BTW...Pentons and other old sachs engined bikes normally fired right up....it
wasn't until a friend got a newer KTM mid 80's that I heard that KTM stood for
"Kick Ten Minutes" and then
"Kick Ten More".
Are they still that bad?

My Katoom is the easiest starting bike I have ever owned, in gear no less.

Yes, them Jap girls are just too easy. You can
just slap at them and they are bubbling and ready to go.
Now..take an Austrian gal.... ain't no easy way
around getting them babys going... Gotta get 'em
sloppy wet and work on them for at least KTwentyM
minutes. But whoa..watch out when you do.

From what I have seen the new KTMs are not as bad. I had a 85 KTM 500. Gawd!
That thing, by comparison, makes the Swedish Woods Princess, on a crabby day,
seem like an after-thought to start.
I actually sprained my ankle, badly, starting that KTM. Walked funny for
several months. Monster compression, goofy kick starter. Bing tickler carb,
tickle, kick, kick, kick - snort, backfire, kick kick, - lay on ground panting,
kick, kick varoom. (inevitable stall) - "sheeeeeit".
But by then I was wasted. 85 KTM would have been a swell choice for a
dead-engine start...

in your words. That's just about what she is too....but get her in the open
desert, and she becomes an angel. Just can't let her stall tho....

Great story! Now my wife knows why I'm up half the night reading RMD. I noticed
at the bottom you had a '72 SL350. For those who don't know, it was basicaly a
Honda 350 street bike with high fenders and pipe and a few other cosmetics. My
friend had one and he was about 5'3" and weighed a whopping 100# (about 1/4 of
the machine). He had to push it over to a curb (with help) to get going on it,
then, if the traffic light was red, he'd have to roll over to the curb to stop.
Once he came upon a red light and no curb and he crashed. It took a couple of
pedestrians to help him get started again. His parents thought he was just
riding it in a field near their house, but of course he was riding all over
town with it. (We were only 14 or 15 at the time). Once, while riding around on
the other side of town, some pranksters tossed a half full (or empty, depending
on your point of view) beer can out the window of a passing car. The can hit
him right in the chest, and with both vehicles travelling at about 60mph, the
impact crushed the can and blew beer all over him. When he went home, his
parents threatened to send him to reform school for drinking beer at such a
tender young age and refused to believe the obviously fabricated story about
riding his bike out on the street. The bike was sold immediately.
As soon as he turned sixteen, now weighing in at a hefty 110#, he bought an old
Harley shovelhead. Flashfoward WAY too many years: he's now a semi-respectable
computer nerd who rides a Ducati 996. Probably still only weighs 130# though!

The '85 KTM 500 had more in the bottom end than any bike I've ridden. You
could rev it if you wanted to, but that wasn't necessary. Just keep on
shifting! Suspension was excellent. No complaints. Bike did not feel overly
heavy once under way, but really held a line. I can see why it would be a
"Desert Angel". The seat though, do you still have a stocker - and ride it
distances in the desert? My '85 was just breaking in when I sold the bike in
1997. Any of this sound familiar? I managed to break a triple clamp - had to
search most of old Europe for a replacement. Finally found one in Georgia.
There's something about those sexy Europeans... You earn those rewards.
Love/hate, but they keep you coming back for more...
