I think you are just spoiled :-) after spending my days working on
crappily designed racks and cabinets, and my nights working on 40 year
old plumbing and wiring (my house), the GasGas is a pure delight of
efficiency and simplicity. I pulled the swingarm and linkage apart
just because i wanted something fun and easy to do for a change...

ps, I've finished up all the street legal lighting and stuff (it looks
pretty cool, too), and will be heading to the DMV in the next week or
so. Wish me luck :-)
If he did that I would think something was way wrong :). Mike do you
have a dealer close by? Are parts gonna be in stock and whats the price
like on the parts compared to the jap bikes?? Just curious, I hear those
G.G's really go good.

I took those things into consideration when I purchased the bike. I do not have
a dealer close by. This isn't that big of a problem. Brakes are Nissan and
pads are easy to come by. Bearings are available from bearing supply houses.
The forks are the same 43mm WP units that KTM uses. The shock is Ohlins. The
plastic (except radiator shroudsand tank) is the same as the 1995 KX and Acerbis
black plastic looks good on it. I'm not sure about top-end, clutch and other
non-generic parts prices, but I know Jim Cook will give me good pricing based on
his cost. I plan on picking up key spares in the next few months.
The bike runs great! I never needed or wanted more power in Idaho. I had
problems with the engine loading up coming down high elevation hills in Idaho
and fouling plugs. Phil told me that I might be able to solder and old pilot
jet shut to use when I ride high altitude. It was a trick used on some of the
old ATK's. We'll see how it behaves at 6000 ft. and below with the size 35
pilot jet Jim brought to me. At least the plug is easy to change on it!

Rex, I had separate conversations at Spodefest with Wes Grass and Jim Cook
about Gas Gas parts availability. I 'm not in the market for a new bike but
was curious about the parts subject. Pricing I know nothing about. The
availability I was assured is the same as any, overnight delivery if you need
it that fast and are willing
to pay the extra few bucks shipping. Otherwise normal 3-4 days receipt.
Jim mentioned he inventories all normal parts for the Bikes he sales.
Gas Gas national warehouse is in Arkansas.
I met Jim at the Colorado Spodefest, great guy, but I need to be able to
run across town at the farthest to get parts so I can race or ride the next
day. No Gas Gas dealer I know of here in Denver, yet, hopefully soon. The
bikes look great.

The only thing that has broke on my bike is a couple rear spokes when they
got loose, a couple rubber bungie straps that hold the CDI in the airbox, the
same type strap for the kickstand, and a kickstand spring. Everything else
has been regular maintenance. Never had the NEED for a local shop.

Uwe you ripped on that 200 last year at spodefest which brings up my
question. Do you ever take your 250 out or is like a back up bike?
Rex,
Euro Sport International in Broomfield is the closest Gas Gas dealer in the
Denver area (303-465-2848). They're a small shop dealing mostly used bikes. Gas
Gas is the only brand they sell 'new'. They're pretty close to the Broomfield
exit off US 36 (Boulder Turnpike). I'm not sure how many parts they stock, but
they seem like nice people.

That was fun raging along that New England section with you.
>Do you ever take your 250 out or is like a back up bike?
I took it out a couple times this spring to do CC marking while I put a
new topend and other parts on the GG.
It's pretty much a backup bike. The last time out it was blubbering
above mid-rpm. I'm thinking powervalve might be gummed up or silencer.
But it makes enough power I get around fine lugging it. It's Nolleen
ported and been bored out over the years to about a 290.
Last ride I noticed that the lower engine mount bolt was missing. I
know I put it on when I rebuilt the bike in 97. I don't see how it
could have fallen out without me noticing it. Someone told me that
they've seen old bolts snap with both ends flying out the sides. I
guess it's possible.
It could probably use a new clutch too.
I thought about selling it but it's nice having a second bike.
You haven't begun to see different... Come by next time I tear the
Cannondale down and THEN tell me how different the GasGas is ;-)

Rex, I'm not promoting one bike over another. My question is
what bike parts can you get at a Dealer from his on hand inventory?
I'm referring to the parts manufactured by Kawasaki, Yamaha, Gas Gas
etc....In my corner of the world the Dealers always order out the parts.
Are there Dealers in Denver that actually inventory parts made by the
manufacturers?
Can you actually walk into a Dealership and purchase from their on hand
inventory, a new Sub-frame or a Kicker Starter for a late model MXer.
What about all the internal engine and transmission parts, do the Denver
dealers stock these items also?

