Tom DeBoni adds:

Believe me...ridin' out Camille in a 3rd floor hallway of the barracks
was no picnic. The aftermath was incomprehensible. Here in Iowa, I
now find myself headin' for the basement when it just gets cloudy. I'm
more than a little gun-shy when it comes to storms after livin' through
Camille!!!
Tom '91 FLHS "The Zebra"
Fond memories. Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi, summer of '69. Communication Electronics Technical
School. Got rid of them FANG's after the first phase of training. Continued spit-shining floors for a while longer.
As a young pup, I remember seeing Dolphins for the first time and thinking "SHARK". Hell at the Gulf of Mexico
in that vicinity, you'd walk out a half mile and still be only chest deep. I thought I was racing sharks to the shore.
I remember stumbling into an alley between a couple of them bars stacked up outside the base gates and seeing
a drunk sleeping it off between a couple of garbage cans. That was this country boy's first exposure to the homeless.
Can't forget them weekend trips to New Orleans, strobe lights on the dance floor, and the feedback-y guitar of
Jimmy Hendrix. And there were weekend trips into the back country of Mississippi where you'd find mud slides
and rope-swings next to streams filled with little long-nose gar (them fish scared the hell outta me, too).
Bob
'94 883
You must have been in the Triangle. All of us in main base barracks
(I was 2408th SS) got trotted over to the hangars to ride it out.
We couldn't hear the wind in the concrete-block classrooms, but the
restrooms had adjacent AC vents that went up to the roof, and I've never
heard anything like that howling before or since. If I could make gadget
to produce an electric guitar sound like that, I could probably retire
tomorrow, though.

(nicknames of the civil engineering squadrons that flew in to
ramrod the mess clean-up afterward), I start looking for a good
hiding place, preferably one without any C-rations. ;-)
OBmoto: I had my first post-adolescent near-death experience in a
Biker Bar in Biloxi. Two other still-hairless buddies and myself
decided to celebrate our first taste of freedom by sampling
the wares of a local establishment within walking distance of
the main gate, and we neglected to check the fine print on the
off-limits card for the name of the place. When we walked
in, *every one* of the dozen or so really pissed-off-looking
patrons stood up en masse and started to close in on us. Either
there was some sort of fire drill going on, or else we
we had somehow seriously violated the local dress code,
probably via our gauche hairstyles and nerdy civvies. That's
when all the military physical training paid off. Our Training
Instructors would have been proud of our speed and endurance
that day, you betcha. ;-)

Not-so-fond memories of Montgomery Alabama (Gunter AFB), 1964
where this young Yankee GI got trapped between the Civil Rights
honkies and some pissed-off good 'ole boys. Jumping out of
helicopters looked _real_ good all of a sudden.
Ooops, brain phart. Goes to show what 20+ years of forgetfulness and selective
memory can do to a guy.

I too was at Keesler AFB, Biloxi in the summer/winter of 68. One day I was
complaining that it was a bit spooky going into town at night because lot
of the local "Good 'Ole Boys" didn't take kindly to GI's (especially us
Damn Yankees) hittin on their ladies (very insecure?) and it made for some
uncomfortable moments.
Well I was told that up to a few months back it was damned near impossible
to go into town without less than a small army because guys were getting
knifed at some of the bars quite regularly. So the story goes that the
Base Commander finally put out a notice that he was going to go to this one
particular bar after work for a beer and invited anyone along who might be
so inclined. About 2,000 folks showed up to join him for that beer and
they filled up the bar, parking lot, street.... you get the picture. Lot
to be said about a show of force.
I was also at Kadina ABF on Okinawa (sp?) (you know, small island parked by
Japan) when they were talking about turning the island back to Japan.
There was a lot of protesters at the main gate yelling "Yankee Go Home"
(kinda like Biloxi again) and generally making a big fuss. So after a bit
things got bad enough that they put the town off limits and closed down the
gate. Well things went well for a few days then the local merchants showed
up with their sticks and started beating the hell out of the protesters.
Seems there was still a great need for the American $Buck$. So the
protesters went away, the gates reopened, the local Girls/Merchants were
back in the money, and a good time was had by all.
I'm not trying to make a point here, or relate to anything, I just felt
like tellin a story or two. Besides, I'm a sucker for happy endings:-)
