Any advice regarding this bike, almost all stock, 35,000 kms.
It has bags but no front shield.

I am a first time rider and buyer. The price is fitting into my budget.
I asked a buddy and he said "SHOVELHEAD, TROUBLEHEAD"??

Any comments appreciated.

To each their own. I personnally ride a shovel (74 FLH) and have for
years. They may be a little more work sometimes, but not neccesaarily
a "troublehead". If ya like to tinker a little bit and do your regular
maitenance, ( which you should be doing reguardless of what model it
is) I don't think you'll have much problems. Check the bike out good
before you buy it. Reguardless of what model it is, if the previous
owner trashed it, you don't want it. If things look good, buy a good
manual, find a shop closeby that will work on them (just in case, and a
lot of the new dealers won't touch them) and go for it.

Just my two cents worth...

Your buddy is an idiot then.

I have two. Rebuilt them both, and they're trouble free. I prefer them
to the Evo, but that's just me.

The bike is 18 years old and even new Harleys are high maintenance, so
if you can turn a wrench look seriously at the bike. If you can't do
your own wrenching you better check to see if the local shop will work
on it for you. I've heard some places will not touch bikes older than
10. Now as for your friend, he knows diddly about Harleys.

I'd say an 82 FXR with 35K could be a good bike if it's been looked
after, it was a great bike new.

If it is under $7,000 I'd strongly consider it.

Well....there are lots of strong, running shovelheads out there. I
have an '83 FXR Shovelhead, and no, it's not running right now.
Unless you know Harleys, are pretty good at wrenching, and have the
time/money/garage space to devote some time to it, you're probably
much better off waiting to find an Evo. If you must ride, find
yourself a UJM to ride while you get some money together for the
Harley of your dreams. Now, you *could* buy this bike and have a real
gem and never need to do any more than routine maintenance on it..but
shovels take a bit more routine maintenance than the newer bikes.

I don't have the time, tools, knowledge, or ability to fix my own bike
(dammit!). I was ready to give it the old college try, but in my
case, it's not a matter of taking it apart and putting it back
together again..there's just too much that got messed up when the
valve broke. Between that and working lots of overtime, I decided to
turn it over to the professionals. Yup...it's gonna cost me. By the
time it's all said and done, I'd have probably come out better waiting
a bit and getting an Evo.

If you don't have experience with Harleys in general and shovelheads
in particular, I'd venture to guess that a shovelhead isn't the best
choice for your *first* bike.

BTW, if you haven't already done so, the FIRST thing you should do is
take the MSF (or equivalent) course to learn to ride safely so that
when you do find the right bike, you live long enough to enjoy it.

well, i had an 82 fxr that was an excellent machine, with very few
problems.rode it 50,000 plus miles and it always got me home.depends
on the previous owner. ordinarly, i wouldn't suggest a bike that old
for a new guy, but IF it is low mileage, a syou say, and the price is
OK, and you have to have a harley, you'd go along way to find a better
model.

but that's just me.

Since you clearly don't have a clue who Judy Fearn is or what or how well
she rides, I'd suggest to you, Slick, that you just stomped on your dick.

If you apologize quickly, you may not be reduced to a small pile of
buckyballs.

But then, that might just be your highest evolutionary potential.

It's OK, Bob. Stan clearly couldn't find his ass with both hands so
his riding ability must be suspect as well. Let's see him do a 700

You know, with the excellent advice you give, you really should be
writing for one of the major women's magazines. Maybe Cosmo? No, that

It's not actually a "woman's magazine" per se, but would be *perfect*.

There is a word used to describe children that learn to spell before
kindergarten.

Went on a pretty nice ride Sunday. Not a real long one, just down to
SF. Beautiful day, very warm for autumn. Musta hit 90 in the Valley.
Got to the Oakland Bay Bridge (with traffic to match the Mon am
commute) and watched the Blue Angels do a fly over and cavort around
for awhile.

Hooked up with a buddy and went to Candlestick for the Great BayArea
Football Rivalry. That really ain't a bad *football* stadium.
Enjoyed a most excellent afternoon in a t-shirt. Watched a hellofa
good contest. Was rootin for the underdogs, who damn near pulled it
off. But they (9ers) kept trying to give the game away, after stayin
in it, and then the Raiders would answer: no, we ain't gonna take it
(yet!). Finally, well into overtime (where for reasons I don't
understand, the Raiders got the ball *and* the wind -- musta been some
9er coach fuckup but nobody's talkin about it -- the '9ers succeeded
in givin it away.

Rode home in the late afternoon and into the darkness of midevening.
Almost warm enuf to leave the jacket off, but I didn't.

What a fine day, indeed!

Lying about having a wife , or a bike that never existed, is very cool!

But you're wrong , Pan .
The FXR Super Glide II was introduced in 1982 and sold alongside the
existing FX models. The FXR chassis was essentially an FLT Tour Glide
chassis with lighter frame tubes and a more conventional design around the
steering head.[10] As such, it offered a rubber-mounted engine and a
five-speed transmission, as opposed to the solid mounting and four-speed
transmission of the original FX chassis.[10]
Don't have a clue where the OP was coming from though .

Seems that any bike from the AMF years are to be considered with suspicion. Might be wrong, though.

OK , two points here - first off , you're replyingto a post that is almost
16 years old . Second , any AMF bike that's still on the road has most
likely had any issues fixed by now .
