Gotta add some Sonny Barger Hot Sauce to my collection! Only I'd be a
leetle hesitant to hand over my CC# to his site.
Bet his book will be interesting, if not outright entertaining.

Naw, don't give up hope. I just talked to a Ventura Brother last week and he

Well I went up to Oaktown but I never made it by the Clubhouse.
Instead, I spent all of the time I allocated for business throwing a hissy
fit at Arlen Ness & company. I yelled, screamed, called people names, threw
dirt... you know the drill.
It seems that "good ole Arlen Ness" has a "new return policy" and wants to
start *fucking* the public when the chrome peels off of his billet parts he
sells. And I told him exactly how I felt about his "new return policy" and
which orifice it should go in. He doesn't think that he should have to eat
the cost of replacing a part that is of poor quality and that *I* should!
(even though he has a written policy stating *he* should)
There's more to come on this one folks, I ain't done with him yet. I'm
waiting to see what he sends me in return for a pair of FUCKED UP mirrors
(less then a year old, on the bike less then 8 months) before I tell my
story to the whole world. And I plan to.
In the meantime, beware of Arlen's in San Leandro CA. He has a "new policy"
(according to his manager, Paul) on returns of bad chrome... but he
apparently keeps it a secret until you go in with a bad part and want it
replaced.
Stay tuned, same channel....

Precisely my point. Like I told Arlen, "I paid 250 bucks for that fucking
set of mirrors sitting on the counter with the aluminum sitting there
corroding away under the chrome as we watch, and Paul is telling me 'that's
as good as it gets'?" BULLSHIT. I say FUCKING BULLSHIT.
That old fuck had the audacity to tell me that "Billet is hard to plate,
it's really difficult. And it's much harder to plate then regular aluminum".
I guess he doesn't know what the fuck "Billet" is. He ought to learn more
about his own product. All "billet" means is that it started out as a solid
chunk of aluminum and was machined from one piece, as opposed to being
melted down and cast in a mold.
Who the fuck does he think he's talking too? Who's he trying to bullshit?
And as a matter of fact, I was told by someone in the industry that "Billet
is less likely to corrode then cast" so I shouldn't be having as much
problems as I'm having. It seems really odd that it's just the Pushrod Tubes
and the Mirrors that give me the *most* problems. The shifter pegs and the
oil gauge bracket give me problems, but not nearly as bad as the Pushrod
tubes/mirrors. I have one of his voltage regulators sitting right out in the
open, right behind the front wheel, and it's been on there since the day
that they came out without so much as a road ding.
>We'll be waiting and watching bat^H^H^H Preacher.
I've been waiting for my mirrors to be sent back to me before I posted the
whole story. Now remember, they told me I'd have them in THREE DAYS. I went
in on 1/5/00, it's now 1/15/00. That's TEN DAYS... so far.
Kinda tells a story of it's own right there, don't it?

I've had my "Louvered Chrome" Cam Cover (which I paid ~$350 for) replaced
one time so far too. The problem with it? "Bad Batch of Chrome" according to
the tech that looked at it that time.
The problem I had with the *new* cover was that the cam bushing was too
small and the cam wouldn't fit into the bushing. I had use a brake hone to
hone it out larger until I could get it over the cam bushing end of the
camshaft.
That "Arlen Ness" guy sure do sell some good quality shit, eh? Yesiree Bob.
Some of you might be thinking "so if it's so bad why'd you buy it in the
first place". I often ask myself the same question. When I bought the bike
from the original owner he had already started the "trend". The "trend"
being that everything flat was louvered, everything round was grooved. (the
only items that are flat and grooved are the transmission top cover and the
one piece dash) The Ness shit he had on the bike when I got it was all in
good shape (it was all pretty much brand new too) *except* the mirrors. And
only one of them was trashed. The chrome on it was peeling off of it like
tin foil. I actually peeled it *all* off and polished the bare aluminum out.
It didn't look bad but when I went up and started buying a *bunch* of stuff
to continue the "trend" one of the counter people was kind enough to offer
to replace the mirrors. "Just bring them up, I'll take care of it" so I did.
I figured one thing out of all the Ness junk wasn't bad, everyone is due
their mistakes. And they way they replaced it with no questions asked showed
me what great customer appreciation they had. Until this most recent "change
of policy" they decided to pull.
And once I got "so deep" into the Ness crap there was no way to turn back or
stop. The bike would look "unfinished" so I went ahead and bought the rest
of the crap. And besides, since I bought it all in a short period of time it
wasn't until later that I discovered the problems with it. And then it was
too late. Oh, and once you buy it, it's yours. No returns, just exchanges.
(which by the way isn't posted anywhere in the store, which is against the
law)

