Just found a little corrosion on my magneto rotor. I'll probably have to
replace it, but I figure I'll give this a shot in the mean time. What do I
use to clean it up?(i.e. what solution, do I use steel wool or ultra fine
sandpaper). Should I do anything with the stator? Thanks

Why would you have to replace it?

Use some fine sandpaper. Spray a little WD 40 on everything and it
should be fine.

Worked like a charm. Started second kick. Just saved myself 400 bones and now
I can go riding tomorrow. Thanks Tuner

So you could send me $50 and still be ahead $350. Nice huh?

Guess so. He had the same bike and they had some kind of recall. He might
have point with the carb though, he says I should swap the bing for a
keinin(sp?), but it works o.k. for now.

Can I give you an IOU?

Mike
(I know you hate KTMs, but it's a 500 from sTeVe?, and it rips!)

P.S. My radiator cap is leaking, as evidenced by the fluid that comes out of
the overflow as soon as I start it, any way to avoid buying a new cap? Maybe
a little silicone round the edge? I know it's not likely, but it's worth a
try isn't it? . . . . Guess not. Should I get one of those "high pressure
caps"?

Hey.. I just offered my experiences with this bike. KTM came out with a
replacement ignition free of charge for this bike in 85 after many problems
with the ignition. Mark... I never play your part.... I can't keep up the
pace. Besides... as always... you DA MAN!

Don't give Tuner anything... He already makes enough money...
And I got the photographic evidence to prove it.

Might want to check that your head gasket isn't leaking too.

Wouldn't the bike run poorly if this was the case? How about trying Tuner's
trick: Cut out a piece of inner tube and stuff it in there? Anyone tried it
with success? Thanks

Maybe not. It may not be leaking bad enough to give other symptoms.
Those other symptoms could be just around the corner if it is leaking.

First I think I would just get a new cap. This is something which
could cause a bad day if not repaired correctly.

What are the other symptoms that I should be looking for? Is there any way to
detect a leak in the head gasket without taking the engine apart? Thanks.

The one way I would check is just like Uwe suggested. Put your palm
over the radiator neck (with the engine running) and see if it is
creating pressure.

Uh oh . . . it is. What now? Is this going to be too complicated for me to
figure out with a service manual, or can any old spode do it?

Don't worry Steve, you're not going to get the bike back.

I just spoke with a guy at European Dirt (KTM Dealer). He says that on this
particular engine, the head gasket only goes around the outside of the head,
and that a leak could be due to a crack in the head or some kind of break in
the seal. He said the only way to avoid replacing the head or having it
machined would be to use lapping compound, but he said he hasn't had much luck
with it. Has anyone tried this?

Removing the head sin't too bad. Be sure to check the head surface for
any distortion and ditto for the top of the cylinder. They need to be
virtually flat.

I did a top end on a CR 500 and had a sleeve put in it. They decked
the top of the cylinder when they installed the sleeve. The head was
so warped, it wouldn't seal against the top of the cylinder.
