Me & the Mrs. are on a small trip through Eastern PA & NJ Tomorrow thru
Thursday.

We Spending the first few days in the Hershey area, then on to York for
another plant tour.

Then to Atlantic city Wednesday, along the way we will stop for lunch
possibly in Philly, IIRC you recommended GInos, is this accurate?

Gonna visit ATCO on Thursday afternoon to see what's shaking at Street
night.

Politically I prefer Geno's, but Pat's steaks are better. They're right
across the street fom each other. There's gonna be two of you there,
try them both. :)

Pardon me Roach but this sounds like the type of advice one might
expect from the latest diet guru. Shirley they should have at least
one in each establishment. Hell and then have one for me.

Mmmmmm, Cheesesteak, Mmmmmmm.

Cheers : )

I'm gonna jump in here and ask... I was stationed in Philly years ago and
coming back to the base we would stop at a place called Oregon street steaks
"I think that was the full name" anyway, I loved those Philly cheese steaks
there. Never have been able to fined anything remotely close here in Texas.
Wouldn't know if the place is still there would ya?

Heh. On my first cross country trip in 1970, I naively ordered a
steak sandwich in Texas and got a t-bone on a huge slab of white
bread. Not what I expected. You can't get a real cheese steak anywhere
out of this area. I'm not sure if you can get the right bread either.

I agree completely. Especially about the bread. It's like eating a New
York bagel and then a bagel from anywhere else. It may be good, but
it's not the same.

Used to be a place in Richmond, VA, named Johnson's Burger Bar (my
favorite was Johnson's Burger Bar #4). The food was like you'd expect
if Marians arrived, learned to speak English but were totally
literal-minded. A fish sandwich was a fried fish (head, fins, tail and
all) on two pieces of Wonder Bread. A steak sandwich was a thin little
t-bone with grilled onions on two slices of Wonder Bread.

It wasn't healthy, but it was all damn tasty.

And not really duplicatable anywhere else.

Or pizza in Brooklyn. You can get a decent slice in Little Italy downtown
Manhattan too but forgettabout getting decent pizza midtown. Doesn't exist.
Ya want real pizza, Brooklyn's the place. Bagels and pizza from NY is
special because of the water which comes from the lime rich supplies in the
lower Hudson valley (where I live). I had a damn good bagel this morning.
Damn good.

You asked for a steak sandwich, what did you want? As far as not getting
a cheese steak out of the area, is Annapolis MD part of the area?
There's a joint in Edgewater MD called Jake's Steaks that makes them the
Philly way, the owner learned at Geno's or Pat's but decided to live by the
water.

What I had grown up 'knowing' what a steak sandwich was.

No. Anything that doesn't include Eastern PA and Southern NJ is
out of the area. You can't even get a cheesesteak in Pittsburg.

Well I tell ya what I'm gonna do.

Next Saturday, I'm gonna be riding right through Edgewater, MD on my
way to MAMMARY. I will look up Jake's Steaks, and investigate.

Here's my prediction. I'll find a guy that had the best of intentions,
but found that the locals didn't understand the art of the cheesesteak, and
to stay in buisness he had to modify the recipe by adding extra condiments,
spices, etc, to where it's unrecognizable as a Philly CS, or he's out of
buisness.

Wanna bet?

That's probably true to a certain extent but I seem to recall being able
to find a passable CS in that part of Maryland when I lived there. The
question I can't help but ask is why bother to find a Philly CS outside
of the Philly/South Jersey area? If you're in the Edgewater/Annapolis
area you'd do way better asking where the best crabcake sandwich is.
More than a few bike friendly bars have 'em. There's also these roadside
"pit beef" sandwich stands a little closer to Baltimore and if you get
over to the Eastern Shore, especially on a weekend, there are roadside
outdoor chicken BBQ's worth checking out. I mean, really, you wouldn't
order a pizza in Paris would you?

When I was living there (a lot of years ago, now) they made cheesesteaks
by slicing the ribeye thin, cooking it on a flat grill, adding peppers
and onions if you ordered it that way, and putting the cheese produt on
out of a big can.

Pretty close.

I'd like to, but I'm not even sure it's still there. A quick web search
tells me it's moved to a shopping center. It's on route 2 at Central
avenue.

I hope you're wrong, it was a good place to eat.

Pit beef ain't BBQ in the truest sense of the word, it's just a good
beef sandwich. As for good Q, speaking as a Kansas City BBQ Society
certified competition BBQ judge, I can tell you beyond any doubt that
Tejas doesn't even come close to having a lock on good Q.

Yeah, I'm not too happy about it myself. The little one's got a camp
orientation that weekend. We (me, banker, Julie) tried convincing her that
it wasn't very important but the good mommy syndrome thing kicked in and
she's holding tight. He's also got Little League playoffs that weekend. My
MIL offered to step in and help but I wouldn't feel right asking her to do
so much.

Barring a last minute change of mind and a decent late airfare, she's a
no-go this time. But she promised to come out to Eddie's in August.
Hopefully that'll happen.

I'm camping at Roger's to answer your question from da ping. I think Bob &
