When I went to check on the availability of a complete gasket kit my
dealer said that the '88 kit wasn't available - the '85-87 and 89-99
kits are, but not the '88s. Is there something about the 1988 model
that vastly differs from all the others? The 88 has a power valve,
just like the new ones, and also like the '86-87 models. What gives?
Also how reliable are KX500 ignitions?
The seller said that the KX500 flywheel is the exact same as the KX60.
I looked at the flywheel and saw where this might be true - the thing
was tiny!
If I recall, the '88 KX line had the best suspention components of
that year, in spite of not having USD forks. Did the 500 come with
wimpy springs?
Thanks for your input!

Dude! I just checked my 98 dennis kirk catalog for the vesrah complete
gasket kit-bad news-they go from 86-87, then 89-97. Man is that
funky.....I'd say its time to check with someone who rebuilds lots of
opens to find out what the gasket trick is for the 88......

can't help ya with the rest good luck-I'll give ya ten bucks for them
if you want to get rid of them......

Go to www.vesrah.com they list two different gasket part numbers for the 88
KX500
who knows what the difference is. One is for a 88-90 D1/E1/E2 (VL4034), the
other was for the 88 only D1(VE4008)

What a great deal!! Would you be interested in selling a part or two,
like a kickstarter?

Not sure, that is strange though!

Mine has been fine, it's 5 1/2 years old.. Mind you it doesn't have
high hours.

Not sure, but my 94 came with really wimpy springs, .39's. I'm having
.44s put in tomorrow morning with my Race Tech revalve.
Good luck with your new toy! I wish I could find something like that,
for parts.

94 KX500
I have a 89 model and had a 94 model. Those motors were identical. I don't
know shit about the 88, but will inquire of my dealer and see what she says.
The 89 had completely different forks than the 88..I know that.. Basically
the 89 forks were what Kawasaki used in the nationals in 88 and did not go
with the USD forks like Honda, etc.. because the 89 USD Kawasaki forks were
not as good as the standard Kawasaki 89 forks. European KX got the USD
forks, but I have never felt that the standard forks were anything but damn
good. Only thing I could thing about the motor was maybe a change in water
coolant routing thru the cylinder and/or the KIPS valve arrangement resulting
in a different size of base gasket and some openings and such. Also the
clutch side gasket? Man, you got me.
