With Americade going on just up the road, I figured I'd head there and
see what was happening. I hopped on 87 at exit 12, and headed north.
50-60-65-75-80 <g> I just love the look on peoples faces when they get
passed by Doc!
Of course this is the fastest I've had the bike since the rebuild last
fall. Sweet response even getting on it around 70!
Damn, that boat can fly!! <G>
OK so it usually took a few minutes after I hit 70 for it to cutout. I'd
gone past 4 exits and _nothing_ happening but the sun on my face, and
the wind in my hair!
I never go into Lake George by exit 21, and if you look to your right
when ya go over the bridge, you can tell how bad traffic is. It looked
bad, and it was hot as hell. And I was having too much fun by myself!
I got off at 23 and pulled into a gas station to drink some water and
gatorade. Got to see all the other bikes I wanted to see, and it was
time to head back. the ride back to 12 went as quickly and flawlessly as
the ride up. Kind of boring to some, but the mountains are very pretty
past 19.
Soo....another project I've been working on was a windshield for the
hack. An old friend loaned me a template and I got one cut for about
$20. With a little coaching, I undertook drilling the mounting holes
myself. It came out perfect! PITA to install. It took 3 of us to curve
it around, line up the holes, and then get the chrome strip on too. but,
it's on and it looks great. When Tori got home I figured to take her out
to dinner, and check out how the windshield worked for her.
We headed south on 9 and I took it slow. Most of the purpose of this is
to get the wind off her helmet, and so she doesn't have to wear goggles.
About halfway to Clifton Park her hair had blown loose and was in her
eyes, so I pulled over and fixed it for her. Went to start the bike back
up and .....nothing. Wouldn't start.
OH yea, another thing that was on the "to do" list. A new battery. Well,
at least it didn't die in Lake George.
A brief look showed the spagetti mess of wires under my seat had wiggled
down behind the battery. A couple little black spots lead me to believe
everything shorted out. I put everything back where it should be, and I
was able to get lights. But it was still too hot to be wrenching at the
side of the road with my kid. AAA RV PLUS to the rescue!
And yea, looks like I have another project to work on, and probably a
new battery too.
Oh well, it was a great day, with some very nice riding!!

Too bad ya don't live a bit closer....I still got assloads of the
"scraps" I salvaged from work for rewiring my FLH....wouldn't take but
a day or two to do a complete re-wire...so what if the colors don't
correspond to the diagram anymore <G> it looks good with that woven
black plastic wire loom shit on it, and I don't have to worry so much
about abrasions to the wiring....AND I eliminated a bunch of
uselessness when I rewired <G> (I really hated that damned junction
block under the headlight shell) now everything goes to four 20-amp
breakers mounted in the junction block's previous place, and the wires
are heavier than stock too, so less resistance to current flow.
if ya want some of them good wire scraps, let me know, and I might be
convinced to send you a bunch...it's up to you to decide which colors
go where <EG>...by the way, a flat four wire trailer wiring kit is
great for doing the rear fender portion of the wiring, car end of
wiring goes to main harness, trailer end goes to the fender.

I may have to look into the AAA thang, cause Progressive left me stranded at
midnight, said no one would come out.

All in all a nice report, thanks for the take along. C ya soon!

Someone already took care of the colors not matching, and it looks like
alot of uselessness was removed. Nothing under there matches any diagram
I have. And where the hack lights were wired in....lordy...I've never
seen such a mess.

Do you by any chance remember (actually, I don't know if you were on
aohell yet)
when I got the bright idea to wire in a toggle switch for my left
directional? Since my hand doesn't stay there I can't hold the button
in. So I had someone drill a hole in my windshield and I mounted a
toggle switch. Blinker on, blinker off.
Well, it wasn't til I was in the middle of EBF NC, at night, that I
noticed all the sparking. Seems the vibration had the back of the switch
tapping the handlebars, and had worn through the electrical tape. That
was kewl!
I've since retired from all but the most basic of wiring jobs. <g>

I had plans to put the bike in my bedroom one winter, and rewire it all.
Nobody would bring it in for me.
That was probably a blessing in disguise.

I've had really good luck with them so far, but I've only called 4 times
in 5 years. And it was mostly for my Plymouth!
I think it's only about $94 a year, and just the security of knowing I
can usually get help quickly (especially with the kid with me!) is great!
That being said, the guy yesterday was a dickhead. A sheriff had stopped
and put in a "AAA Sheriff's call" so said the towing guy. (never heard
of such a thing) Then told me that they only tow bikes when a cop calls,
and at the Sheriff's rate, which was gonna cost me $50. I told him a
call to AAA to report him was free from my cell phone. Never heard a man
whine so much in my life.
Threw him a $20 and told him to grow a set.
Course the bike was safely back in the driveway when I did that.

Might be sooner that ya think! I'm heading your way the last week of June.
I was gonna e-mail youse guys as soon as I get some firm dates.
Consider yourself warned!
<g>
I don't recall hearing of that one, but this covers every vehicle I'm
in. And a spouse, if I had one.
I know I can get a card for my daughter too, when she hits 16. Presuming
that she'll be driving.
That won't happen, but it will cover any vehicle she rides in too, and
give us 5 more calls a year. lol
What a fucktard.

Boy, is that good news or what? Glad you got that little problem worked out.

NOW, get the rider fairing and windscreen back on and see what the airflow does to your pigtail. It really does make a big difference to the rider while riding in the rain. <g>

Might want to check on the eye protection requirement, even with a windscreen, particularly for a passenger. I think NY says you/passengers have to wear eye protection whether you have a windscreen or not. Course I could be all wet. Besides, it's not worth a hospital visit to get a 'speck' out of an eye. (Sun glasses work, and they do make light clear glasses too.)

Well damn! The new HD batteries are really good, and you don't have to worry about battery acid overflow tubes and/or getting acid all over the frame etc.

That is the same plan I have AAA RV PLUS. Plus my insurance has tow service and HOG has one free one per year. Never had to use any of them though... course now that I have said that... <g>

Don't forget you have to get over here so we can do the brakes on the hack.

And *THAT* is what it's all about! <g>

I'll second that. I used the trailer harness on my '77. Works great.
randy
OMG I was sooo happy it was that! I mean considering all the things it
could have been (that would have had me calling on the Bear and Bill G.
wrenching team!) Yea, I am a happy camper!
Now I have to practice keeping it at a decent pace, and ignoring what my
speedo says. Still freaks me when it says 90 mph!

Yea, I know. I just like pulling your leg about it. <g>
Look...
http://home.earthlink.net/~sidecarsybil/images/SC.jpg
I had it on for almost 3 seasons, but would pop it off for local riding.
But!!! look how the shifter isn't any where near the fairing! I still
can't figure that out.

Crap, I didn't think about that! I'll look into it.
I may look into a helmet shield like you have then. I have 4 pairs of
goggles and none of them are comfortable for her over her glasses.

You noticed that, huh? <g> I'm afraid my loverly chrome heat shields are
beyond repair. OH darn.
The new HD battery is what I am going to be looking at. Probably pick
one up this week!

Depending on the # of days I get "child free"....what are you doing Sun.
June 26th in the afternoon?
And maybe the 27th depending on how much trouble we run into?

You know it!
Barb's last day of school is the 24th and we have a wedding to go to on the 25th.
Sunday June 26th is good for me, and so is Monday the 27th.
You listening Bill_G??
Kewl! I'll e-mail ya when I get these dates solid!
> You listening Bill_G??
And just where has he been hiding!?
