Today at the WERA road races at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia,
Jeff Atwell broke the track record with a speedy 1:19.54 lap time
around the 2 mile, 10 turn course.

His times were consistent. He also posted 1:19.55 and 1:19.56 lap times
during the same race.

Not bad... 8^)

WHat kind of bike did he do it on???? A Ninja 250??? I would be _very_
impressed if that were the case!

Isn't it about time Herr Jeff moved on to Superbike?

That's about a 90MPH *average*. I'm impressed no matter
WHAT bike he did it on... ;-)

Some of the facts surrounding Jeff Atwell's new Summit Point record:
Yes, the record is now 1:19.54, and yes he did several laps in succes-
sion near that time. The old record was 1:20.07, set by Kurt Hall.

Jeff, a 35 year old DC area resident, set this record on a Mike
Langlois tuned GSXR 750. He was very excited, watch for the full
details in the next MARRC newsletter.

Unless I'm a blind fool (hey, watch it!), Jeff Atwell campaigns and
has campaigned for several years an FZR 600. He drags his knee, the peg, the
lowers, and sometimes even the pipe. You should see it sometime.

ESPN's motoworld show said it was a 250. Did not mention any brand names.
Someone posted that it would have to average 90mph. If it was a 250 then
I would think it would have to be a 2 stroke to go that fast. Anybody
know for sure?

That would be my guess. At the recent WERA Pro races at Road Atlanta, the
250cc GP bikes were consistently 3 seconds faster than the previous lap
record. I didn't catch the final new lap record, but I'd imagine it is in
the 1'24.5" area. The newly widened track and repaved track was also a major
factor in the fast lap times but in F-USA the 250cc bikes were outnumbering
the 4-strokes in the top ten.

Think Peace.

Please pass on my congratulations to Jeff (I don't make it up to SP
anymore.) For a little more background. Jeff and I were a low-dollar
team in 87. He ran consistant 1:22's on our Yellow GSXR750 back then.
He won every 750 and Open race he entered at SP (with the exception of
one time when it started raining mid-race- the slicks didn't work well).

Jeff loves to slide, which is good as Summit Point asphalt had no
traction. Watching him take turn 10 in at redline with the rear hung out
flattrack style is a treat, even if it made my heart jump into my throat
everytime he did it on _my_ bike.
