They have a shaft that comes out of the top of the device to which an
arm is attached. The arm then attaches to the bike's frame by way of a
rod that must pass through a hole (that you must cut) in the front
number plate. As you turn the handle bars the rod & arm make the shaft
on the device turn.
If anyone has one of these devices for sale (new or used), or knows
where I can find them or what companies make them, I would really
appreciate the information.

The dampener you're describing sounds like the WER dampener. They are
available from DNA Racing or from the sourece, Drew Smith's Works
Enduro Rider.
Good luck finding *any* kind of dampener used, *and* for sale. They're
scarce as hen's teeth.

Works Enduro Rider makes one I wouldn't ride without. It has saved my
head loose CR more than once. They are approx $300. They can be
reached at (908) 637-6385

Didn't we do this? Dampeners wet things, Dampers slow things down.

Because the folks who ride with them will never ride without them
again. The WER can be taken from bike to bike just by changing the
mounting plate. Mine started life on my DR, went on my KDX, and now
lives happily on my make pretend CRE.

no, I don't get a commission.

I could be wrong but I think Drew ships them same day from stock.
Steve
Used ones? ;) I meant that used ones are scarce....

Sorry, I got low grades in reading comprehension.

The Scotts may be moved from bike to bike too! *And* we don't have
to cut the number plate. :-P Oh, but we do have to weld this face
ripper thingy on though. ;)

Scotts makes (O.K. they sell it uner their name, Ohlins makes it) the
one that sits on top of the triple clamp. (818) 248-bike
WER makes the one that sits on top of the fender (908) 637-6385
I've used the WER, it seemed ok. The bike had it when I got it, and I
never took it off to compare.
Aaron!

No doubt! Go ahead and spend the bucks! I consider mine "safety
equipment".
The WER is a popular one ($275-300) and so is the Scotts ($400 but
much more adjustable).

You could try a couple more clicks of comprehension dampening.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha...oh, gosh.

I think Scotts bought the rights to it from the original
designer/manufacturer. They were called a "Unic Damper"

Naturally I end up with the "other" on-top-of-the-triple-clamp dampener,
with the great big words G.P.STABILIZER MADE IN U.S.A. machined on top.
It's internally adustable by little "jets" that easily pop in and out,
uses 20-50 Valvolne, and the mounting is less portable than the Scotts or
WER...
keith - xr400r - I like it anyhow
My son has a WER damper on his KDX (came with the bike), I sprung for
the Scotts on my KTM. Both do a good job but IMHO the Scotts is well
worth the extra cost (approx $100) . WER appears to have only high
speed damping and less adjustability, difficult to adjust on the trail,
and difficult to move between bikes. The Scotts can be adjusted on the
fly, better mounting, better overall damping. Range of damping from
center and amount are easily adjusted.
Bottom line, they both stop headshake and make it easier to ride in
rocks, etc. When I hit a long rocky section i reach down, turn one
click stiffer and go for it. my son doesn't have that flexibility. If
my son was going to by another damper he would go for the Scotts.
MXInsaneAsylum,
I think you're starting to lose it. You must resist when the men in
white coats come get you. They'll take you to a place and make you look
at KTMs all day. It's a very BAD place.
