Hello everyone.

I plan on buying my first Harley (my first *new* bike) this April.
<huge smile>

Can anyone tell me what the actual differences in performance are
between the Sportster 1200 and the Sportster 1200 Sport?
Is the Sport customizable just like the regular Sportster?
Will getting the Sport limit me as to aftermarket parts, or is it
pretty much the the same except for better performance?

Also, any opinions as to wether it is worth the extra grand for the
increases in performance? I've never ridden any Harley personally, so
I don't know exactly how powerful the Sportster feels to begin with,
but my neighbor has a Sportster 1200 and says that it feels incredibly
powerful even without the Sport package.

I assume that Harley won't allow test drives of the two bikes, at
least in NJ... (Fort Lee area)
This is what I hear from people I've spoken to.

If advice or information will be appreciated.
Thanks to all in advance.

There isn't much difference in performance between the two models.
Not enough to spend the bucksd on, anyway. I bought the sport model
because I liked the twin floating discs and the fully adjustable
suspension.

The sport has the suspension that you'd end up putting on the bike
aftermarket if you like handling. Get it.

imho

.boB,
concerning the 1200 Sportster Sport. A friend of mine purchased one several
months ago. The Sport version has the adjustable front and rear suspension,
floating disc brakes on the front, hotter cams, and ignition module, dual
plugged heads and some other stuff I probably don't know about. I think
it's rated at about 92 hp!! My friend told me that it was cheaper to but the
sport version, than if you bought the standard and added all the extras.

I think it's more of a looks/handling/brakes thing than a performance
issue. I prefer the sportster sport personally, it handles really well.

I'm not sure about the '99's but the '98 has 10:1 compression, single fire
ignition and dual plug heads, all from the factory. The other 1200's (base
model ans Custom) do NOT have these.

Like I said, that was the situation for the '98's.

Let me put it this way, ride these bikes on a daily basis, and I never
did meet an XL that had me remotely interested until I drove the first '98
sport off the crate, the first ten mile test ride turned into 20, and I
bought it later that day. I did a bit more fine tweaking to the top end,
but nothing drastic. In the 'more bang for your buck' category, this bike
wins over the rest of the HD line, hands down. Yeah, I traded it for a
geezer glide, but I had a lot of fun on that bike. Well worth the
money. Very significant difference between the regular XL and sport.
Accessory wise, the XL's are pretty much the same. Patrick

If you get an XL, get one without the chrome, unless you like to
wash your bike alot, and I do mean alot. It looks really great,
but he's right, better to pay extra for HP than for poser points.

However, HP and torque specs are listed essentially the same for both
engines. But we know how manufacturers sometimes fib about that.

The specs listed are 'peak' specs, what the numbers can't say is the way the
curve flows, the sports torque curve starts higher and runs stronger through the
2-4 Krpm range, where it's the most fun.
All the more I can say is that the driving experience between the two is night
and day different.
