Hello;

I have seen some "snippets" of information on this subject, but nothing
concrete. Did someone make a kit that would allow you to mount a vw engine to
a bmw tranny? Anyone know of what I speak? Help!

No.

I'd have to say "You're Wrong!" Someone (name escapes me at the moment)
just posted to the BMW list regarding having just done this (put a pancake
4 in a /2 frame).

I don't know anything about how to make one, but I remember seeing one in Sturgis in
1972!

Back in the mid 70s I worked at a Kawasaki shop and some guy stopped in
with a BMW that had a VW bettle engine in it. To this day I still don't understand
why, but he got a lot of attention. I looked at the bike and it was the same VW
flat four engine that my mom had in her 69 bug.

There was an adaptor available for the older BMWs (R-series) back in the
70's. One of our sidecar racers had one set up that way.

It has been done. There are several of them out there. There was an
outfit in Texas that made some swell pieces to do the conversion. They had
a beautiful exhaust manifold and a very nice bell housing.

A neighbor of mine had one when I lived in Nashville. He had a VW motor in
a /2 frame. He was a welder by trade and had made several additional mods
like adding a Ural sidecar with a gas tank under the boat fed by a fuel
pump to the main tank with a switch.

All you gotta do is spread the frame about 3 to 4 inches and lengthen it
by 4 to 6 inches (I forget the particulars). The crankcase on a BMW
accommodates TWO crank throws. The crankcase on a VW motor accommodates
TWO crank throws, too. Each throw on the VW motor has width enough for two
big ends, however. The VW case is about two rod widths longer than the BMW
case. The trick is in the trans mounting adapter (bell housing).

He took me for a ride in it and there is NFW the motor is "too heavy."
The bike tried to jump around the sidecar every time he up shifted. That
pup will FLY.

I dunno if he is still around. But you might call information for Donelson,
Tennessee (615) and ask for a number for Hiram Wilson. Everyone calls him
Bill. He probably still has the rig. Tell him I said, "Hello." And tell
him I finally got my Ural project on the road.

But why go through all the trouble of fitting a VW engine in a BMW chassis when you can buy an Amazonas? Still has the original gearbox with a reverse. Comes in handy when you have to park the 550 lbs monster.

Cheers, Bjorn.

It was once a common conversion to install an early VW engine in a
'55-69 BMW chassis. It required moving the engine-mount tabs on the
frame, an adapter plate for the gearbox, and slight modification to the
Earles forks to clear the front of the engine. Also, an exhaust system
had to be fabricated, and electrical bits figured out.

The pieces to do this conversion have not been manufactured for many
years.

I have 2 of these machines. All this stuff about some 4-6 inch
extention is CRAP. The frame is extended only 1 1/2 inches to
accomodate the adapater that mates the VW motor to the /2 taansmission.
These are very usable machines not some kind of freak crap like the
Chevy poereed Harleys. The /2 transmission is internally modified to
overdrive it to mate the RPM of the VW to the BMW final drive. If
anyone wants proof send me a SASE and I'll send a (poor) pic of my
latest one 1800cc, dual Dellortos, 009 dist etc etc. I have all the
parts frame/trans/adapter/generator stand to build yet another.
Oh...the performance . Really only about as good as my car.
