I routinely noticed temps of up to 245 and almost thought of getting an
oil cooler until I read the thread about them and decided not to get
one.
Anyhow, back to the story...
1 month ago I started noticing moisture underneath the glass on top of
the LCD readout. A week after that it quit working. Last week I finally
reached the 7500 mile mark and placed it into service, and hoping also
to find out why the dipstick quit working. The dealership told me that
it was a 30 day warranty and I would have to get a new one for the small
price of $89.95. Im dumb, but not that dumb, so after getting the bike
back, I took it apart and noticed that the syn3 had made it past the
seals and was all over the battery. I replaced the battery and used lots
of cotton swabs trying to wipe out all of the excess syn3 that had made
it past the barriers and seals. While I was at it, I placed the
disassembled dipstick underneath the Texas sun until the condensation
dried out and then replaced the battery. I also cleaned the seals and
re-lubed them with silicone (im a scuba diver and use it for seals
around air tanks. hopefully the heat wont break it down).
After putting it back together, it works perfectly again. I find solace
in the little blue light, knowing that I saved myself almost $90.
Heres the official HD description for that part. Note the sentence about
being waterproof....

Hmmmm. I bought mine about the same time. Maybe a few months
earlier.

Mine reads about 8 degrees high unless water boils at 228 at sea
level.

I'm running SYN3 also.
Last Thursday. VA. Blueridge Parkway. Rain. Parked it in the rain
at the lodge and it rained pretty good. The next morning it was full
of water and not working.
Saturday in Gatlinburg I'd have liked to have known how hot the engine
was but the gauge was full of water.
Makes you wonder if water is making it into the oil system.
I'm going to call my dealer today and see if they'll stand behind it.
If not I try your solution.

Well, ya know ... That synthetic stuff *is* awfully slippery!

well, yeah, "designed to be" being the operative words here.

I dropped mine off at my dealer. I bought it in 9/03. Let's see what
they do. If its nothing then I try your route.
I was thinking of getting the analog one, and was wondering if anyone had a problem
with that? I figured it was faster to glance down at the analog even in bright sun
and see the temp.
Thanks,
Arty
My first analog had moisture inside the glass a couple of months after I
got it...took it back to the dealer...replaced it, no questions asked.

Deuce AKA Burdel
Bagger owners can replace that ambient air temperature gauge with an
illuminated oil temp gauge. Rodger McEwan Company at 619-421-9003 makes
one that looks just like the oil pressure gauge on the right side of the
instrument cluster. Part # GK-61537. Can't find a web site. My local HD
dealer carries them.
...still looking for an analog dipstick gauge for Dynas.
