Time of race: 1:11:21.194 (length because of a red flag)
Margin of victory: 0:01.345
Winner's average speed: 53.990 mph
Winner's average lap time: 2:27.626
Stevens lost his motor on the way to Turn 4, and crashed on his own oil.
Edwards, Gray and Hale were behind him and all crashed too. A few laps
later Ashmead joined them. Luckily no one on the scene was hurt by
Ashmead's bike. Ashmead did injure his foot, however. Details were not
known by the time I left.
The red flag was brought out after Ashmead crashed, so the track could
be cleaned up.
Pablo Real also crashed, but I don't recall where. I just heard
mention of "No, Real was not transported away."
Merkel had taken third from James in Turn 2 of the last lap, but James
came back with a very gutsy and likely dangerous move in the final
corner. He went in so hard that he nearly crashed into the front-straight
wall, but he got the position.
Kling's Harley-Davidson gave up on the last lap, making it to Turn 10
but no farther.
Apart from the starts, which James led, Picotte led the whole distance.
Current top-10 in points (I have the top 51 actually, along with all
their finishes to date, so feel free to request specifics for someone):

11 69 Jon Cornwell
There were many crashes, and two were serious. On lap 10, Taylor went
off at Turn 9. The ambulance was at the scene until lap 18. He was
transported from the race track for neck X-rays. On lap 13, Fosgate
(or Fugate if you believe the grid sheet) went off at Turn 6. He broke
a leg and possibly broke an arm too. Naturally, he was transported to
hospital.
The Aprilia of d'Alusio sputtered on the last lap, giving second place
to Sorensen.

Higbee and Zampach swapped the lead I don't know how many times.
Often three or four times per lap. Yates joined them in the second
half, and even had the lead briefly. On the last lap he got snookered
by lapped traffic in Turn 10, then braked too hard on the way into 11
and dumped it.
The finish, as you can guess, was side by side.

OK, you caught us...but we had fun! If you read the results carefully, it
doesn't take much to figure out that we were most likely DFL of the bikes that
were still running and on the track at the checkered. OK, so at the rider
change we had to adjust the chain and switch the shifting from upside down to
right side up (I like upside down, Kenny likes street bike pattern), but at
least we didn't have to add gas like the liter-bikes had to! I was fairly
slow, having never raced at Laguna, and I crashed in Friday's afternoon
practice, spent Saturday repairing the bike instead of practicing, and the bike
wouldn't shift during Sunday morning's practice, so...I had three whole laps of
practice. Also, my team (what little there was of it, but that's another
story) was waving and gesticulating and I thought they wanted me to pit, so I
did...they only wanted to let me know that they existed, so I went back out for
another three laps before pulling in with an exhausted brake hand. I could
have used at least one practice session and some contemplation time before the
race (Ken got 0 laps of practice, but has raced here for many years, before
they changed the track even, including last year's superbike race) to get going
something approaching fast I rode here once in '88 in California Superbike
School on a stock Ninja 600, which just doesn't prepare you for the way a
modified 750 connects the corners, and the track has changed a lot, especially
the corkscrew, which is rather wimpy (yeah, right) now as the exit is soooo
wide. I was told that I was doing 1:53's and Kenny was doing 1:43's. :-( I
still passed two people out on the track. Oh well, the track is a blast and
the corkscrew is a real trip. It's like running your bike into an elevator
that's busy falling down the shaft.
Mucho thanks to the NMP's and the corner workers (Butch and Gail, thanks!), who
are just the best in the world, I swear. Not only did they pick me up and dust
me off, but they also spotted me a couple of beers on Friday night. The AMA,
however, will be the death of us all. If we don't go bankrupt first lining
Roger's pockets.
It was a lousy-luck weekend, but I am smiling anyway.
a
Something interesting to note, that will undoubtly be discussed in the next
issue of _Uhlrich's World_ is that Magee was running the regular SS swingarm on
his RC-45, and Hale was also on his RC-30, but Smith was running a conventional
superbike-style (actually fairly thin arm section with a curved bracing section
above) swingarm on his RC-45! He beat Magee (Hale was an oil-victim), so maybe
he knows something they don't?!
