Hey all

Anyone else do the Suzuki School Of Motocross at Carlsbad ? My wife
found my Suzuki School Of Motocross shirt in a box a month or so ago
and it brought back lots of memories. I did the school in March 1983
when Wayne Boyer was at the helm. I remember watching Suzuki Factory
rider Clint Hardick pound laps on the main track while we did drills
on the whoops at the top of the hill.

The Suzuki School Of Motocross was a lot of fun for a frost-bitten kid
from Canada in March 1983 - I met riders from all over the US and had
a great time. Still have the blue binder too - motocross techniques
and bike set-ups etc. I'm 49 years old now and still ride off-road
when I can. Gone are the days of pounding laps at motocross tracks but
single-track in the local forest is still a buzz. Love to hear from
anyone else who did the school and their experiences.

Wow, I don't have time to expose this memory very well, but I just have to
share this....

In 88 (I think it was maybe 87>), I rode Brad Lackey's (spelling?) 1st
annual Christmas gran prix, the sun of a beech used everything but the
parking lot and the skateboard park for HIS track, lol. 45 minute heat for
us beginners, I made almost 3 laps, when I fell off in the TV MX course, the
big downhill... we were going uphill on that part. it was wild!

My 1st and last race I ever entered at least as a grown up, lol. BTW I got
the holeshot, to about turn before this friggin long straight. I didn't
have high gearing, I was in the Navy, I didn't have much back then let alone
a place to store the bike, lol. I was decent rider on shorter tracks, but I
got spooked at WFO in 5th or anything. Oh, if anyone was there, I was
wearing jeans, borrowed helmet and borrowed chest protector from Brother who
rides Suzuki and I was on a 3 year old Yamaha 250. I know I looked funny as
hell in my trials boots too! I think I still have the hat, we got for
entering, I know my brother does, saw it in his shop last time I visited.
He loves and still races.

I got to watch a race the month before they closed that track up in or near
LA? dang just forgot the name of that place, that race watching my bro, I
decided to find a used MX so I could enter and ride too... What was that
riding area in south sandiego (northern Tijuana), that was a lot of fun
riding there.

Might have shared this on this NG, years ago, not sure? hope it isn't a
repost. LOL.

Chris,
A buddy and I made to CA for that school. Brand new RM-250 waiting
when we got to the track. Blackwell was the instructor and we had a
blast. Sure with I had my shirt and books but they are long gone now.

Hey Chris,
I never officially did the School of Motocross but I helped occasionally
when
Bob Elliot would ask. When we where testing we would stay at the Qualis
Inn
where the school would stay and sometimes hang out with the students. I
suppose
living in Canada Ross "rollerball" Pederson must have been one of your
favorite
riders. I sometimes traveled with him and his mechanic. Don't know if
your on
facebook or not but alot of us old timers communicate that way. If you
check it
out look me up. Out

I drive a pick up to Carlsbad from Madison, WI in 1980 with a buddy, I was 19. Wayne Boyer, & Elliott ??? were instrustors. The Carlsbad Freeway was a challenge on a 125, I desperatly wanted to switch to a 250 but not an option. Great time in my life. By large, there are just a handful of us who have been to this program. That is so weird. I was there at that school at that same time. March 1983. We probably had the same class. Great memories. I still have the book but couldn't even begin to tell you where the jersey is.

I was there along with 3 of my team mates in November 1978. I was a member of Team Army and we were sponsored by Suzuki. Mark Blackwell and Wayne Boyer were the 2 instructors. Mark Blackwell was the most fluid rider I ever saw ride a bike, he really flowed with the machine. We were practicing front wheel landing at the bottom of the downhill, I went right thru the fence, trashed the RM250, so I walked back up the hill, no more 250s so I used my personal 250, which was much better. Akira Watanabe even showed up to ride with us, hauling on a,125. Getting up the first day to go run the track wasn't on my agenda, we were beat having been on the road racing for 2 months and were enroute back to Ft Hood when we stopped for the school.