Yer givin the guy too much credit. It's not made to be pulled out of the
garage, just to be left in the garage... and a garage with environmental
controls on it too. As a matter of fact one time when I e-mailed Arlen's web
site about my pushrod problem a guy named Randy, who claimed to be a Tech
support from Arlen's, first question was "what kind of riding do you do and
where do you live?"....
What the FUCK does *that* matter?? You tellin' me Arlen Ness shit it made
just for use in the middle of the country? The fact is, I RIDE the
motherfucker. And apparently Arlen's SHIT isn't made for bikes that get
ridden. His garbage gives new meaning to the term "Show Quality".... I guess
it means the "quality" is only good for "show" and that's it!
Also the other day when I was in the store raising hell I told Arlen that
this set is at LEAST the sixth pair of pushrod tubes I've had to replace.
(and never bitched about the time it takes to pull the tubes w/o
timesavers!) Arlen asks me "Where do you live? Near the water?" Like *that*
makes any gawd damn difference. It must be their standard blame tactic. I
told him "I live just north of SALINAS and just south of Gilroy... you
know... where it's always HOT and DRY". Then I asked him "what DIFFERENCE
does it make *where* I live? Are you telling me that every one of your
customers that live over in San Francisco has this problem too? If I lived
right on the damn seashore it shouldn't make any difference. If I rode the
motherfucker through the middle of the gawd damn Pacific Ocean it shouldn't
matter... The fact is, your shit doesn't hold up to regular ole run of the
mill riding, period". Oddly enough, he didn't argue the point. Either he
couldn't argue with it or he could see how pissed (and that's puttin it
mildly) I was and didn't want to get punched in the face.
Besides, like I told him, I clean my bike after every single ride I go on.
It's not like I ride it all the time and clean it once a year. I ride it, I
clean it, it's that simple. I may wait a day or two, but it gets a complete
wipe down. I figure it's the price I have to pay to have a nice looking
bike. (and also the primary reason I just bought a black w/mags FLHTC, so I
can ride and NOT clean it)
I'll give the guy this. There is no denying that *some* of his stuff is
good, premium, high quality work. But there is also NO denying that a
*bunch* of his shit is GARBAGE, trash, shit, junk. And top dollar GARBAGE
too. You would think that for the prices he charges a set of pushrod tubes
would last longer then 6 months to a year. Hell, the cheap CCI & DS crap I
have on my bike is better quality then the Arlen Ness GARBAGE I have on it.
You want to know what the *best* quality add-on chrome is? The
Harley-Davidson line of accy's.
Pretty sad commentary if you ask me...
Here's a list of Arlen Ness products I have on my bike and some comments
next to each item regarding it's performance. All the Arlen Ness products I
have on my bike is chrome plated, none is bare aluminum. And as I said in
another post, everything round is grooved, everything flat is louvered
except the trans *top* cover and dash which is grooved.
Top/front:
Oval Mirrors w/radial stems. (replaced at least 4 times)
Handgrips (no problem)
One piece dash (no problem)
Wedge hidden bolt volt. regulator (no problem)
Right side:
Oil pressure gauge (replaced 1 time)
Oil pressure gauge bracket (replaced 2 times)
Oil pressure gauge cover (replaced 2 times)
Pushrod Tubes (replaced at least 6 times)
Oval cam housing & points cover (replaced 1 time)
Oval Trans. side cover (no problem)
Trans top cover (no problem)
Master Cylinder Cover (no problem)
Left side:
Heel and Toe shifter pegs (replaced at least 5 times)
Shifter rod (replaced 1 time)
Primary inspection cover (no problem)
Derby cover (no problem)
Rear:
Passenger Pegs (no problem)
License plate backing/mount plate (no problem)
License plate frame (no problem)
Taillight lens & cover (no problem)
20 items total, 12 of them with no problem.
The remaining 8 items have been replaced a *minimum* of 20 times.
Not a very good record if you ask me. Looks like a F-, and that's only
because you can't get any lower...
To be continued.

Preacher,
First, thanks for keeping us abreast of a vendor and the way they are
treating a customer. Second, I hope a copy of all this is being
forwarded to Arlen Ness along with a note as to what kind of medium
and exposure he's getting.
I know many vendors monitor this newsgroup for feedback. I hope he
does and will do something about it. His shit is expensive and should
be top quality, and if it isn't, for the price, making it right should
be a no questions asked exchange.

Some time ago, I wanted to buy a chromed set of switch covers there. I was told
by the sales guy not to get them, as they were just stuff with the Ness logo on
them, were not produced by them, and weren't that good quailty. I guess that a
lot of the stuff in there is just repacked for him. There's a definate drop off
in quality on some of the items. I've bought a few pieces from them, but always
from the baragin bin, and never for list. If I really want a chrome piece, I'll
take it down to High Lustre in Hayward, (a company Ness staff bag on
mercilessly for some reason), and get them to chrome it. I've *never* had a
problem with their chrome, and despite what my bike looks like, it gets ridden
every day in everything except a torrential downpour.
Fuck it. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the FXSB, and that's going to be
powdercoat, polished, and bead etched.

