We are embarking on a new (sideline) venture leveraging our photographic skills
in doing portraits.
We plan to specialize (and advertise) in the following areas:
1) Tattoo Portraits. We're getting a lot of interest from people that spent a
lot of time/money/pain on good ink, and once it's healed, they want a good
portrait of them with the work.
2) Biker Boudoir portraits. We've already done some of these where someone
might want a tastefully (and discretely) done portrait of them as a present for
their spouse. Draped across their bike...or one of ours....in a variety of
settings (outdoor/nature on our private property, or studio based). Framed
portraits....calendars, etc.
Just curious as to what the interest in such portraits might be.....
Thoughts/Comments/Suggestions?
Thanks for any/all feedback.

I have experience in Boudoir and related photography from roughly 12-13
years ago. What is your medium to be? Color film? Who will develop
and print? Integrity of developer and printer? Touchy issues to some
potential clients. I remember back when - there was only one quality
film lab that would implement special conditions suitable to some
situations in the whole of the Tampa side of the Tampa Bay area.

I would think that would be a very small niche since from a practical
standpoint since they will always have the artwork convenient for a
buddy with a disposable or digital camera to serve that purpose.
Perhaps a better utilization would be to publish a book of tattoo
portraits which would mean model releases which I’m sure you are
familiar with.

There were a couple of photographers offering this in the biker
community around these parts and evidently it wasn’t very successful
since they disappeared after about a year.
I did some limited amounts of that type of photography when I retired
from Big Blue but accidentally discovered a broader market was hair
dresser portfolios. Getting their confidence with quality work and
being discrete is the key. Usually the hair dresser gets some clients
to pose for the various stages of hair preparation and the clients get
a free hair do. The secondary benefit is the clients are often
flattered with the photography and wish additional photography which
can be very lucrative. Kind of like bridesmaids at a wedding which is
where the real money is. Model releases are suggested.
The hair dressers have all sorts of clubs and get togethers. The word
will spread if they are satisfied with your work.
Just my two cents.....

Or black and white. Or digital.
Who will develop

A local pro photographer I have complete trust in.

I agree, and have covered the issue to the satisfaction of some fairly
conservative clients. In the case of digital we do all the printing.
>I remember back when - there was only one quality

Yup-I remember when too. Now, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't take any
of this film to WalMart or anything, but I have found it easier to
find reputable printers lately. These negs never leave the building,
and I know all the staff there. They are all pro photographers (some
apprentice level) and do a lot of "high fashion" printing as well as a
lot of fine art printing.
That's not the kind of photography we do. These are actual
professional portraits. Not point and click snapshots.

Being extensively tattooed myself, yes I'm familiar with model
releases.

Interesting idea. (Money-wise) Artistically I'd find that pretty
boring.

Hey Dana, I've been in the photo/video business in one form or another
for the last 16 years. I'll just add this one bit of advice. There is no single
niche that will make you a living. You need to have a bunch of ideas,
and do them all to keep you busy, or you're right, let Andrzej keep his day
job. :)
YMMV, JMHO, etc.

I guess that don't sound quite right either. Oh well, sorry.
Can I bring my bright red mouthball?
Don T.- Oh great, that is right, I lent it to Nancy and I haven't got it

Oh, for sure I get that. I'm also a graphic designer by trade, the
phography thing is more a kind of serious hobby for me. I describe
myself as an "enthusiastic amatuer" even though I've sold my work. I'm
even booked to do a couple of weddings this summer, something I told
myself I'd *never* do again. What the heck, I'm in the mood and it's
for friends.

I shoot Digital SLR exclusively, so no developing needed. Printing is done
in-house on quality paper using archival Ultrachrome inks (70-100 year
lifespan).
Since everything is in-house, that means that discretion can be guaranteed
absolutely.
Good issues though....

It's niche markets that interest us....we have no interest in doing
wedding/kid/dog photography. Rather leave that to the Walmarts and so-called
pro photographers.
For now, it's intended to be a sideline, not a primary source of income (any
income means the camera gear becomes a deductible expense. We also have close
ties to some of the artists, which is where the requests are coming
from....instant referrals.
The issue with the friend with camera is that they rarely produce a formal
portrait that is worthy of hanging on a wall. We don't want to do close-ups of
the ink....more person portraits with the tats well-featured (got some
interesting ideas on how to do some of that).
> Perhaps a better utilization would be to publish a book of tattoo
> portraits which would mean model releases which I’m sure you are

We'ld definitely consider that down the road....but to get enough pics to make a
book doable, I would rather clients paid for portraits along the way.
> There were a couple of photographers offering this in the biker
> community around these parts and evidently it wasn’t very successful

Again, since it's going to be a sideline rather than used to pay the mortgage,
I'm thinking that we can afford to specialize to this level.
> The hair dressers have all sorts of clubs and get togethers. The word
> will spread if they are satisfied with your work.
Probably not an area that I want to work in though. We primarily do photography
for the love of it.....just figure we'll specialize in areas where we can show
that we're different and have some "street cred".
