Howdy,

I have been searching for a downpipe for a GT80 or MX80,
old style that threads onto the cylinder. I've had absolutely
no luck which didn't surprise me at first but this was a popular
mod in the day. Been looking for months with no luck.

Any ideas? Flattrack.com, ebay, just googling it have found nothing.

It will end up on my RD60.

Go fast. Take chances.

Actually I have one of these:
http://50ccs.blogspot.com/2008/12/yamaha-rd60.html

but I'm looking for a downpipe expansion chamber for
it and a gt80 should fit.

Any chance of grafting the stock head pipe to the down pipe of a scooter?
There seem to be quite a few expansion chambers available.

Good idea. I won't use the stock pipe as I want to be able to put it
back the way it was but I can come up with another beater stock
pipe. Some of those look like they could work, thanks.

This one is listed as for (among others) the RD50.
https://www.treatland.tv/derbi-WEAK-ENDS-pipe-p/weak-ends-derbi-pipe.htm

Lots of cool choices.

My first expansion chamber experiment and experience came from
adapting a MX125 pipe to fit my '68 YL2CM.
The engine didn't have any low end after the mod, but it ran like a
bat out of hell during the 1500 rpms of the power band. I picked up
20 mph on top end. It worked so well that I didn't care that it ran
down the wrong side of the bike. :-)
(This pipe, completely unmuffled, was on the bike when I hit that
1600# Charolais bull.)

Good Riding and Fabricating to you!
Jim

Wrong RD50
http://www.mopedarmy.com/photos/brand/16/11913/

The treatland guys Dave pointed to are on the hunt for me. Looks
like there is an RD80 Yurp version that is maybe available and has
the same cylinder mount style.

Still working on it.

Hey, Mike!

I have a JT1 and if memory serves, the pipe was the same when Yami
went from 60cc's to the GT 80cc in 1973. Anyway, the reason I say
that is that I've seen a bunch of the expansion chambers for sale on
eBay over the years when searching Yami JT1 or JT2... And I think
there were 3 years of production for the JT1 and only 2 for the GT so
your odds would increase...

Just a thought!

That would probably work. However, I've been busy. A YSR50 pipe
has the same thread on attachment at the head. So I bought one.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DG-Exhaust-Pipe-Yamaha-YSR-50-14-4011-/130536222854?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3909520100063620110

Two cuts in it got it into a shape that fits. Just welded it back together
in the
right place last night. Need a bracket fabbed at the back yet. Need a
side stand fabbed as the centerstand can't be there anymore and that's all
the
bike came with.

I'll post a pic when it's done.

So my son took a couple. It's still not 100% done as the bracket to hold
it to the swingarm bolt needs a couple of holes and some paint to look cool
and the sidestand mount for the bicycle sidestand is semi-done (but works).

But the pipe works pretty nice. From 8500-9000 it makes enough horsepower
to get me up to 50mph or so. From idle to 8500 it goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaa
and barely keeps running. Tons of fun to try to ride. Reminds me of
roadracing
125 two strokes but slower.

HEY Mike,

VERY SIMPLE. You can use the RD50 down pipe. I have the same bike and I have down pipe on it and also I can make them really easy. Type a search for Yamaha RD50 and you will find one that bolts on the RD60. If you own a GT80 they have pipes as well. I use a RD80 down pipe on my GT80. Also you can take a GT80 pipe and flip it and cut it and use that as a start for the pipe and add on to it. Email me if you want more info. ALOH...@MSN.COM
