I've maybe got 6 hours total on the KTM this year. Maybe 20-30 on the
trials bike. If it wasn't for the KLR, I'd probably have to consider
myself a former rider.

3 rides this year- 2 short 'training rides' to loosen the joints prior

The only time I've ridden less is when I've had no bike.

I don't ride a dirt bike since early this year. I ride a street bike
every day, but that doesn't soothe the cravings.

It would help your hour total on the KTM if you'd take it out of the back of

Rode the CR250 and new Quad a bit on Sunday. Still need to clean the
powervalve on the neglected KDX. The boys have designs on a Durhamtown trip

the way I see it God gives us 168 hrs/week
I spend ~50-60 hours working
40-50 sleeping the rest is goof off time, chores
& charity work... when the chores creep
in too much on the goof off time, I trade sleep
for coffee and up the goof off ratio...
the biggest gain for personal time is turning
off the TV, I did that around the birth of my

I laugh at the folks who complain about not
having any time yet know all the "shows"..
some how I average a short ride per week
usually just a perimeter check, but still fun...

I rode trail at TrainRobbers on Sunday, a week ago. Brock Creek is
scheduled for this coming Saturday.
The day before yesterday, I helped a six year old (Sabrina) and a
three year old (Trinity) enjoy their CRF 50s; and rode Deb's TTR 125 a
bit in the process.
Keith,
Do yourself a favor and send your KDX suspension to MXTuner (or WER,
or Fredette), to have it freshened and customized for you; hopefully
resulting in a balanced and predictably handling bike for you.
Everything you need is right there in the KDX, but it is all out of
wack.
The first ride after you do it, you will want to kick yourself for
not spending the money sooner. It really is the best money that you
can spend on a bike.
Good Riding!

I'm little over 2K miles YTD, only rode once in July, really cut into
my totals compared to most years.
The last month's entries from my "ride log":
The "Willow" rides are on terrain just west of Sun Valley/Ketchum. The
trails have quite a bit of MTB and hiker traffic, so far 99% of the
encounters with other users we've met have been pleasant.
Date - Location - Miles - Avg Speed - Ride Time - Notes
08/15/10 Willow 66.0 17.0 3.9 W/John & Jon Morgan -
SFk Warm Springs, Warfield, Red Warrior, Mahoney, Cow Cr,
Greenhorn, NFk Deer, Howards, Lick Cr. - met many MTBers,
everyone happy, great weather, great ride.
http://aitonsride.blogspot.com/2010/08/warm-springs-81510.html
08/16/10 Maintenance - fresh filter - 250 since last
08/23/10 Willow 75.2 17.4 4.3 W/John -
Poison, Lick, main fork of Deer Creek (new), Greenhorn,
Mahoney, Lodgepole, Red Warrior, road to Castle Creek,
to Placer, SFk Warm Springs back up. John slid off sloughed
off section on Deer Cr., had to slide down to creek and
ride it out. I dropped bike on little zig-zag bridge on SFk.
Dented rad, aarrgghh. Great, great ride, really liked the
Castle/Placer section, nice switchbacks at beginning of Placer.
Saw 3 MTBers & 3 hikers, all happy.
http://aitonsride.blogspot.com/2010/08/1st-official-ride-of-indian-summer-warm.html
09/04/10 Big Smoky 52.0 17.2 3.0 W/Murray, Kat, Ann, Chad
Paradise, road, up Horse, SFk Ross, connector - they went down Skel,
I took Bear Cr road out.
(Karen and I were camped at Big Smoky, these guys were at Baum, they
met me at Smoky for the ride)
09/06/10 Maintenance - Oil change - 193 since last
09/10/10 Willow 64.0 21.0 3.1 W/Murray & Daryl
mostly same loop as last time here w/John, skipped Placer, up SFk Warm
Springs. Cool in AM, great on trail, Daryl dropped bike in creek,
fully submerged, didn't take long to get it going. Snow on peaks, tiny
bit on upper trail.
09/19/10 Corrals 61.3 18.1 3.4 W/Murray & John
John dropped/drowned bike in new MFk crossing - NFk, Prez, MFk,
Bremner, SFk, Hole - NFk kicked our ass, got stuck in mud rut -
John off trail while we waited at top - great ride, perfect temps but
dry and dusty.
http://aitonsride.blogspot.com/2010/09/lime-creek-91920.html
John's first ride with his new helmet cam, watch the video, it's only
1 minute, pay attention at the 0:25 mark. BTW, to John, it may have
seemed like it took 45 minutes to get the bike up, but in reality it
was only about 15 minutes. Murray and I thought we heard John coming,
but turned out it wasn't a bike, musta been the wind. We were just
about to go back for him when he arrived.

