Ride" due to a whole bunch of weird shit that happened - and not
mostly to us:
The ride was set up to take a new KLR650 guy around the area
west of here. After an 85-mile ride through Utah the last
day when we were there in May, Jeff's plan semed fun if my
butt could take it. Plus, riding with an XR650L and a KLR650
while on my nimble KDX220 seemed like just the confidence
boost I needed!
I'll spare the gory details of the fact I trucked my bike to
the trailhead (~25 miles) when Deeney et.al. rode from their
houses, but one minute, no one in my rear-view...then Jeff
showes up, guns it past me...well, I let everyone pass in the
tight twisties - just to get stopped by a gravel truck ;)
Geared up at the trailhead to Moody Hill while our crue got
to experience the awesome sound of an unrestricted 450CRF.
Nearest track? 60 miles away. he sounded awesome. I put my
'Loud Sucks' sticker in my window, and geared up. I thought
I fully locked my truck up (This trailhead is 'muy popular')
The route? Moody Hill to Crystal Mtn. to Buckhorn...to
Ballard Rd. then lower Donner Pass (check out leaning trees
for another bridge replacement), back to Buckhorn, then to W.
White Pine to (err)...Old Flowers Road to Pingree Park
Road....Hwy 14 (Poudre Canyon) to Jim's
Cabin...break...Manhatten Road north of Rustic to Kelley
Flats 4x4 road to 'secret stash' to Hwy 14 again...Stove
Prairie road to Buckhorn...to my truck.
Tore up Moody hill with Jeff(BRP) & Jay(KLR), to find out
Jeff lost his gas-cap gasket at the gas-up in Ft. Collins, so
it was spilliing all over his tank. Lighting up a cig, I
inspected the area to determine he needed another latex
substance to repair the cap. Not having any condoms, he
resorted to an old bicycle tube to repair it. Fixd.
On over Crystal Mtn. back to Buckhorn was uneventful, except
for the fact I missed Jeff & Jay at the Ballard Road. WAIT
IN PLAIN SIGHT FOR YOUR RIDE-MATES WHEN YOU TURN OFF!!!
I pass the Ballard turn, and up ahead I find a potential
hippie keg party in the early throes of action. Seeing only
dudes, and a fat girl in a mumu, I cruise past when Jeff cuts
me off. "Dude, we were at the Ballard Rd.!" Go back past the
hippies, but a while down the road, Jeff goes past a house,
and a dog darts out from the side of the road - right in
front of me chasing Jeff! Hard on the brakes (rear, mostly),
I almost punted that poor bastard into the woods (45-deg
slide @ 40 MPH?) Missed him when he turned around, went,
"OH, F-" and scooted to the right of my rear tire. So, up
Ballard Rd. to the singletrack that takes you to the next
bridge we're replacing.
Here's where the fun began: Jeff trucked up our club's
chainsaw. I had told him about the fact there was a
leaner-tree against a dead tree, directly over where our new
bridge would be (and the old one). We checked it out, and,
despite my mild protest, he decided they needed to come down.
Cutting the leaner resulted in a shorter leaner-tree, so it
was determined the dead one would be sacrificed. It bears
mention that a young girl (13-14?, hispanic) paid us a visit,
wondering where her parents were (WTF?). They hiked ahead of
her (~2 miles) and she didn't know where they were. While
cutting ensued, I stopped a hispanic-looking 4-some, and
inquired if they were missing someone. They initially said
no, and after some pushing, I was asked if she was young. I
said, "Quince, young" and they clammed up. Soon after, 2
kids, ~16 or so, on a KDX200 and CR125 came down the
switchbacks. They seemed like typical kids (riding in jeans
and tees, but wore helmets!), but weren't the sharpest knives
in the drawer. At the same time, and older hippie looking
guy walks up shirtless carrying a Jack Russel Terrier. He
didn't like the kids(the terrier) - seemed fine with us,
though. The kids rode on, we chatted with Frasier, then
commenced felling. Uninterrupted, the sight of a 2.5' dia.,
35' tree falling in just the right spot with a 1.5', 45'
leaner going with it?
FUKKKKKIIINNNG AWWWWWWESOMMMME!
It fell just where we wanted it, the leaner fell on the old
bridge, and the old bridge DID NOT SNAP! We cleared what was
left, and took off back to the Ballard road and Buckhorn!
On the way, I was leading. Came across our young bucks by
the side of the road. CR125 guy blew a corner and took out a
barbed-wire fence. Scratched up elbows and wobbly knees,
(Yeah, dude! I can't walk so good, but look at the fence I
took out!") we directed them to Buckhorn and got the hell out
of there!
Over to White Pine and (Err) was uneventful, except for Jay &
his KLR trying to get through unrelentless rock gardens. He
did great, however (w/ our help), and seems to be a future
dirtrider-maximus!
Old Flowers to Pingree Park was fun, fast, and cooling (it
was 100deg in the valley). Despite dust, it was a boring-ass
ride.
At the Hwy 14/Pingree jct, Jeff befriended a USFS ranger, who
said there was a ~5 acre forest fire near the Old Flowers
Road! East of us, we didn't know, but we were concerned
nonetheless. Yikes!
At this point Jay left to head back, and Jeff & I headed to
Rustic for a break, and refill our water. As soon as we
turned onto Hwy 14, we were audibly assaulted by 40 HD
riders. Jeff rides w/ ear plugs...I'm considering it. At
Rustic, Jeff stops in the middle of the road, no one behind
us, to let the myriad of pedestrians cross the road to their
RV's cars, etc. Traffic clears, Jeff goes, just as a HD
pulls out(BOTB), into our lane (their turning radius is
legendary), Jeff cuts me off, I'm into the dirt. "WTF? Was
that?" I ask. Jeff shakes his head. At our break spot,
there's a mouse trap. It had a mouse...or, what used to be.
Apparently there's a strain of beetles that totally clean a
dead thing, except for fur and bones, and that's what was
there. After some microwaved taquitos and a Coke(and waiting
out a blessed rainstorm), we headed to Rustic and the
Manhatten Road to the Kelly Flats 4x4 road/trail thing, which
is a big Jeep road. Riding through NO dust for the first
time, Jeff and I enjoyed a nice, technical ride through some
of Poudre Canyon's finest. I thought it was smooth, with
some techie uphills, some sections reminding me of the ATV
trail to Iron Mtn., ID...until we had to go down...
There definitely were some sketchy downhill sections: loose
soil, loose rock, and relentless. For the first time, I felt
front-brake-fade. I must have heated up my front goo quite a
bit, resulting in a rear-swapping high-side (yes) that had me
respecting the braking power of a 4-stroke. Nonetheless, we
made it to another section of trail - that really...wasn't a
trail. A few hundred yards from the end of the
slot-canyon-like singletrack, I almost ran into Jeff, who
stopped abruptly. In our way, were 2 (3?) couples camping -
right on the trail!? They scrambled to move chairs,
equipment so we could get by, but I was transfixed by the
girl in the white shirt w/ big boobies (sorry, no
picture...that was the 'boobie' deal in the teaser. you guys
are SOOOOO typical...). Having removed goggles and
sunglasses during the decent into the slot, Jeff started up,
and I followed, but not before giving the white boobie-girl a
wink, to which she responded with a shrug and a smile.
Shucks...
Back out on Hwy 14, we stopped to air up tires, and recharge
for the final stretch to Stove Prairie and Buckhorn. Humming
along on my 2-stroke, I found out a KDX 220, with 13:51
gearing, absolutely sings in 6th gear at 47 MPH! The sound
was fantastic, and the stares coming from the kayakers,
picnicers, etc., told me they appreciated the music as well!
Cornering towards the Stove Praire Road, something was up.
Pulling off the road, there was an ambulance, and a helo.
Considering my truck was only 20 miles up the road, and the
alternate route was ~50 miles, Jeff and I waited it out.
Turns out, a sportbiker, new, got taken out by a vehicle that
crossed into his lane. We watched as he was taken out of the
amby, loaded into the helo, and saw the helo take off.
Actually, it was pretty cool. Best wishes to the biker.
Jeff beat everyone to the punch waiting to get on the Stove
Prairie Road (bastard, I was taking Pics), but managed to get
between 2 fast cars ahead, and a slow truck pulling an RV
behind. I was on Stove by myself, just truckin' along the
twisties, salivating over the fact I had beer in my
truck....mmmmmmmmm...beer. Jeff, seeing me come down the
hill, took off to his home, I got back onto Buckhorn to my
truck.
Imagine my surprise, when, I went to put the key into the
drivers' side door, to find it not just locked (it was
locked), but not latched! Casing the inside of my truck, I
realized nothing was stolen...nothing was messed with! 10
hours away from my truck in one of the most heavily used 4x4
trailheads, and my beer was not only there....but COLD!
Loaded back up, had a beer, and headedhome.
Jeff called an hour later, and told me he found his gas-cap
gasket at the gas station he filled up 10 hours earlier.
Someone had put it on the island.
My faith in human-kind is restored....for now.

