Hi, I want to put my brother's 1989 HD Sportster used wheels with
mounted tires on eBay for him (as he bought new ones), but I want to
make sure they are both packed securely to ship before I even put up
the ad, and so I know the shipping weight. I was reading at eHow.com
that any impact in shipping can cause a defect that may make the
wheels/tires dangerous, even though the wheels/tires may look fine.
What is the best type of shipping boxes I can use and where can I get
them? I assume the front and rear should be packed separately? Thanks
very much.

There's no real good way to ship wheels with tires mounted. I've always
saved the boxes when I've bought wheels online and reused them to ship
take-offs. Some appear to have been professionally packaged....not cheap.
One wheel with tire mounted was packaged in a Weber grill box, this came
from an H-D dealer!

About the only way I know to package a wheel with tire mounted is to use an
oversized box and cut it down or bend, fold, spindle or mutilate it and
tape, tape, tape all around the outside. Use tons of bubble wrap and packing
pillows paying special attention to the rotor, if installed. Do expect the
shipper to throw the boxes around. Heavy stuff frequently gets bashed pretty
good.

I wonder if it might not pay to take it to UPS and have them pack and
ship it. They probably aren't cheap, but at least it's done right and
insured. Just a thought...

I would build a small wooden crate.... and ship ups.... they do not put
those on the belts they get special handing. I did work there for over 9
years... and saw many wheels with on rims with just a label rubber part and
taped around the wheel and rim over the label so it would not get lost...
not the best idea but the quickest to package I guess.

Thanks everybody for the advice, will prolly use the cardboard box,
cut up and taped to fit method, with plenty of packing material. I'll
check a couple tires stores / MC part shops near me first to see if
they have a couple boxes laying around that may work.
