Having worn my Shoei GRV helmet for five years, it's looking a little
worse for the wear although it fits well, and having been warned about
helmets losing their effectiveness over time, I decided to get a new
one. Quite a bit of looking around and pricing left me with the
decision to get a new Shoei, because of the fit. Having decided that, I
pored over specifications and decided upon the X-9 for its light weight,
excellent ventilation, and shield design.
The best price I could find for an X-9 was from Performance Accessories,
for US$281.95. The color -- gloss black. Other solid colors were the
same price, with graphic-designed helmets going for a considerably
higher price. Other mail-order vendors came close but not as low. Let
me give a brief rundown of the features of the X-9:
Fiberglass/kevlar/carbon shell, light weight
Wraparound shield with quick release system
Excellent, fully controllable ventilation system
Included optional breath guard
One-lever fog elimination system, allows infinite preset
I tried on the X-9 as soon as I received it. The fit of the helmet was
almost perfect, not too tight at first like my GRV had been. The helmet
interior is soft cloth and very cushy. Overall fit is snug but not
tight. The face shields (I added a smoke in addition to the standard
clear) have no distortion. Like all Shoei faceshields, the lift tab is
on the lower left side of the shield. Peripheral vision is good but not
quite as good as the GRV.
On the road: noise level, one of my greatest concerns with the new
helmet, was something of a limited success. While noticeably quieter
than my GRV, I still get wind noise beginning at about 55 mph, and it
increases after that time. I am starting to feel that my ideal quiet
helmet does not exist on this planet. With all vents open, airflow
through the helmet is very good. I can actually feel the cool air
flowing inside, something I've never felt with any other helmet.
One nice feature that Shoei included is a little snap at the end of the
fastening strap. Like many Shoei helmets, the X-9 uses a D-ring
fastener setup. On my GRV, I had strap-flap and would need to tuck the
end of the strap up and over the fastened strap. On the X-9, the snap
attaches the end of the strap quickly and easily to the D-ring, leaving
a small loop which does not flap.
Changing visors on this helmet is very easy. Just open the visor, pull
down on the spring-loaded tabs at each side of the visor attachment, and
the visor pops right off. Attaching a new visor is as easy as pressing
the visor attachment points into the sockets firmly, until the tabs snap
into place. I tried removing and reattaching a visor with the helmet
on. The first part was easy but reattaching was a little tricky, the
largest problem was getting the attachment points lined up. With
practice this should be an easy task.
Is the X-9 worth the price? So far I think so, although I really would
like a silent helmet. The helmet paint is flawless and has a clear
coat, which should prove durable. The X-9 meets both DOT and Snell-90
certifications.

I'm with you on wanting a quiet helmet. The motorcycle press rates the
Arai and Shoei line as being the quietest, but my newly-purchased Arai
Quantum/s is just as noisy as my old Bell Snell Sport at speed. I can put
my hands against the top of the Arai's shield and things quiet down
considerably. It seems that the fit between the top of the face shield
and the seal is the most critical. I adjusted the shield pivots to
tighten the clearance between it and the sides of the seal, at the expense
of opening up a small (1 mm) gap at the top of the shield and the noise
increased markedly from the stock pivot setting. So I adjusted it back to
where the seal on the top is good at the expense of big gaps at the sides.
It seems that the helmet makers need only make a sealing ring with a few
mm of "squish" to insure a tight seal when the face shield is closed, thus
making things as quiet as possible.

I also like quiet helmets. I've got an Arai Quantum S on order; after I've
used it for a few days, I'll let you know if it's a candidate to be your ideal

I've also owned a GRV for the last five or so years. It was and still
is an excellent helmet. I decided to purchase an X-9 about a month ago
because I wanted to up date my helmet and I stuck with Shoei because
of the fit.

I find that the X-9 seems noiser that my GRV. It seems that there is
less padding near the ears so I can heard more stuff, such as wind
noise. The seal around the visor is excellent (much better than the
GRV), but I find the lack of a leather piece on the chin spoiler allows
alot of air to rush up the face... maybe that's the wind noise I hear.
To get that quiet helmet that I was hoping for, I just use ear
plugs. Oh well, nobody said life was easy.

I like the helmet alot but I do have a slight problem with it. Unlike
your helmet, I opted for the extremely expensive Russell replica. The
design is incredible but there are a couple of flaws in the sticker
job. They don't paint the design on (it appears), but they apply a
sticker design on it. One of the designs has cracked... fortunately,
it is in the slot under the visor so it can only be seen on close
inspection. But, you'd think, a $1000 helmet would be perfect...
that's life.
Next time I'll just buy a plain Shoei or one with a less complicated
design... live and learn.

Woof! $1000? in what country?? The X-9 Russell is typically mail-ordered
for about $450 (such as Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse at $449.95).
I have the X-9 Norick and the graphics are really flawless (uh, until
I dropped my helmet and nicked it a bit, that is).
The only problem I've had with mine is that cool little strap clip that Pete
talked about decided to "exit the vehicle" after a couple of months.

