What size bike is appropriate. I assume somewhere from 80 to 125, but I'm
not sure where. We want something that will last him a few years, but not be
totally intimidating. I ride street bikes (Hayabusa), but know zero about
off-road.
As a matter of fact, I didn't know till today that there were motocross
bikes and off-road bikes. I thought they were the same. I'm thinking an
off-road bike will be better. The MX bikes seem to have a mich taller
suspension, which I assime he will not need.

It depends on how big/tall he is, how agressive he is, what type
riding you tihnk you might do, etc...
Plus, realize that he's going to outgrow pretty much anything you get
him in a year or two.
A lot easier for him to ride than his previous bike - a Kawasaki KX60.
The 60 was a little hot rod with an on-off powerband. My boy outgrew
the bike, but never got to where he rode it on the pipe.
The TTR is a trail bike though. If your friend's kid wants to race,
he will need something more zippy.

I'd recommend the Honda XR80 or XR100 (being a Ride Red guy). All above are
good suggestions though, depending on height - I think the TTRs are a bit
higher than the XRs, and more expensive too. I have a 10 and a 12 y/o on
XR80s. Excellent kid bikes. When your friend takes her son to try on
bikes, make sure he can flat-foot or close to it on whichever bike she gets.
Having to tippy-toe is unsettling when trying to learn how to ride, clutch,
etc.

If you have ANY doubt that the kid will want to go fast, spring for the
bigger suspension, and save a bundle on broken parts.
Good luck!

Hmmm, ask Levy. He's about that size.
