Ways to deal with the excessive heat generated by the Honda XR’s series.

This write up is on how to get your XR series Honda to run cooler.
Heat is a by-product of combustion. Most of this heat is concentrated
in the cylinder head area. There are several schools of thought on what to do
with this heat. Some feel the answer is an oil cooler. Of course, any way you
can cool the oil of a “Hi performance” engine will help its durability but in
this instance you would be solving the symptom and not addressing the cause.
Using the oil as the sole source to reduce the cylinder temp is not the most
efficient way. The oil has to flow over the head, pick up the heat, flow
through the engine (passing some of the heat it picked up to the lower parts
of the engine), flow to the oil cooler and finally dissipate the heat.
The best way to disapate this heat is through the cooling fins. In this way
the heat does not have to be transferred to the oil, through the engine, to
the oil cooler and then passed to the air.
At Al Baker’s XR’s Only we weld (12) extensions of “high grade 6061
Aluminum” on the cylinder head fins. By doing this, we increase the cylinder
head fin surface area by at least 55% and improve the dissipation of this
heat. Now the heat goes from the cylinder head, to the cooling fins and is
dissipated to the air, not to the lower parts of the engine.

This mod rocks.......
I had it done with a very short turnaround time and the quality was exceptional,
combined with an oil cooler I dropped nearly 30 degree's.

Why do some race engines wrap the header pipe with insulation tape?

an alternative....get a water-cooled bike...we have the technology.

My guess...

I understand that header wrap is for keeping the engine compartment temps down,
like too keep it cooler under the hood. Has to do with the starter, alt.,
etc...

I dont think wraping a bike's exhaust would do you any good... EXCEPT... To
possible keep you from getting burnt.

OK... There is my GUESS.

But, the SuperMotard XR is just a sweet looking bike!

Anyone else wonder why, since Deja News offers spam-free web-based
newsreading, that this post didn't delete itself?

Relax, Robert...it is on-topic and I don't find it offensive, just
ironic.

It also keeps the heat from the exhaust from the engine, at least it
seems to help on little XRs. The exhaust pipe on mine gets way hotter
than the part of the engine it is so close to.

This also keeps the temperature of the exhaust gases hotter so that they
flow faster. In doing so, it effectively shortens the pipe.

It would also keep lots of heat off the front of the engine; important if
the engine already runs near its thermal limits... IE: Big air-cooled
thumper. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find that wrapping the exhaust on
an XR-650 would lower the oil temperature more than an oil-cooler would.

I know I tried some on a race car I used to run. I was having extreme
overheating problems. I had gone to a special 4 core radiator, louvered the
crap outta my hood, and so on and so forth.

The claim was that this stuff kept the heat in the headers where it belonged.
It did work. My overheating problem pretty much went away. And the exhaust
coming out of the tailpipe was impressively hot.
