I would say the more sport-touring bikes like the Honda VFR 750 or
Suzuki Katana.

I found the CBR600F3 and F4 to be extremely comfortable (compared to a
GSX600R and a TL1000S). But I never rode them for more than 50 miles at a
time.
If your definition of crotch rocket extends to sport touring bikes, try the
VFR, the CBR1100XX and the Triumph Sprint.

Of the genuine supersport crotch rockets the F4/CBR929 are pretty
comfy. Some say the ZX9 is as well but I have yet to fit my long legs
into the tank cutouts properly. If you're short and have really long
arms (IOW built like a chimpanzee) you'll be very comfy on most any
sportbike.

Well first, lets get rid of the term "crotch-rocket". Gawd I hate that.
I much prefer "sport bike". That aside the best "sport bike" or
sport-type bike would be the BMW K1200RS. Also as others have mentioned
the ZX-12, CBR1100XX, GSX1300R Hayabusa, VFR, Suzuki Bandit and I'd be
the new '01 Yamaha Fazer will be pretty comfy. There are many bikes out
there. There seems to be a real push toward sport-touring these days.

"Sport-Bike" suits me well. Thanks for the info.

Lately, I have been riding a friend's '94 FZR600. While the power is
good, it really isn't a very comfortable bike. Since I'm not an old
man (yet), I am really thinking of getting my own sport bike. I just
wonder if there is something out there that is new or almost new that
is fairly comfy with decent handling and good performance.

Right now I am leaning towards the CBR600F4. Seemed comfy at the
dealer, but that doesn't really give the feel of a long ride. The last
thing I want to do is spend the money on something and end up not
liking it.

Thanks for the info, and keep it coming. I don't think I'll be getting
a BMW or Triumph though. Too rich for my blood.

If you want comfort and power you would go for the "standard" type ride
rather than a "sport bike". You will have pleanty of fun on any of the
new big dogs, ZXR, Bandir, Fazer, SV650 etc. If price is a concern I
would look for a well taken care of SV650. If its to mellow you can put
some slip ons on it. Take the winter and check out all the mags and then
purchare before the snow melts for the best price and be ready to ride in
the spring, unless of course you live in the south, then theres no off
season and prices are always premium :)

three 2000 bikes at once?! maybe price isn't your concern after all...

what's your definition of a "crotch rocket"? my friend calls his VFR800 a
"couch rocket", it's amazingly comfy. probably depends on your build too.

Duuuuuude[1] the F4 is the way to go if you want comfy 600. The FZR is
intentionally hard in the ergo dept. If you want something comfier
than that you'd need to look at the biggie bikes that displace 1000cc
or more. The ZX-6 (not ZX-6R) is also comfy if a tad dated. Supposedly
the ZX-6R is comfy as well but I find it lifts your legs up too high
on it's pegs. The F4 is the cadillac of the bunch. It's redesigned for
2001 which means you should either get the new model or a scorching
deal on a leftover 2000.

[1] I use that to build the reader's confidence in my assertions.

I found the ZX-6R, F4, Triumph TT600, and Honda CBR900RR to all have
similar ergos. I was surprised at how comfortable they were once I got
acclimated.

Not all BMWs or Triumphs are expensive. While BMW does have some
pricey models, most Triumphs are fairly inexpensive. If you have a
less-than-perfect driving record (such as myself) and add in the
insurance cost, Triumphs can actually be *much* less expensive than
Japanese bikes. The price difference between my Sprint and a VFR
amounted to about half of the one-year insurance premium difference.

Or if you're a dumbass like me and live in a "insurance no-no" zone,
like NYC or Jersey. As they say in the old country, "Oy!" If my
insurance company is going to do THAT to me, the least it could do is
give me a kiss and send flowers afterwards.

Is your VTR a 600? That's what the poster wanted.
