Go to Harley's web site <http://www.harley-davidson.com/> and find the
"alphabetical soup" section. It explains every letter designation as far
back as they used them.

For a quick lesson on the later models:

1st letter designation:
F=Big Twin (Hog)
X=Small Twin (Sporster)

2nd letter designation (on big twins):
FX=Big twin/small fork tubes (or Sport version)
FL=Big twin/large fork tubes (or Touring version)

second letter designation (on small twins):
XR=Sporster (small twin) Racing version (XR750, XR100, etc.)
XL=Small twin/small fork tubes (Sport version, remember the L=Sport
version from the big twins?)

Following letter designations (Big twins):
ST=Softail
R=Rubber mount (swingarm models)
D=Dyna (convertible, superceeded the R designation)
P=Police Special
WG=Wide Glide
STC=Softail "Classic" (on FL's)
STC=Softail "Custom" (on FX's)
STF=Softail Fat Boy
STN=Softail Nostalgia
STS=Softail Springer (Sport version=FXSTS)
STS=Sottail Springer (Touring version=FLSTS)
STSB=Softail Springer "Bad Boy"

I'm sure I missed a few and probably flubbed a couple too, but this
should give you the general idea. So if you see a .sig with "FLSTC" you
can assertain that it is a Big Twin (F) Touring model (L) Softail (ST)
Heritage Classic (C). Or a FXRP would be a Big Twin (F) Sport model (X)
Rubber mount (R) Police Special (P)....

Reply to an old one.

Not coded, but dammed hard to figure out, but if you look at the Harley
Davidson web page
'http://www.harley-davidson.com/products/motorcycles/alpha/', you can see a
description of all the letters and what they mean in different periods of
the Harley history.

What a mess
