A month or so ago there was a discussion here regarding which insurance
companies excluded racers from coverage and which didn't. I want to get
some accidental death and dismemberment insurance to cover me while racing
so can someone tell me the name of a company that will cover racers in the
US.

I work for the University of Pittsburgh and am having trouble getting an
answer to this question from the university regarding their coverage and
I've got a race this weekend (Road Atlanta).

I have Supplemental Life Insurance, and also Accidental Daily Hospital
Confinement and Intensive Care Insurance through J. C, Penney Life
Insurance Company. Niether policy specifically excludes racing as an
activity, and I've already put in a claim on the Accidental Injury policy,
without a problem. Both policies were offfered to me (seperately) by
credit card companies I deal with (Chase Manhattan Bank & Best Buy).

The Accidental Injury Hospital Confinement one is the one most valuable to
me. I have HMO insurance through my job, which pays 100%. The J. C.
Penney policy pays me (directly) $350 per visit to the emergency room for
ANY injury, $350 a day for hospital confinement, and the payout doubles to
$700 a day if I'm in intensive care. I wadded my FZR600 in a 100+ m.p.h.
crash at Nelson Ledges in 1995, which put me in intensive care for 3 days
with a severe concussion; the HMO insurance paid the hospital bill, and the
J.C. Penney policy paid for the crash damage. Not a bad deal.

You can reach them at:

J. C. Penney Life Insurance Company
2700 West Plano Parkway
Plano, TX 75075-8200

Their claim phone number is (800) 692-5246. I don't have a main number for
them; you may be able to get some info by calling the claim number.
