing was definite as of "press time" today. If it does happen, details
will be announced on the IHC Bulletin Board [segment]. Signs, last minute
changes or additions, cost, and possibly a signup sheet *MAY* appear on
(at least) one of:
a) the HQ lobby
b) the Convention Registration Area, or
c) the Information desk/bulletin board at the Convention Center.

In Pittsburgh, I do have access (through my daughter at CMU) to a
direct connection to internet. We can probably get a temporary address, or
use her terminal(s). I will be in PGH on July 2, so things can be set up
any time after I get there. I am not too familiar as to how it is done, but
she or her husband will help, I'm sure. FYI, her address is
<lm...@cmu.edu> (Laura McGinnis).
My access to e-mail [is now] none until Friday night [7/1], but my daughter
is <lm...@cmu.edu> and can accept and forward to me. Use gene fegely