Amen to *that* allen- 1!
Gareth is a fire looking for a place to happen. Don't let that boy anywhere
near the wiring on your bike, or don't let him fill the gas tank for you!
When *he* starts a fire, he does it RIGHT! :^) Might as well have a full
tank if yer gonna have a fire.
But the end results of the fire are nothing short of spectacular. Have you
seen his bike? Damn, it's FINE. He posted a few .jpg's of it awhile back on
abpmh, right after he put it back together and they really don't do it
justice, even though it looks great in pictures. You should see it live. I
loved it before it was "resurrected out of the ashes of the flames of his
wiring" (he should name it "The Phoenix"!) but he outdid himself with his
rebuild work. Of course I'm a sucker for polished cases and billet pieces on
a engine too! ;^) And it ain't all "flash" either. He did "a little" engine
work to it while he was in there.
If ya ever get a chance, try and take a gander at his scoot. Fuckin'
bitchin'. The flame job is just *too* cool. I like the way they "fade in" at
the front of the tank... kind'a hard to explain, you'd have to see pictures
of it to understand.
Now he's decided to rip apart his Wife's (Jennifer) scoot and rebuild it
too!
Heh heh heh, I don't think *he'll* be "gettin' any" for a long looonnnnng
time.
I meant SLEEP you perverts, he won't be gettin' any SLEEP for a long time!
Geez, what'd you think I meant? Git yer minds out of the gutter. ;^)

I was looking at that, and I almost bought one for $25 from J-P
Cycles. The craziest thing happened since I posted that message...I
was tracing the wires, and the wire from the rear turn signals was
connected to ground (haven't figured out how yet) AND connected to
power. For sure that don't work. I disconnected those, and the other
lights come on, but don't flash.
Now here's the really wierd part. The headlight dowsn't come on, but
it looks like it's good, so while I had the bare wires (see item #1
above) I clipped the hot and ground (from the rear turn signals) to
the connectors on the headlight. When I depressed the tun signal
button, the headlight came on, and the turn signals flashed!!!
This all leads me to believe that all the right stuff is there, it's
just not in the right places. Now I'm too busy getting our online
store ready (flipping the switch this week) to work on the danged
thing. Luckily, it's raining cats and dogs for the past week or so, so
I don't feel like I'm missing anything.
Forget my comments about it not being a wiring problem.
I guess it's time for what I like to call the "Italian Cleanup".
That's when you sort through all the spaghetti that your wiring has
become!
I was treated to a damn good version of it at #63s place about a
month and a half or so ago...Of course, in his case, it was the spaghetti
behind the BatWing fairing. Spaghetti, courtesy of the MoFoMoCo (tm,

Hang on a minute. I didn't even get the first post here asking for my help, and
I'm gettin' bagged on already.
I like to think of my excursions into uncharted wiring territory a public
service. I do have to say though, that both of the bikes I had little (ahem)
incidents on, were just the end result of 20 odd years of crappy fixes by
previous owners. They both had that insulation tape and forty leads all stuck to
battery look that bikes tend to get after a few years. Couple that with me
trying to fix things up a bit and you see the results. I let the smoke out of
the wires on more than one occaision . Good excuse for a rebuild though.
As for indicators. I have a set on both bikes. They reside at the end of my
arms, and leave the bike with me. Simplify. I replaced *all* the wiring,
switches, relays, cables and breakers on both bikes with new bone stock
harnesses, and marine quailty 1500 strand cables. I took off all the systems
that I don't use, which is just about everything bar ignition and lights, and
we're all happy now. I can even refer to the stock wiring diagrams if I need to
. A new harness is about $80, and takes about a day to fit.

Now you're making me blush. It's looking even nicer since Rupert sold me his
fork brace and boot covers. I'll repost the pictures in a.p.b.m.h, mainly to
show allen-1 what color a manly bike is painted.

That's a good idea. I was going to call it "Eric"

I now have shares in Mother's polish. You can see fly shit at 100 paces on the
damn thing.

Courtesy of the good burghers at S&S, and Messrs Leinweber and Rivera. I swear
you could pull a truck with it now.

Larry just did another for me for Jennifer's bike. It's one of the nicest that
I've seen. It's a Brandywine over gold flake with smoky blue/silver ghost
flames. It looks like wisps of cigarette smoke. I'm quite jealous.

This is news to me in what way ? I suggested that she have a putt on the rebel
this weekend if she missed her bike. You know, although I appreciated her reply,
I don't think that the Rebel will actually fit there.
