Roadracer Donald Jacks was killed over the weekend. Donald was ranked
6th in the nation at the time of his death which was caused by a
bicyclist pulling in front of his bike on a dark country road early
last Saturday. Everyone who knew Donald, knew him to be a fiercly
competitive racer on the track but one of the nicest people you could
ever want to meet. He was always accessable to his fans and was a
regular part of our Sunday rides when his race schedule allowed.

His "home track" of Moroso in West Palm Beach will never seem the same
without him around. #59 will be sorely missed. I suppose there is
some small consolation in that he died doing what he loved
doing...riding a bike.

BTW, the bicyclist who darted out in front of him was also killed and a
passenger on Don's bike was seriously injured and remains in the
hospital.

Godspeed Donald, you will be missed!

Can anybody shed more light on this?

Wow. I can't believe it! This is a tragedy. Donal Jacks was a real
up-and-comer. I remember the fierce competition between him and Jason
Pridmore at Loudon last year for top privateer in the Supersport class.

First Danny Hamel and now this... It's turning into a bummer of a year for the
motorcycle racing community.

According to the Orlando Sentinel:

"Donald Jacks, 25, a former motorcycle road racing champion, died when
his 1994 Suzuki hit a bicycle riden by James Kaufman, 21, of St. Cloud
(Florida). Both men were travelling east at 3am...about a mile west of
St. Cloud. Kaufman turned in front of the speeding motorcycle,
according to the Fla. Highway Patrol. A passenger on the motorcycle,
Matthew Maddox, 23, of St. Cloud, was in critical condition at Orlando
Regional Medical Center."

The funeral was today. Over 300 people attended including Don's
Yoshimura Suzuki team mates, Jamie James, and lots of racers from Don's
home track at Moroso. Henry DeGouw, Don's manager, gave the eulogy.
Information that I've heard says that the bicyclist was stopped on an
overpass and then pulled out in front of Donald's bike.

^^^^^^^^
Is this a fact? Was Donald "speeding" or is this just another newspaper
superlative to add color.

This is a tragic loss.