Since when did you need a confidence boost??? You're a good rider, get
over it :)
Way to go dude. Good report. Good riding. Good teasing. You covered it
all. Thanks.
Ditch the double spacing though.

She was probably confused as to how you could stop and not fall
over ;-p
Great report, but I agree on the double-space thing.
I think what I liked best is that this report included some unusual
aspects not present in many typical RRs, and I laughed at loud at the
"...almost punted that poor bastard into the woods" part. Thanks for
the variety, Chris, and good job!

Excellent report! Makes me wanna go ride IMMEDIATELY. OK, come to think of
it: That's quite easy. I'll just simulate a severe migraine attack, take
the French leave through the washroom window and - hey presto! Saves the
wednesday!
Cheers,
Volker

I allow myself to re-post a fixed version.

Cool.
Now go back and get a picture of the boobies.

Nicely done, K-Dub, and so succinctly!
Sorry about the double-spacing, I typed it up in Notepad, then pasted
it due to the intermittent wireless connection in Wyoming. It was
late, and I didn't want to fix it, so tough shit.
I've noticed the increase in RR's lately!
When I get around to it tomorrow, will read each one. Right now I'm
to tired to.....zzzzzzzzzz.....
Now if I could just get someone to do a few of those F&^%$d-up Dr. Seuss
type illustrations I'd make a fortune! Imagining the Hellsickle sprouting
horns and belching fire with a silly-assed hat and striped tail!

Very good. Thanks for sharing.
This winter, when you are snowed in in CO, come on down here and ride
with me in these hills. I'll show you some good trails.

I was happy to put together one for a change!!

Duly noted. Planning stages are commencing. I'd like to make it to
WUDI one of these years.

By all means, make it to a Wudi Ride.
However, you don't have to wait until your schedule will fit the Wudi
Ride; just let me know when you can come down and ride. I'll be here.
(suggestion:Thanksgiving weekend; or any time)