It's worse than that now. I'm currently down to zero riding buddies.
It never even gets *ON* the truck.
I may head down to SC or southern NC on a solo venture this weekend.
Or I may throw a sleeping bag on the KLR and see how far I get before
I'm half way done.
That would be the KTM. ;)

Is the 250R the street legal one? The "dual sport"? It's got a ton
of good things being said about it. Still, not sure I'd want to head
out on a 1000 mile journey on a bike with a 1 liter crankcase...

Well, heading out on a 1000 mile journey is one of the reasons I got it.
A couple of "internet friends" just got back from a 5400 mile journey
both on WRR's. Mexican border to Canadian border and back home, along
with a detour into Idaho. A combination of Continental Divide Route with
the Tour of Idaho thrown in (see motorcyclejazz.com for TID info).
"Why in the heck did you buy a 250 ?? Because they were all out of 175's"

Check ADV rider. There's a 700 page thread (or thereabouts) on this
bike. The guy I picked up Arnett's last two bikes from had a ton of
info on it. Can't put my hands on it right this second.
About the only drawback I could come up with was the lack of oil
capacity. That's what kind of scared me off the KTM450 EXC.
For something to get from trail to trail on though, I think it would
be very hard to beat.
How does it do at 60+ for extended periods?

uhhh...that 700 page thread is now way over 1000 pages, and it's where I
waste WAY too much time these days. want the url???

That's what I did the last 5 days. Bone stock, still grinning. It ate up
a gnarly 4WD-only jeep trail with DOT Trailwing tires and a fairly
clueless pilot aboard (me). I was impressed.
> How does it do at 60+ for extended periods?
Personally, I don't plan on doing much of that anymore. Too small of a
grins/mile ratio. But, the people who've ridden them like that say it
does way better than you'd expect for a 250. It'll cruise at freeway
speed limits. But I'm looking for dirt roads and trails, and back roads
if that can't be done.
Lightweight, unsupported adventure touring. Remember in Long Way 'Round,
when Claudio's GSA died and they bought him a lightweight Chinese 2
stroke street bike and he was riding circles around the 2 stars as they
slipped and bogged and crashed their way through Khazikstan? That's what
I'm talkin' 'bout...

Soon, you too, will call them Death Wings. You have to. It's the
trendy thing to do... Just threw a Shinko 705 on the rear of my KLR,
but it's certainly way too street oriented for what I imagine you're
using yours for. Take a look at the Shinko 244s though, when you get
a chance.

My sights are on country roads and gravel roads. I'm in complete envy
of anyone that rides a KLR on what we'd consider trails. It's a pig
in that regard.

Yeah, never quite understood that meme. They're just a compromise tire,
not so good for one or the other, but an OK compromise. Pulled me
through rocks, sand dirt and asphalt just fine. Don't think they'd be
much help in mud though. My plan is to wear them out quickly.

Will do. I'm currently thinking Pirelli MT43, or D606 for a knobby, or
another trials tire that escapes me at the moment.

There are several hundred miles of those in the Chattahoochee NF right here

For that ilk of tire, the Shinko 705 or the Kenda K761 seem to be far
cheaper and more highly regarded. I wouldn't get in anything
resembling the mud we see around here on any of them though.

I've got a 606 on the front of mine now that I'm probably going to
have to replace before going long distance on. Looked closely at it
this weekend and *all* the knobs are starting to crack at the base.
The Pirellis that I've looked at were pretty spendy.

That they are, but life, circumstances and the housing market conspire to
keep adding digits to that number which is not necessarily a bad thing. :-)

Keep me posted. The calendar is a work in progress.
Uh-oh... Pretty soon, you're going to need a full time mechanic. One
already based in NC would be a wise choice. One who may have already
fondled your GasGeese.
Just sayin'.

It seems the realtor "mafia" does not want me living in NC. I have
now attempted to make two cash offers on houses and working on the
third. Each time, different realtors, they screw around with me,
won't return calls, and eventually say it's too much work to sell a
house without me present. So, don't believe the hype about the
housing market. Last house I purchased from here took six days. Now,
in this so-called buyers market with houses flooding the market... I
can't give my money away.
To make matters worse, my brother calls to tell me that two of my
favorite riding places have been closed down in that area. I'm
seriously considering never coming back.
People should be checking the pulse of our nation. It's going down

Holy Cow Barfut, its mai fault. I sold my motorcicle.
But, if you don't come back, maybe you could settle in a place that could
become
a dirt bike destination resort? I have old Vietnam buddies that live
"off-site"

Moldova, where ever the eff that is. And one of the Philippine islands.
There are toilet times ahead for California; New Hampshire and all those

What has been shut down? There's a new MX place just over the SC line
off I85 that I've heard of. No idea if there are woods to ride or not
though. You might want to look around the Hickory area. It seems
like about half the top twenty GNCC pros have relocated there.

Last stab is 11/2. No grey area involved.
Beautiful weather here. Paula just took off this morning for a couple
days of the Fall colors tour.

