A Van for Eddie

I just got a wonderfully promising phone call from Ann Keiger
(Eddie's Mom). She has located a van for Eddie, it's an '88 Ford van
that has been converted, it has a raised roof, a raised doorway and a
rotary lift, all of the things needed to get Eddie out and about. This
is great news, because the van is only $8,000. That is a way low price
for such a vehicle. It is in great condition and needs no work or mods.
Eddies chair will fit in this van perfectly (his chair is pretty
high-backed).

The bad news is that Ann is unable to finance that amount at this
time.

The bigger problem is that this van is not going to last forever.

So now comes an issue that I have thought about for a long time,
knowing at some point the time would be right to address it: How do
we, Eddie's friends and supporters, raise and handle the funds for a
Van for Eddie?

I am very open to suggestions. I am also willing to set up an account
for contributions, or I'm sure Ann would be willing to do the same,
though I don't believe either of us has ever done that before.

It's like tasting victory, and worrying about that last obstacle. I
believe getting Eddie out of the home and into the stream of real life
more often will do wonders for his attitude. Making it easy for Ann,
who sees him every day, to transport him is worth every penny of
the $8000, as currently it is a major production and doesn't happen
very often due to the difficulty. South East Harley of Cleveland is
close, he loves that place (it's like a little harley town inside).
There's
museums, malls, all kinds of things close by that he doesn't hardly
(if ever) get to do anymore. After nearly 3 years, he could become a
part of the outside world again, even if it is as a spectator, at least
he'll be experiencing it again.

What can we do?

I (along with others) have thought of several things we can do in the
spring, but this van will be long gone by then.

Andrezj, would you please pass the hat at the MITN-VR? Take
names in case we need to return the money (oh, please folks, let's not
let this opportunity pass us by!).

Please let me know of any ideas you might have for fundraising.

Also, please distribute this as you might to spread the word and get
interest up in this.

To read more about Eddie, see my page at

http://www.pmw.org/~grant/index.html

Again, please help us not let this pass us by!

Thanks!

I tried to access this but it kept timing out. I bookmarked it and
will try again later.

I've been a church treasurer and currently collect/distribute funds
for an 18year old single mom Elaine and I watch over.
I can give you my little bit of insight from experience.

1. Keep accurate written records of any funds people give you.
Even if it is cash, write down the name of the person and the
date and amount donated. If you are later falsely accused of
"mishandling funds", you will have a paper trail to protect
yourself. It only takes one false accusation to put a damper
on the whole thing. Kind of like a pastor taking his wife with
him to visit the single lady in his church. You want to keep
yourself covered.
2. Opening up an account is a good idea, but you'd be best to keep
it out of your name or Eddie's moms name (IMHO)(see above)
Most banks will let you set up an account for this type of
fundraising. When you are seeking donations, people will feel
more comfortable writing out a check to the "Eddie (last name)
Fund" c/o 1st National Bank. Get what I mean?
You will be protected, and people will be more willing to give.

Let me know by E-mail exactly what is wrong with Eddie.
My closest friend is a computer engineer, and has formed a non-
profit corp. called MALACHI Inc. It stands for Machines Adapted
for your Living Arangment Creating new Hope and Independence.
He has devoloped software and hardware that enables paralyzed
people to use their phones, open and close doors, turn lights
on and off, operate the TV/VCR/STERIO, etc. all by voice activation.
He has installed several systems and they open up a whole new
world for someone who previously couldn't do anything.
I mention this for a couple of reasons: this may benefit Eddie
in his situation, and my friend has told me that there are
organizations that help people pay for the system (my buddy makes a
large income at his job so takes no money from MALACHI).

Maybe there is money (from a certain organization) that is out
there that you just need to find for the van.

Hope this helps. Sorry I rambled. You said you were open to
suggestions!

Sunshine,

Get to the bank and set up the account for donations. Then let
us know where to send the checks. Between rmh and the digest, we
can make it happen.

If even 1/2 the people here and 1/2 of the Digest folks sent $5, we could
have the money in no time... I would be willing to send $5 because I know
this is a legitimate reason and a real person..... We can do it!!!! Let me
know if I can help in any way???

SunShine, do it. Get the bank account, send out the
call, tell us the name to write on the checks (or
cheques, if you're a Canuck) and an address to
which to send the letter.

Someone else....Stafford? Lady Jane? Fast Eddie?
Please tell the newcomers to the b&g about Eddie
Kieger. He posted to me on the day of the night
he crashed and called me "Pen" which was my brother's
childhood nickname for me. I asked him why he did
that and he said he didn't know.

Stafford referred to Eddie as the little guy with
all the tats who got more pussy than any man
deserved. He always boasted when the navy
let him "blow shit up".

Someone else.....take up the story.....and I'll
fill in the descriptions of ICU for those of you
who've never seen inside of one.

I know what I can do. I pledge $25, and as soon as an address is available,
I'll put a check in the mail. I don't know Eddie, except as a guy lots of
folks here seem to care about, who's had some disabling misfortune. That's
enough for me. I'm in.

Beautiful, Rich. This is but part of what makes RMH such a
special place. With all the negative stuff that has gone on
between you and Sunshine, when she puts out a call for help on
behalf of one of us who has a very real need for our help, the
differences are forgotten. Thank you.

SunShine, Rich's advice is good advice. If you haven't already,
send him the info on Eddie and let him see what he can do to
help. He has some already established connections that could
come through to make things happen faster.

Rich, thanks again. For more than just the information.

Sunshine -

Sounds like there is _real_ need here. When the account is setup and there
is an address, would you send me Eddie's story, I'd like to post it at the
local shop and hang out's. In the mean time, I'll pledge $25. Where do I
send it...

If you consider the possibility that a very large number of individuals
read RMH but never feel comfortable enough to post, then readership
could well exceed 3,200 individuals.

Of course not every reader will contribute, and some will send more than
$5. I know Ann and Sunshine will keep us all informed on the progress
of contributions.

I know Sunshine will be responding and getting things in gear on Monday
when she gets to read all of this. Rich, you will probably hear from
her then.
