Ok, I have limited my choice of a two-stroke bike between a
Yamaha RD500 YPVS (RZ500 YPVS or RZV500R)
Honda NS400R
I have dropped the Suzuki RGV250 Gamma, Yamaha RD350 (RZ350) due to the
lack of power. Also dropped the Suzuki RG500 Gamma, because Suzuki just
can't build motorcycles. A '86 RD500 is better than a '89 RG500 Gamma.
Of course, I can get both only used.
I could get a '88 NS400R and a '86 RD500. I have heard that '88 RD500
are available in germany but have not seen one offered.
Honda NS400R:
3 cylinders, 72 horse-power, 163 kg
RD500 YPVS:
4 cylinders, 88 horse-power, water-cooled, YPVS system, 199 kg
Can anyone tell me if the Honda is water-cooled? Does it have an exhaust
system like the Yamaha YPVS?
Someone from Canada mailed my some time ago he owns a NS400R and has made
lot's of changes to it so it's faster now than a RG500 Gamma. But I lost
his mail address.
Anyone any recommendations to either bike? What tyres are best? What
are the best pipes? What should be changed. What is top speed?

If you figure an RZ350 is underpowered, you are sadly mistaken...Come
up and ride my roads and I'll leave your gamma (Gawd what a heap-o-junk!)
nursing it's thrown rods in the weeds.
The RZ350 *might* be the finest sporting bike ever built, I'd strongly
reconsider, was I you.
BTW, there is probably more aftermarket junk for the 350 than the 500,
because up here in Canada, we ahve a really dedicated RZ350 racing group.
Or try calling SPEC II racing, they advertise in the mags...
BTW, no matter what you hear, *don't* buy a Gamma, they explode like pintos
if you miss a shift, and they're a pain in the ass. Also an Ex500 handles
better.
Flames to Dev/null...Unless your profanity is original *and* funny.
Sorry, I missed all the smileys after the gamma flame.
Are you joking?? 500 Gammas are fast, light (roughly 390lb wet) and handle
great. Generally better acceleration than gsxr750's, and probably better
handling, but that's hard for me to say. I've been on both bikes at the
dragstrip, but not a *racetrack*.
So your RZ can do over 125 mph in the quarter???
OK OK maybe you didn't mean acceleration, but I'm not buying that explode like
pinto's crack either. At least I hope not, 'cause I've missed a couple of
shifts on one....
Early '80's gp bikes used this motor for over 130hp didn't they???
BTW, I also thought that in stock form, a gamma was faster than a rd500,
at least the rd500 in my neighborhood....:-)
flame hard & flame fast, I won't be here long..

(speaking of which did you part-out the Kat?)

As far as handling, and yes, even acceleration go, the Gamma has a slight
advantage in top end power, and a DISadvantage in handling. I don't know
if it *is* heavier...It surely *feels* heavier. The Gamma, at least when
I nearly bought one, also costs almost 1800$ more (canadian). That 1800
bought a *lot* of interesting aftermarket stuff.
As for the exploding bit: Gamma engines have that habit...I know this because
it has happened to two friends, and has also been documented in the mags.
I think Cycle Canada actually lunched *TWO* of them...One to a cracked rod.
Face up to it: Suzuki doesn't know how to build a two stroke...But you gotta
love the old GS750, man what a machine! I bought a 78, and could not believe
the quality, for that year...Amazing.
The RZ500 is okay, but a *real* handful...In the canyons it would be a blast
but day to day riding is a bit stress intensive. It does not have a power
band quite so much as a binary horsepower switch.
BTW, your remark about GP reliability has no connection to reality...GP guys
tear their motors down *much* more often than is possible for us street squids.
Or do you have a 15 man team and tractor rig out with you on your sunday rides?
Charles
.
Right :-) but on the track. The two-stroke is for my private use.
>(speaking of which did you part-out the Kat?)
I sold the (broken) Katana to someone who want's to rebuild all the stuff.

Right. I won't go with the RG500 Gamma.

Had an RZ 350. Very reliable, fast fun bike. Used to do these most
outrageous feet-up 1st gear powerslides around corners... Oh sorry.
No it was a real stone. Not fast at all. :-)
Sold it last year with 12,300 miles. Sorry to se it go, but I must
admit, what I have now I like a lot more.

43 horsepower at the rear wheel. Good for 115 to 118 mph. Last year
here was '85.
A set of Toomey Pipes would net you about 52 hp. Don't know what
happens to the top end there, though. But they'd cut about a half
second off your 1/4 mile time.
The RZ500 is definitely not the fastest >350 two-stroke about...my NS400
when it was stock would out accelerate and out run an RZ500. The Gamma
had a little acceleration and some top end on the NS. Now, however, the
storey is a little different...with some modifications, my NS now out
accelerates and out runs _any_ RG500 I've come across except for one
which was radically modified. My NS was able to outrun a few RS250's a
couple of years ago on the track.
Now if I can just graft my RS barrels onto the NS, fit up some pipes...

Mr. Evans,
You probably don't care if you are in my kill file or not. You may
not know what a kill file is, but please act on the following ASAP:
1) Posts should contain more words than abstract art. Do not embed
your posts in a field of > characters.
2) I am fed up with you shouting at us; I assure you that the line
from Australia is quite clear, and there is no need to amplify your
voice. Use lower case.
3) Not only are you loud, but you are shouting garbage. Don't post
unless you have something to say that others may want to read. You
have yet to produce anything other than noise.
4) Don't bother to flame me unless you heed 1-3 first, because I
won't hear you. You will be in my kill file. This is not an honour.
Not even Rups is in my kill file.
5) Don't bother with excuses. See (4).
Alternatively, you could sod off. That too would be an acceptable
conclusion from my point of view, and would save me a few bytes of
disk space and everyone else some bandwidth.

The NS400 would probably be the best bet, as it's fast (but not a lot faster
than an RD350f2) and handles really well (some yank mag voted it the best
handling bike ever a few years back). It _is_ water cooled, and has Honda's
first YPVS rip-off, ATAC (Automatic Torque Amplification Chamber (?)) on the
forward facing 2 cylinders only. The only problem I can remember is that the
engine is just an overbored (hence only 400cc) MVX250 (Jap only), so the
middle piston has been known to sieze, and being Nicasil coated (hot shit in
those days...) cannot be rebored.
Performance Bikes a looong time ago featured an RD500 bored to 730cc, ie throughto the water jacket and then re-sleeved, if you want just power, I guess this
is it! Try for an RZ500, as it had an ally frame, so weighed less.
Enjoy!!
Yeah, right. That's why Randy Hawkins has won the national enduro
title on a RMX 250 for the last 2 or 3 years.
Or maybe you meant "Suzuki doesn't know how to build *multi-cylinder,
pavement-only* 2-strokes :):):)

Sorry, but they can't keep up with the CBR600's (the _old_ ones) at the track.
