No. It's just that the extra 5 points weren't worth the potential
disaster. Earlier in the year, Rossi would have gone for the win to
teach Stoner a lesson as much as anything. But today it wasn't worth it.
What was amazing was just how fast the two of them were going all race
long.

YUP, it was a two man show, all other guys were more or less spectators.
Even Pedrosa as the third had a huge gap to the lead. The german
commentator on eurosport said, last year nine riders fit into a 22s gap.

Beside this, I think Stoner has this year a clear demonstration where he
really stands, so he better shut up for next season. I still have his
words in my ears how good he will be, and that Rossi's time is over...

I don't think Rossi could have passed Stoner - every time he made a
move it put him on a very bad line for the exit. This, in a race
where Bridgestone farked up by bringing two sets of tires that
assumed temperatures that were 20 deg (F) warmer than what they
were. The front two were sliding quite a bit.

Agreed, almost. I think Rossi was pushing very hard and wanted to win,
he hasn't won here since... '05? And one of his favorite tracks. If he
really was thinking championship he probably would have backed off
earlier, after Pedrosa had been left in the dust, and if he was to win
it would have had to have been one of those high-risk sleazeball moves,
shoving up the inside and forcing Stoner way wide, maybe taking them
both out. Rossi clearly wanted the win, although he probably didn't push
it to the absolute limit like he might have had that been Lorenzo he was
racing, or if the championship was really riding on the outcome.

Overall a classic 800 race, not a single change of position in the top 5
or even a serious attempt from lap 5 on, in the end nothing contested on
the last lap until you get down to 7th. The 250 race was more
interesting in many respects, although a bit of a farce - Simoncelli's
teammate ends the race with a crash right when it maximized the points
changes in Marco's favor, now in 2nd and only 12 points back, which
would have been 16 a lap later; 250 championship heir apparent Bautista
crashes once again, is now essentially out of the hunt, and the
absurdity of him getting a factory team ride in MotoGP, even if at
Suzuki, mounts even further.

And of course Hayden has now achieved the JIS Trifecta, having now had
races ruined in the first corners by getting hit from behind by ex-250
Japanese, Italian AND Spanish riders...

What no typical "nicky caused that wreck, what is Ducati thinking?"
I thought for sure you would blame Nicky for that even though it was clearly
Lorenzo's fault.

Right. If Lorenzo wins both races remaining, and Rossi finishes 4th
in Sepang and is DNF in Valencia, he still wins the championship. Other
scenarios left to the reader...

I'm not so sure about the "teach a lesson" thing. I think it was a
smart race on both sides. I was more impressed that Stoner (he REALLY
needs a "stage" name) was able to handle the pressure. Good result all
round.
Don't get me wrong, I fully buy into the psychological side if racing
and competitive sports.
