ps. Just now I Googled for the meaning of the lyrics of this
old Scottish song and realized that for many decades I've
misunderstood it. I had assumed that the first word ("should")
meant "if", "in case" or "in the event that..."

However, it appears that the intended meaning is more like
"Is it recommended that...?", "Are we to be advised that...")
or "Is it appropriate that..."

"Auld lang syne" translates literally as "old long since",
more or less meaning "days gone bye". So the song is asking
the question: "Is it advisable that old acquaintances be forgotten
and never recalled to mind?" Well, there are a few people IRL
whom I wish I could forget (but can't) and others I wish I could
remember, but by now their names and faces are just a vague blur,
and of course Reeksters whose names (or pseudo names) I know
but their faces not at all. Maybe next year when I hope to go
traveling I can meet some IRL.

Anyway, happy 2010 everyone.
