About a gazillion duckets...but that of course is with Fruit
Loops™ (Trix are extra.. and for kids!!)
Powder coating the frame is rather cheap ..unless you want
mauve.
> I will tear down myself. I am thinking about 1½ -2 k.
That's pretty pricey just for you to tear it down...but, if you
insist....
(or are we talking poundage?)
> Am
> I dreaming?
I assume.
> Also, forgive my ignorance, WTF is Imron (sp)TIA
TIA? (tits-In-Ass?) ahem...
Anyway, "Imron™" is a paint product made by the DuPont
Corporation.
It is known as a "Poly Urethane". (or perhaps " URETHANE")" Who
cares?
Nice paint I guess but, I would never use it, consider it, or
recommend it unless I hated someone. But, then again that's my
opinion.
If I were you, I would consider the "Pukemaker2000" paint job,
over the Belchfire.
Cheaper, Longer lasting, and stands up better to the ROTO-PLOOK
#666 "Flamefest" when all plugs are firing in it's "holiday"
bliss!
Hope that helps.
And off the hook it was!
However, I answered this the best that I could.
Perhaps a professional like John can help out and give us all
some tips?
Powder coating the frame black will run ya about $300
in my neck-o-the-woods. You may want to do a little
smoothin' on that pup first though. As far as the custom
paint job...depends on whose got the best deal on a case
of rattle-cans. ;-) Actually...I believe Panhead will
be chimin' in on this thread 'fore long...as soon as he
gets done untangling the air hose from around his feet
and stops off at the fresh pot of simmerin' fishball
soup for a qick stir.

I just caught this thread... It was I who was tangled up in the air
hose... and those fumes.... <g>
1½ to 2k will buy you a nice two tone and maybe some mild trix... $'s
for the trick work is figured in time so the price can go up drastically
depending on how far you want to take it. Some of the finest work I've
seen in this field belongs to an artist named Dawn Holmes.. She's good
and also very expensive.. This Biketoberfest I asked the owner of one of
her paint jobs, "How much?".... 12k was the reply...ouch!!! but the work
was flawless.
Powdercoating is a good way to go on the frame... molding and painting
to match a custom is time consuming and thus very expensive. When
acquiring quotes from the powder coater, make sure you get quotes on his
best urethane powder and that it's phosphate dipped before the
coating... this is for adhesion and corrosion protection. There are many
grades of powder just like conventional paints.. a cheap powder job is
no better than a cheap paint job..
Imron, like Panhead said is a Urethane enamel. It used to be a great
product, but the good ol' EPA came down on Dupont and made them take out
some key ingredients (in 1982) and now ain't worth a shit IMHO.
There's nothing wrong with dreaming.... that's where we all get some of
our great ideas...

What year is your bike? I ask because ALL Harley-Davidson frames since
1984 are powder coated.
So why do you want to powder coat it? A different color perhaps? (other
then black)
Pre-1984 bike?
Dings/scratches?
Just curious.
BTW, a "fair" custom paint job in my parts (Central coast of Calif)
runs about 1500-1800 bucks exchange.
More for the high dollar jobs, less for the 'plain' jobs.

This is especially helpful, I know very little about powder coating other than
*how* it's done but I have heard it's pretty durable and relatively cheap.

Yeppers they (EPA) gotta finger in everything, same deal with good chrome
plating. Well with the both of ya's having this opinion I guess Imron's out.

Welp, the frame was at one time red and was just painted over that. Needs some
serious, strippin, smoothing and minor repair. Chips and dings aplenty. I will
go back to black with it.
Thanks for the reply, lemme get ya a drink.

made it her own.

Piggybackin' here .... Maggie, did you see the scans of my fxr when I posted
them before .... that paint job was less than your budgeted amount .... black
with traditional hotrod flames outlined in process blue pinstripes. Didn't
include the frame .... but did include both fenders, tank, and ness side
covers ... these were all new tin/plastic. Ping me if you need more

Uh-huh.
There's a duet of the two of 'em on Prine's 'Great Days' anthology.
Prine was evidently quite a hell raiser himself.
