I have a 1984 Honda 200x that has a big bore high compression kit
installed. I bought the bike this way and have ridden it several
times. Runs great! I have a VERY hard time kicking it over though. I
have had lots of kick-start bikes but I can't get used to the 200x
forward kick, and the high compression motor doesn't help.
Does anyone out there have experience putting a 185s/200s motor into
a 200x frame? Will it bolt right in? Will the 200x exhaust pipe fit
the 185/200 motor? Will the 200x carb bolt to the 185/200 motor and
will it need rejetting? I like the suspension on the 200x and don't
want to give it up. I have ridden a 1980 185 with pull-start and
compression release and have no trouble starting it.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I had a 85 200x. Easiest starting motor I've ever seen. Didn't even have to get
off the seat. Just push on the lever and it would start.

It was stolen when I was in school. The police found it a couple of weeks
later. The motor had been swapped into a 185s frame. If I remember right it all
lined up. If that's the case then maybe it will swap the other way(185 motor to
200x frame).

The ATC motor has a bigger fin cylinder, stronger 5-speed gearbox, no
compression release and the forward kick starter. The cases are
identical however, so there's no reason an XR engine wouldn't bolt in
place. I don't see that as the best solution for your problem tho.

Would a rear kick motor even work in that frame? If it would, then your
motor could be converted with an XR sidecover and kickstart shaft. If
the HC is the problem, then just swap in a lower compression piston. A
compression release might help. An automatic (kickstart activated)
release isn't going to work with the forward kick, but you could
fabricate a manual release by getting a top cover from an XR.

Exhaust pipe and carb should interchange, with maybe some rejetting. But
again, you should be able to get by with less than a total engine swap.

No matter what you do, it will always handle like a shopping cart full
of bowling balls. Sell it and get a motorcycle before you get hurt.
BTW- I know a guy who had a 200S with a Honda 360 road bike motor in
it and a Mojave with a GPZ 550 motor in it. Right now there is an LT
250 with a GS 550 motor in it for sale in my town. I guess you can put
any motor in any frame if you try hard enough.

I wasn't thinking of putting a rear kick motor in the 200x. I was
thinking of using a 185s or 200s ATC motor with pull-start and
compression release. They seem to be easier to start.
In regards to the danger of riding a three wheeler. I don't race,
climb impossible hills, or jump. I think the three wheeler is safe for
me to ride in this style. I mostly trail ride in the desert and I find
the three wheeler to be easy to ride in hard pack/rocky/sandy terrain.
If I could afford a quad I would get one but this is a small budget
operation.
Thanks for all the info, Tim

OK Then, yes the ealier pull-start engine has the same cases, so should
bolt right in. I'm still not sure that's the best solution though unless
you just happen to have a good one available cheap. Again, a better
solution might be to first make sure your engine is in proper tune, then
swaping some individual parts rather than the entire engine.
