...and the 96 for that matter.

Last time I was on a Harley was in the 80's. My engine 'walked' the bike
across the lot at idle. Was great at cruising speeds.

The question here is between the 103 and 103B. I UNDERSTAND the technical
difference as far as the counter-balance and mounting questions, the dynas
vs softtails, etc...

However, what I can't seem to get an answer about is with the "B" motors
specifically. I LIKED the vibration on my old hog. Is the HD experience what
it should be with the counter-balanced "B" engines? Does the fact that it's
apparently so smooth give the HD old-school community concerns?

I'm eyeballing a 2013 Fat Boy Lo which uses 103B.

Also, is there a forum where I can get my dose of HD rider opinions as
opposed to reviews by motor mags?

No , that's just Panhead , the non-biking drunk that's pissed at the world
. He useta be kinda entertaining , but he's slid a long ways down and is
just an irritant now . You can either ignore him or toss him into the
bitbucket .
FWIW I ride a '90 rubbermount touring bike , last one was a '76 shovel . I
enjoyed the shovel , I enjoy the Ultra ... take a test ride !

There are those options, of course.
Butt, I am STILL very entertaining, and only an irritant to newbie bugs that
have no spine or cellophane like skin.
"Biking" IS very over-exaggerated after all.
Sure it's fun, but so what?
I gave up the experience, after I had my fill of the crap. Been there, built
some, seen it, ate the bugs, road there and back. Yawn.

No one can answer that question but you. You really need to find
out when Demo Days are at your local dealer and just try it out.
Heck, dealers are probably getting desparate right around now, so you
can probably road test the one you're interested in directly.

hdforums.com All kinds of opinions from all kinds of
uninformed riders. Very few of them know much about any kind of
motorcycle beyond where to put the gas, but they're over flowing with
opinions. They also ask questions like "should I buy the "B" motor,
or not?" Then they argue about the answers.......you'll be right at
home.

Harley Tech Talk is a great forum, free too, but they don't mid a bit if you
send a couple bucks in.
Like others have said, do a test drive, then decide.

IMO, the balanced engine feels more like riding an import, vibration wise.
The rubber mount frames give you some thump when idling, but smooth out as
the RPM increses.

I can't vouch for the B engine (would like to try one some time) but I
can say that the rubber mount TC engines vibrate quite a bit at idle.
I kept the garage door opener in a pouch behind the windshield, and
noticed that when the bike (2003 UC) warms up in the driveway the
garage door would go up and down. Had to find another place to put
it.

I've read somewhere that the counterbalances in the B engine reduce
but do not eliminate the vibration. Were I you, I'd ask for a test
drive.

Now, the Sportster at idle would practically bounce the front wheel,
like it was eager to get on the road.

Try the Delphi hosted motorcycle groups. Free access, only limits yer
ability to post photos and use signatures. There are about ten or more
mc groups, maybe 3-5 dedicated to HOG users or various stripes.

You must create a user name and pw to log in, in order to post.

Entertaining! TOO bad I'm 2 years or more too late. Any how some say the solid mounted motors certainly have more vibration at idle but smooth out after you get going whereas the rubber mount is less vibration at idle and a bit more at certain rpm's. I had a rubber mount and it was great and I had a solid mount but not in a big twin but in a 60 Ironhead I rode for over a dozen years. Translation: I would never spend the king of cash for a soft tail after already having that vibrating experience for over 12 years.
