The new KTM LC8 engine
Mattighofen, 7.September 2000
Which we know: the well-known-follow-rich LC4 is engine, which is
with KTM the base for whole product series. Briefly to the memory:
LC4 620 Supercompetition
LC4 640 hard Enduro inclusive various Special edition (Six Days)
LC4 640 Supermoto
LC4 620 Supercomp Supermoto
LC4 640 Adventure
LC4 660 Rally
And the Duke.
Which we yet do not know: the new LC8 is engine generation.
The starting point was clear. The KTM philosophy following where to
KTM drauf is, should also KTM in it be had the next generation also a
washgenuine KTM own engine to become.
The prerequisites were the best, which one can introduce oneself: a
production factory with one of the most modern test stand centers of
Europe, developed evenly again. With static and dynamic driving test
stands and not fewer than 4 top modern engine test centers no
criticism could be practiced at the basic conditions. Technical
designers and attempt engineers were allowed to start working.....
A leichtgewicht, asks!
It applied to determine only more: What do the customers require
themselves of KTM? Inquiries and market studies resulted in quite
unique: KTM is admits for lightweighty, for versatile, durable, puristic
and surely somewhat self-willed motorcycles. So it is to also remain.
Thus - an EASY ONE, to compact two-cylinder wennx27s goes with the
smallest weight per horsepower, versatile, durably, puristic and with a
character, please!
Before KTM decided for the concept of some v-Zweizylinders, various
other possibilities were taken under the magnifying glass and rejected
again.
In the summer 1998 with the construction one began.
Exactly on day of the solar eclipse on 5 August 1999 the new KTM
two-cylinder ran for the first time at the test stand. The solar eclipse
does not have there naturally with KTM more interested...
One calls it LC8
The engine LC8 baptized not least that already well admitted and very
successful LC4 engine to honours.
The LC8 characteristics:
It is the most compact and easiest 2-Zylinder, which one can buy! No
more than 56 kilograms. That is around 20 (!) Kilos fewer as a BMW
engine and fewer around 17 Kilos than the Suzuki engine in the Cagiva
navigator or the engine of the Honda Varadero.
75° V, DOHC, 6-Gang circuit, e-starter, forging piston, hydraulically
operated multiple disk clutch, capacity from 800 to 1000 cm3,
carburetors or injection, performance output of 80 HP to more as 100
HP and a maximum speed more than 200 km/h.
Base for many KTM of models
The LC8 engine is to become the base of different KTM motorcycles.
KTM thinks already about the following models all with LC8 engine -
more or less loud:
An easy Reiseenduro (the 950 Adventure, already presented on the
Intermot 2000)
Aggressive Rallygeraet (to see with the Dakar 2002)
A noble Duke successor (of which fair your lord shank will first greet?
And perhaps a quick road running device? Who knows
Much is still located in the asterisks. Safe is however one:
K... compromiseless small weight
T... typically high-quality noble chassis
M... more to be than absolute must, does not come not drauf!
Hold for look out!
FROM THE SECRET DIARY OF THE DEVELOPMENT BOSS
Now for the first time emerged. The secret diaries venture of the
development boss. Also high-explosive exposures, which will shake
the motorcycle world. Here a first small single dump:
Before we decided for a V2-Konzept, we studied all possible other
concepts, at least 8 different. A main criterion with the selection was
the
so-called crate measure, i.e., as large would have a crate to be that
the
respective engine clean-fits. It gave parallel twin, to transverse
querboxer, longitudinal laengsboxer, v-concepts with different angles.
And then still another abnormal engine with 2 crankshafts
consecutively, control-rubbed and in driving direction diagonal cylinder
and cylinder head. The carburetors were
on the right of lateral, the exhaust manifolds left laterally.
This engine had the smallest crate measure, was however very ugly
and because of the impulseimpulse impulse (stockhammer in the
building of engines would have therefore either itself or us
killed probably both in reverse order) we rejected it.
On the day of the solar eclipse the V 75°-Murl the first time at the
engine
test stand ran.
I have yourself on urgent recommendation of my better half on the day
(obligation s) vacation to take to have, because of the solar eclipse
look
at, is however immediately geduest as the sun again rauskam into the
company, which engine anstarten for the first time has me far more
interested.
That brown Juergen (name of the editorship modified) and I flew then
also times to Japan, because of that
Carburetor and the clutch.
Because of the carburetors we had to carry a piece forward of the
framework, so that one can see whether everything clean-fits.
That became all much too heavily, therefore we the piece framework
then from wood of the carpenter make to have let, nevertheless have
we there over there (with other things) constantly
40 kg with us dragged, that was no fun.
At the moment we drive continuous tests with the first Lc8.
Those looks terrible, is a correct erlkoenig, we everything
draufgehaengt, which fit halfway: Rally tank, Rallye lining, a piece of
a
Lc4 tank, in the back drauf a Duke tail, which paints whole still black.
The thing looks so together-repaired that I call it for me Franconia
frankenstein.
Drives itself however super+madly.

It was called "LC8"
The engine was christened LC8
not least in respect of the well known
and equally successful LC4 engine.
Characteristics of the LC8:
She is the most compact and lightest 2-cylinder that you can buy!
And weighs no more than 56kg. That's 20 (!)kg less than a
BMW engine and 17kg less than a Suzuki engine in the
Cagiva Navigator or the Honda's Varadero engine.
75° V, DOHC, 6 gear transmission, E-starter, forged pistons,
hydraulic multi-disc clutch, displacement from 800 to 1000cc,
carburetor or injection system, a horse power range of 80 HP
to over 100 HP and a maximal speed of over 200 km/h.
Basis for many KTM Models
The LC8 engine should form the basis of many different KTM motorcycles.
KTM is already thinking about the following models
all equipped with the LC8 engine :
A light travel enduro (the "950 Adventure", already introduced at
the Intermot 2000)
An aggressive rally machine (to be revealed at Dakar 2002)
An exquisite successor to the Duke
(at which trade show will his lordship greet this beauty?)
And maybe a fast street bike? Who knows ......

The Dakar version only at '02 ?!?
That means that Richard Sainct will ride a Single in '01 ?
Anyway, BMW Flat-Twins was a flop last Dakar.
