Here is a chart I've used:

Hate to sound like an idiot, but what do all the numbers actually mean???

Thanks!

In my way of thinking the math in this table is done backwards. Divide
the rear by the front and you end up with the final drive ratio
expressed "front to back".

For example:

52 tooth rear divided by a 13 tooth front = 4:1, (52/13 = 4) the front
sprocket revolves exactly four times for every one time the rear does.

Dividing the other way, (13/52 = 0.25) simply gives you the ratio
expressed as a decimal fraction. For every revolution of the front the
rear will travel 0.25 (1/4) of a revolution.

Six of one , half dozen of the other.....

Please note that fitting a 20 tooth front and a 80 tooth rear (or a
40/120) will yield the same ratio (4:1) but there are physical
limitations we must deal with. That would be one mighty big set of
sprockets and more chain to deal with.

Oops, should read 30/120............. or 40/160

I like the numbers to all be less than 1 but I understand your reasoning
so here is the inverse ratios chart.