What do you expect?? It's not airtight and there's air rushing buy at 50+
mph. Motorcyclist did a review some years back. Even the quietest
helmet lets in about 102 DB of noise. That's what ear plugs are for.

For a Shoei it is, but nothing beats the system on the Arai Quantum
and Signets. Replace a shield in 20 seconds while wearing winter gloves
with the helmet on. No levers, springs, or tabs.

too bad the face shields aren't shatterproof. Meets VESA specs for
optical quality, but "ANSI" doesn't appear anywhere on an X-9.

damn, i doubt even Russell's cost that much. You paid about $500+ too
much for the one's I saw (yeah, the X9).

i too got the black X9. Paint is NOT, NOT very durable. Lots of
scratches and one dime-sized chip from the rear (near the Snell
sticker). Not dropped, either.
Next time I get the white for SURE. MUCHO COOLER (temperature, that
is) than that black which (honestly) is too hot to pick up in direct
sunlight sometimes. Ouch! MSF guy said black lids are 40degrees hotter
inside than white in sunshine. I believe it.
And the white X9 Norick looks sweeter than the Russell. Unless you're
on a green Kawi, I guess.

Oops... forgot to mention that this was in Canadian dollars. The
exchange rate was about $1.40 Cdn to get one US dollar. With shipping
cost, taxes plus tariffs... it would have come out to over a grand. A
friend told me that I could ship a helmet across the border duty free
because it was considered safety equipment. Does anyone know if this
is true?
Anyways, the bonus of buying from the dealer was the fact that I was
able to try an X-9 on before buying. I wasn't able to try the exact
helmet... only a solid colour X-9. Good thing, I was under the
assumption that they fit like the X-8... wrong! I almost bought the
wrong size.

I wish I could. All the shops up here quote the retail price for their

mail-order place in Canada with decent prices went out of business...
not really, they just stopped mail ordering and opened up a shop to

Anyways, I'm starting to complain so I'll just shut up.

For David Fong:
I remember you mentioning that the X-9 does not have the leather chin
curtain that you had on your GRV. I noticed this also. It is not
currently a problem as I have a Quiet Rider installed on my X-9, but I
do know that Shoei has a separate chin curtain for the X-8/9 series
helmets. Dennis Kirk carries this item for 11.99.

To be honest, I expected the helmet to be much quieter. Not approaching

Apparently there's no helmet which is as quiet as I'd like mine to be.

I'll take your word for it. I rarely have to make the switch, as I'll
only carry a spare shield when on a trip. And the X-9's time of change
is a vast improvement from the GRV / RF-200 method of sideplate removal.
I suppose Arai has a patent on their particular method, correct?

Yeah, yeah. I'm not trying to bitch (too much) about the noise; I just
wanted to point out that my expectations of noise level were much
greater.

I had to do major surgery to the cheek pads to relieve

the trick so that the helmet is comfortable all day now.

Just want to add here that the latest issue of MotorCyclist has a helmet

outscoring the next highest (from Arai, which also received an A+).
I already loved my X-9, but seeing an independent review rate it so highly
didn't hurt.
What really surprised me was the complete trashing they gave to the Simpson
helmets. All I really knew was that they were expensive, which is usually
a pretty good indicator for quality so I wanted to check them out before
I bought a helmet but couldn't find them anywhere. Now I think I know why.

And the clincher is that we shouldn't have to, especially if we shell
out like $300-$400 for a helmet.....the chin curtain and breath guards
should be standard equipment.....
: What's wrong with taping a plastig bag round the base of the helmet. Wroks for

There's nowt wrong with that, it all depends on your fashion
preference. With teh chin curtains, they are always attached to the
helmet so you never have to worry about putting em on, with the
garbage bags, you have to carry duct tape and scissors....and plus you
have to ride around looking like an EvilBagBikerScum instead of just a
regular EvilBikerScum.
You have to admit, us Yanks are nothign if not fashionabable.......
???????I tape mine on and it stays for about 6 months befor the plastic gets
worn out round the base of the helmet from putting it down, throwing it on the
floor, skidding down the road on my head, etc.
So I use the tape once or twice a year......

Sshhh!!!! Don't tell him I told you, but he really does have a plastic bag
stuck onto the bottom of his helmet. He's also used resin to block up the
vent holes in it as well.

Bob, a friend's RF-200 has a breath guard in it, and it's quite
different from the ones in my GRV and X-9. It's kind of a foam, not the
leather panel, and it doesn't close off the lower face area very well.

I've seen TWO types of breath guards for the RF200s, the foam one you
mention above (which I think looks horrendously ugly, I don't even
think this foam one is a Shoei accessoyr), and the leather panel type
that is found on teh X-8s and X-9s, I have the leather panel type, and
tho it looks cool, it doens't relaly do much to prevent shield
fogging.
