I recently installed new jets in the carb of my XR400 after also installing a thumper insert. Jets were as
suggested by Baja Designs. I currently have the throttle stop backed all the way out and the idle is still
to fast. How do I fix the problem?

I have A XR400 and I had to do some mods to get it to perform like I
wanted it to.
First I installed a thumper racing baffle turndown then I put in a white
brothers air filter.I put in a 62 pilot jet and a 62 main jet and shaved
the slide down .020 of a inch.It now runs very well and I can put the idle
screw any where i need it.The best mods seem to be the thumper racing turn
down and the 62 pilot jet.Have fun with your XR,I do.

Have you guys experimented with float level adjustments on the XR400?
Mine runs well at most times but suffers excessive richness in some
situations (on back wheel at balance point and on rough ground at medium
revs at full throttle).

I'm about to try lowering the float level and was wondering if anyone
else had.

There's an article about just that very thing in the October 9th
edition of Cycle News......

Seems like that would be a little lean. ;)

Yup - just lower it a little. I did mine and it almost completely
eliminated the bogging problems (during hard acceleration on bumpy
ground).

This is the trick (machining the slide 20 thou) that Bob Strode
came up with to fix the jetting but he was able to lean out and get
greatly
increased fuel mileage as well.

Sounds like Thumper may still be dialing in their jetting.

I installed the following: 160 jet, 60 jet, thumper racing insert,
twin air filter, baja design light kit, moose skid plate, shark fin
disk protector & old XR digital speedo. The bike runs great ! I had
a XR-250 with similar mods but used a super-trapp(too loud) & Scott's
modified suspendsion. I like the 400 better way more power and alot
less noise. I would like to try the slide modification but I think I
will wait until Honda puts a O.E.M. part out for it. For now the
supension feels O.K. but seat seams a little hard. Good Luck with
your XR. Oh I ride in Mass - NH border.