You know, that's the attitude I had in the past. It only makes sense. Your way
more likely to come across a Yamaha dealership than a GasGas dealership.
However, I have yet to come across a local dealership anywhere I live that has
any major parts in stock. I mean stuff like cylinders, hubs and the like. So
all I need is a top end kit and a clutch on the shelf and I'll be covered as
well as I am with the YZ.

Yeah no kidding.... My local shop actually has more parts in stock for
the Cannondale then they typically do for my WR400,XR80,PW50,KX100, or
XV750. Almost everything has been special order for the Jap bikes.
So far, everything I've needed for the Cannondale has been on the
shelf. (ie. air filters(3), fuel filter(1), sprockets front and rear,
plugs(all they had), clutch plates and springs, gaskets for every
cover, and I know they have complete plastic in black if I want it!)

Scot, Fus up to us Spodes. How many times have you dropped the engine on
your CannonBall?

That's been my experience. If I go to the local dealer it'll take a
week for them to order it and I gotta pay out the yingyang. I can have
Jim overnight me stuff and end up paying less including the cost of
shipping.
And I have pictures somewhere showing SMS stocking the cylinders and
other parts that most dealers wouldn't carry.

Actually the dealer I use here in Denver usually has in stock what I
need. The dealership is Vickery Motorsports. There are times I need to
order things but I have had good luck with them on things being in stock.
Brake levers, brake pedals, pipes in stock, spark arrestors, even a cylinder
head for my 250 a few months back. I can't remember everything but they
have been good. The shop is actually good sized and they are not all show
like another major dealership here in town.
One story of note. I blew my lower end in a race a few months back.
Had it to them by noon on Monday, I wasnt gonna do a lower end. They asked
if I was gonna race the following weekend and I told them I wanted to so
they said they would get on it right away. By 5 that afternoon they called
and said it was ready. They had all the parts in stock and got on it right
away. To me thats hard to beat service.

If that is your standard of service, i suggest don't buy any brand
that the dealer doesn't sell, because that is not how 99% of the shops
operate. You are very lucky to have them near you, if i had a shop
1/2 that good around, i may have had second thoughts about buying a
bike with no local dealer. Since my local dealers suck anyway, i
didn't worry about it...
I've been debating bying one of these things.I live out in Modesto,Ca and
there is a dealership here called Modesto Buell that also sells GasGas.I
didn't know that till the other day when I drove past and saw a new 200,
250,and 300 sitting out in front.I like the way these things ride. Rode a
300ec a couple weeks ago. The power is just in a word,SWEET. I feel I can go
fast on it through the tight stuff too. A couple things I really like about
the bike is the standard equipment.FMF PIPE, SILENCER,WP SUSPENSION,NISSIN
BRAKES,ALUMINUM BARS,EXCEL RIMS AND MICHILIN TIRES.All stock. The thing that
worries me is parts replacement. The dealer says that the clutch plates,
piston, wheel bearings, and sprockets are right off of a cr 250. Is this true?
If so thats pretty awsome cosidering the price of euro part replacement. They
are asking right around $5,900 for a 300xc. This seems like a fairly decent
price considering that a guy can order a new bike w/the suspension valved and
sprung just the way he wants it. Is this a good price? Thanks, jbone

Jim tried using CR plates but found them to bit a bit thicker and didnt' work.
They did fit. Unless they changed the hubs, they are Husky clones. Plastic
except for radiator shrouds is KX.

No problems with parts availability.

Yeah, what he said. It's so easy to pick up the phone and call Jim or
Town and Country and have the stuff on your doorstep in a
couple-a-three days. I've gotten *anything* I've needed in short

better and I use Town and Country for suspension work (it rulez) and