I'm stuck at home, working 10-12 hour days, waiting for my neck to
recover.
The new Kali helmet showed up yesterday. Way lighter than my old
HJC. Still waiting on the Leatt brace. I think a day trip next
weekend will be in order. I've pooled my remaining vacation to spend
an entire week in Utah in mid-October. Counting the days.
MXoN this weekend will help. Sturd gets in tomorrow night. He
treated us to a pair of tickets. I don't follow MX, so the names on
the team don't mean a lot to me. Anyone want to give me the cliff
notes on who's who so I can do more than just watch guys go RDR for a
couple of days?
-Jeff-
Just jumpin' in to note you are gonna' get a Leatt and wanted to say
good move;) I know, it get's old with me. But to answer your questions;)
No, I don't work for them;)
Have fun over the weekend, we are finally back on the track (workable
injury, missed the last month + practice time) and hoping fall and
winter are slow this season... Go Al Gore!!! Gimme' Sunspots!!
Ryan Dungey set some records this year, winning both the indoor SX and
outdoor MX championships in his rookie year. He did almost as well on
the "lites" bikes last year. They are calling him GROAT
2010 AMA Motocross 450 Class Champion (Rookie Season)
2010 AMA Supercross 450 Class Champion (Rookie Season)
2009 AMA Supercross Lites West Champion
2009 AMA 250 Class Motocross Champion
2009 Motocross of Nations MX1/Open class first-place finish
Trey Canard is pure America and won the lites outdoors. Somebody asked
him about his confidence and he answered something like "It's not
about confidence. It's about self-worth". I have that one on my
refrigerator.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-IGhs4-WRc
I should know more about Andrew Short. Some folks think Bubba should
have gotten his spot, but Bubba is SX only now, coming back from
injury, and sucked at Unadilla. Short is known to be consistent and
the race is on his "home track".

It's a fine group of upstanding representatives who are easy to like,
and I trust they will kick some ass.
And nearby on the refrigerator, words from the GOAT (paraphrasing,
second hand from the Pala commentary):
"You don't win the championship on your good days. You win it on your
bad days by minimizing the damage".
Words to live by.
Those are my current heroes.
Oh, sorry. Wrong thread. LOL
Both of those quotes seem pretty damned profound to me.
It takes a strong man to be a motocross champion.

Cool, a trip up to Mt. Diablo, Morgan Territory Rd., and Mines Rd. to

I had a good time and I home with a bird on my shoulder and a beer in
my hand (when I'm not typing). I took it really easy today and still
was thouroughly able to break the speed limit . I managed to drift it
throgh a couple patches of gravel. Unlike other many others on the
road, I use my rear brake, ALOT. I trail brake keeping the chain
tensioned so when I get back on the gas, there is no chain snatch. I
learned that on the trials bike and it carries over well to the road.

I got the Kali Aatma helmet. Much lighter than most, but $300 less /
8 oz more than their carbon fiber helmet.

I was impressed how light your's is . Where did you buy it? Their
site doesn't list a dealer anywhere near me. And the online guys
I just checked don't carry them.
Go fast. Take chances.

Check out Airoh [1]. Anja's Stelt weighs a mere 950 grams which equals
~2lbs. Mine is a little heavier since it's XL and not M.

These folks seem to have them in stock. I asked for weights and fit.
Here is what he got back to me with:
Avatar - 850 grams = 1.87 pounds
Durgana - 1150 grams = 2.54 pound
Mantra - 1450 grams = 3.20 pounds
They didn't differentiate between the AATMA and the Avatar. I will
call him again and find out. (The web site is listed in the copy.)

My neck is still bothering me from the "sleeping accident" I suffered
while waiting in the parking lot of the casino on the way back from
Brushy Mtn in July. A lightweight helmet is looking more "cost
effective" for my riding pleasure.

Thanks Jim!
I called Jrock, the salesman from www.ridesfo.com (who is the
internet seller who's auctions I linked above) who handles the
internet auctions. Within 20 minutes he had sent me an email with the
answer to my questions.
1. The Avatar is rated as a DownHill MB helmet only, not rated for MX
like the other three models I have listed in this thread. (I guess
that is why it is so light weight.)
2. AATMA helmet is 1350 grams (2.98#). (Can you confirm this, Jeff?)
If this is so, then the 2,54# Durgana is looking like my next
helmet.
OMT, in an earlier email to Jrock, I had asked him about the fit of
the helmets. This is his quoted report back from Kali Protectives:
"This is what we got a reply from Kali:
Our Mantra fits true to size comparatively to Moto helmets, our Aatma
is about one size larger to Moto Helmets.
The Mantra and Aatma are pretty true to the size chart and to these
other brands fits."
<end quote>
Jeff,
Since you already have your helmet, what can you tell me about the
sizing and fit (compared to other brands you have worn)?
Thanks again,
Jim
Good Riding!
